The event will take place at the Las Vegas Convention Center and will mark the 26th time in the 30-year history of the event that the Sun Devils have competed. The Sun Devils are coming back from a 2-2 showing at the Journeyman/Asics Northeast Duals this past weekend in which the team went 2-2 with an upset of #20 Penn in the process. Junior heavyweight Levi Cooper upset the top-ranked returning NCAA Champion in Zach Rey of Lehigh in the competition as well. This comes despite finishing sixth at the NCAA Championships last year, though the loss of national champions Anthony Robles and Bubba Jenkins and the very young team the Sun Devils will be fielding are likely to blame for their omittance. The team did not receive any votes in the most recent NWCA/USA Today Coaches Poll. STRENGTH OF SCHEDULE Eight opponents on ASU s schedule can be found within the NWCA/USA Today Coaches Poll that was released earlier this week, including No. 2 Oklahoma State, who the Sun Devils are set to face in Stillwater on Jan. 20. Other top 25 teams on this year s slate include No. 11 Oklahoma, No. 18 Oregon State, and No. 21 Nebraska. Arizona State faced three teams currently ranked at the Northeast Duals, upsetting #22 Penn, 21-20, while falling to #10 Lehigh and #25 Binghamtom ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY WRESTLING 1

2 Coach Charles / Notes 2 HEAD COACH SHAWN CHARLES On May 8, 2009, the Sun Devil wrestling program brought back one of its own by hiring Shawn Charles to lead the program that he competed for from An Arizona native and one of the more successful Sun Devils in program history, Charles is just the sixth head coach in the program s 47-year history. Charles brings a wealth of knowledge to the program following coaching stints as a head coach (Fresno State, & Phoenix College, ) and as an assistant coach (Missouri, Brown, Nebraska, Central Michigan and Iowa State). During his time on the sidelines, he has worked with 42 individuals that have earned NCAA All-America accolades with five competitors securing individual national titles. Charles was also named the Pac-10 Coach of the year last season after leading the team to a sixth-place finish at the NCAA Championships. As a student-athlete at ASU, Charles earned All- America honors four times in his career and was a two-time national finalist at 126 pounds. Charles also was a two-time individual Pac-10 Champion and helped his team to three Pac-10 Championships (1990, 1991, 1993) and three Top 6 finishes at the NCAA Championships. In 1993, he graduated from ASU with a B.S. in Computer Information Systems to cap a collegiate career that saw him win 103 career matches and compete in the NWCA East-West All- Star Classic twice. As an international competitor, Charles claimed 14 titles, including victories in tournaments in Iran, Manitoba, Slovakia, Bulgaria and Turkey while also winning the U.S. Open, the NYAC International and the Pan-American Championships. Along with several U.S. national titles, Charles twice placed second at the World Team Trials and was an alternate on the 1996 U.S. Olympic team. QUICK FACTS ON CHARLES ASU s first 4x NCAA All-American in wrestling (90-93) 2x Pac-10 Champion (126 pounds) Graduated from ASU in 1993 (BS, Computer Info. Sys.) The victory rocketed Cooper from the mid-teens in post rankings to the top-10 across the board, peaking at No. 4 bu The Open Mat. Amateur Wrestling News has him ranked No. 5 while DICollegeWrestling.net placed him in sixth in this weeks rankings. No other Sun Devils find themselves ranked by any ranking service. LAS VEGAS INVITE HISTORY The 2011 Las Vegas Invitational will be the 30th edition of the tournament with ASU making its 26th all-time appearance in the event, which includes every tournament held since the 1985 event. In that time, the Sun Devils have won the event three times, including the 1987, 1989 and 1992 tournaments, while finishing as the runner-up twice (1988, 1997). Overall, Arizona State has placed among the Top 5 16 times and among the Top 10 on 21 different occasions. The Sun Devils were 12th at the event last year as Anthony Robles captured the title at pounds. IN THE FIELD: HIGHLY RANKED TEAMS Thirty-four teams are scheduled to compete in the 30th Cliff Keen/Las Vegas Invitational this weekend. That field includes the third-ranked NCAA Division I squad in Cornell. Also in the field will be No. 6 Ohio State, No. 8 Pittsburgh, No. 15 Wyoming, No. 18 Oregon State and No. 21 Nebraska A LOOK BACK: Northeast Duals The Arizona State University wrestling team had its hands full last Saturday, competing in four separate duals at the Journeyman/Asics Northeast Duals in Troy, N.Y. The Sun Devils finished two on the day, defeating Army and upsetting No. 20 Penn while falling to No. 10 Lehigh and Binghamton at the McDonough Sports Complex at Hudson Valley Community College. Levi Cooper was the story of the day, going 4-0 in his matches and upsetting the top-ranked and returning NCAA heavyweight champion Zach Rey of Lehigh, 5-1. Needing a pin to have any hope for a tie against Penn, Cooper managed to do so with only 45 second left in the match. His opponent then threw his headgear, earning a munsportsmanlike conduct penalty and costing his team a point, giving ASU the victory, Redshirt freshman Nathan Hoffer also went 4-0 in the competition. HANGING WITH MR. COOPER After Levi Cooper s surprise falter in his second match of the season against Eastern Michigan s Wes Schroeder, the redshirt junior has ripped off 10 consecutive victories in a streak that includes an upset of top-ranked returning champion Zach Rey of Lehigh at the Northeast Duals. Two of those wins have come by fall and two more my major decision and Cooper is all of a sudden looking like he will be a force to be reckoned with at the national level moving forward. DON T MESS WITH THE HOFF Another Sun Devil on a hot streak is redshirt freshman Nathan Hoffer. After a fourth-place finish at the Eastern Michigan Open to start the season, Hoffer has reeled off victories in all six dual competitions on the season and is the only undefeated dual competitor outside of Cooper. Hoffer went 4-0 at the Northeast Duals and three of his victories so far this season have come by pin. LIFTING THE LID Arizona State is now all-time in its first dual of the season and has won six in a row after a victory against Embry-Riddle, 31-10, two weekends ago. The last time ASU lost its opener came on November 27, 2004, when host Iowa won, The dual against Grand Canyon and Embry-Riddle marked the sixth time ASU has opened the dual season against a fellow Arizona school with the Sun Devils easily ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY WRESTLING

ASU is now when facing an in-state opponent in a season-opening dual. COPPER STATE COMPETITIONS The Sun Devils have been impressive in their duals with other schools from the state of Arizona, holding an all-time record of What is more impressive is the fact the Sun Devils have won 46 in a row against Arizona schools with its last loss coming in an loss at home to Arizona on February 13, 3. FINDING HIS HOME Levi Cooper s early career was not an easy one. The redshirt junior out of Hubbard, Ore., started as a freshman at Portland State in 2008, compiling an record before the program was discontinued at the conclusion of the year. Cooper would go on to compete at CSU Bakersfield the following year but found himself transferring to Arizona State after redshirting his year with the Roadrunners. As a sophomore last year, Cooper burst onto the scene to the tune of an eighth-place All-America finish at last year NCAA Championships and is the Sun Devils lone returning All-American and one of just nine upperclassmen on the roster as he gets set to compete in a second year for a program for the first time in his career. YOUNG GUNS A look at ASU s probably starters heading into the season gives one every indication they need as to why the Sun Devils aren t receiving much love in the preseason rankings. Up to nine student-athletes could make their debuts as a Division I competitor this year. With only 10 weight classes, that tells you all you need to know about this years team. Among those expected to start this year are eight redshirt freshman: Dalton Miller (), Shane McGough (), Nathan Hoffer (), Joel Smith (), Hans Rasmusson (), Derek Felton (), Bobby Bowman () and Tommy Burriel () will all likely see their first action in the coming weeks. Victor De Jesus is a junior college transfer who could also make an impact at pounds DON T COUNT THEM OUT Just because there is tons of youth on the roster doesn t mean there is any shortage of talent. The redshirt freshmen all had a year to learn and grow under the likes of the now-departed Anthony Robles and Bubba Jenkins and saw just what it takes to be a top-10 caliber team. Six of the eight redshirt freshmen won at least one state title while in high school and the two that didn t (Tommy Burriel and Hans Rasmusson) were both runners-up at their respective state championships. The redshirt freshman have a combined record of on the season, led by Nathan Hoffer s 10-2 record. NEW FACES Mention has already been made of the eight redshirt freshman who could be starters this year, but that s just the start oh how young the Sun Devil roster is this year. Of 31 student-athletes, just nine are upperclassmen and only four are seniors. There are a total of 11 redshirt freshmen on the team and 10 true freshmen, making up two-thirds of the ASU roster. The brand news faces on this year s team include: Kory DeBerry (Tucson, Ariz.), Jake Gentzler (Andover, Kan.), Jacob Graham (Phoenix, Ariz.), Rush Hall (Hoover, Ala.), Mat Malnoske (Anchorage, Alaska), Preston McCalmon (Lafeyette, Ga.), Lucio Murillo (Tucson, Ariz.), Kevin Radford (Fayetteville, N.C.), Alex Schmersahl (Centralia, Mo.) and Blake Stauffer (Neosho, Mo.). SENIOR SEASONS Four individuals on the roster are entering their final seasons in the Maroon and Gold. The list includes 2011 NCAA participants Eric Starks and Jake Meredith (2011 Pac-10 Champion) as well as Arizona-native Kyle DeBerry. David Prado, who should find a role as a starter at pounds this year is also set to graduate. ALL IN THE FAMILY In the history of the program, 29 different families have supplied the Sun Devils with multiple wrestlers, including a pair of brothers this year and a second-generation Sun Devil. Brothers Kyle and Kory DeBerry are the 27th set of brothers to be members of the Arizona State program with Kory joining his senior brother after winning four consecutive state titles at Sunnyside High School in Tucson, a feat Kyle accomplished at the same school just five years earlier. COACHING ADDITIONS The season will see the addition of two additional coaches with Travis Pascoe joining the staff as an assistant coach, replacing Ben Askren, while recently-graduated national champion Anthony Robles will be a part of the team in a volunteer coach role while he continues his post-collegiate career of motivational speaking. Pascoe had served as a volunteer coach at Oregon State for the past five seasons and will bring a wealth of knowledge to the team s heavyweights, having been an All-American and hour-time NCAA qualifier during his collegiate years at Nebraska. ALUMNI UPDATE UFC 139 was a success for former Sun Devils with Dan Hendo Henderson winning the main event with a unanimous decision over Mauricio Shogun Rua while Ryan Bader earned a solid victory in the undercard against Jason Brilz. Cain Velasquez was unable to defend his UFC heavyweight title against up-andcoming Junior Do Santos, falling by TKO in the first round. Aaron A-Train Simpson won his bout against Eric Schafer in UFC 136 just under a month ago while Clifford Starks won his UFC debut on Oct. 29 against Dustin Jacoby. Both wins were by unanimous decision ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY WRESTLING
