The umpire rules the pitch a ball since the batter didn t swing at the pitch. Is the umpire correct? (Answer on last page)

6 Hitting and Bats Well, boys, it s a round ball and a round bat and you got to hit the ball square. - Joe Schultz. Baseball is the only field of endeavor where a man can succeed three times out of ten and be considered a good performer - Ted Williams Hitting the Ball Square It has been said that one of the hardest things to do in sports is to hit a pitched baseball. A 100 MPH fastball thrown from 60 6 takes 0.9 seconds to reach home plate. It takes 0.2 seconds for the batter to see the ball, think, and start to swing. It takes the batter 0.15 seconds to swing the bat. That leaves about a half second for margin of error. A swing that is off by seconds too fast or too slow will go foul. But, you say, in Little League, they don t throw at 100 MPH. It is not that much better. In little league, it takes 1.1 seconds for a 60 MPH ball to travel 46 feet. A 50 MPH fastball is 1.35 seconds. It is not that much better. When you swing at that fastball or curve, you need to be hit a 3 ball with a 2 ¼ bat within ¼ of dead center of the ball to get the most force into the ball. If you hit too far under the ball, it pops up. If you hit over the ball, it becomes a weak ground ball. So, if you hit the ball, congratulate yourself. It s hard! Cont. on Page #7

7 Composite Bats BBCO Hitting and Bats continued... The Aluminum Trampoline and How to Tame Bats The Aluminum bat has a trampoline effect on the baseball. Because the bat is aluminum on the outside and hollow inside, the aluminum acts like a spring or a trampoline. First the metal contracts and then it springs out. Most bats have a 1.15 batter performance factor. This means that the aluminum bat will hit the ball 1.15x as hard as a wooden bat. In 1974, aluminum bats were introduced to college baseball. This was done to save money, because aluminum doesn t break. That started a major change in college baseball. Runs scored per game climbed over the next several years from 5 to 7. To slow this down, in 1986, college introduced drop weight standards. A 34 inch bat had to weight at least 29 oz (drop 5: 34-5=29). That worked, but runs started to climb again. A new standard was introduced that worked for awhile. But then, composite bats were introduced. If the batter is hit by a pitch while attempting to avoid it, he is awarded first base. If the umpire doesn t feel the batter made an attempt to avoid the pitch a ball call would be correct as well as a Dead ball since the ball struck the batter. No base would be awarded.
