The Sun Devils enter the weekend having dropped seven straight and will be looking to get back on track to improve upon their 5-9 record (1-1 Pac-12). The Cal Poly dual is set to get underway at 7 p.m. PT while the dual against Bakersfield will get underway at 2 p.m. on Sunday. OPENING WHISTLE ASU remains unranked on the season Levi Cooper leads the team with 20 victories on the season and just four dual losses Nathan Hoffer is the first member of the team to reach double digit is dual wins, earnng his 10th against Oklahoma State Levi Cooper upset the top-ranked returning NCAA Champion in Zach Rey of Lehigh at the Northeast Duals Head Coach Shawn Charles is in his third season as head coach Redshirt freshman Shane McGough has logged nine of his 14 victories this year with bonus points (6 falls, 3 majors) Arizona State is a combined against Oklahoma State and Oklahoma The Sun Devils return one All-American this season in heavyweight Levi Cooper Cooper (HWT) is the only Sun Devil ranked by all of the major ranking services Sixteen Sun Devils have experienced their first collegiate action this season, representing the mass majority of competitors thus far IN THE RANKINGS - TEAM The Sun Devils entered the season unranked for the first time since the season. This comes despite finishing sixth at the NCAA Championships last year, though the loss of national champions Anthony Robles and Bubba Jenkins and the very young team the Sun Devils will be fielding are likely to blame for their omittance. The team did not receive any votes in the most recent NWCA/USA Today Coaches Poll. STRENGTH OF SCHEDULE Seven opponents on ASU s schedule can be found within the NWCA/ USA Today Coaches Poll that was released earlier this week, with the Sun Devils losing all seven. The team fell to #1 Oklahoma State and #10 Okalhoma last weekend and lost to #14 Lehigh, #19 Binghamtom, #7 Nebraska and #17 Oregon State and #25 Old Dominion earlier this season, though they did beat Penn who, ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY WRESTLING 1

2 2 HEAD COACH SHAWN CHARLES On May 8, 2009, the Sun Devil wrestling program brought back one of its own by hiring Shawn Charles to lead the program that he competed for from An Arizona native and one of the more successful Sun Devils in program history, Charles is just the sixth head coach in the program s 47-year history. Charles brings a wealth of knowledge to the program following coaching stints as a head coach (Fresno State, & Phoenix College, ) and as an assistant coach (Missouri, Brown, Nebraska, Central Michigan and Iowa State). During his time on the sidelines, he has worked with 42 individuals that have earned NCAA All-America accolades with five competitors securing individual national titles. Charles was also named the Pac-10 Coach of the year last season after leading the team to a sixth-place finish at the NCAA Championships. As a student-athlete at ASU, Charles earned All- America honors four times in his career and was a two-time national finalist at 126 pounds. Charles also was a two-time individual Pac-10 Champion and helped his team to three Pac-10 Championships (1990, 1991, 1993) and three Top 6 finishes at the NCAA Championships. In 1993, he graduated from ASU with a B.S. in Computer Information Systems to cap a collegiate career that saw him win 103 career matches and compete in the NWCA East-West All- Star Classic twice. As an international competitor, Charles claimed 14 titles, including victories in tournaments in Iran, Manitoba, Slovakia, Bulgaria and Turkey while also winning the U.S. Open, the NYAC International and the Pan-American Championships. Along with several U.S. national titles, Charles twice placed second at the World Team Trials and was an alternate on the 1996 U.S. Olympic team. QUICK FACTS ON CHARLES ASU s first 4x NCAA All-American in wrestling (90-93) 2x Pac-10 Champion (126 pounds) Graduated from ASU in 1993 (BS, Computer Info. Sys.) Coach Charles / Notes IN THE RANKINGS - INDIVIDUAL Returning All-American Levi Cooper is the only Sun Devil consistently ranked by all of the major ranking services, and did himself a huge favor in upsetting former No. 1 Zach Rey at the Northeast Duals. The victory rocketed Cooper from the mid-teens in most rankings to the top-10 across the board, peaking at No. 4 by The Open Mat. Cooper dropped both duals this past weekend, though one was to No. 3 Alan Gelogaev of Oklahoma State, but he still sits at #9 in the Amateur Wrestling News rankings. SCOUTING THE COMPETITION: Cal Poly The Mustangs will enter the weekend with a 4-5 overall record and are 2-2 in Pac-12 competition. It will be senior night at Mott Gym for Cal Poly and they will see one of their greats take part in his last competition in Mott Gym in Boris Novachkov, a two-time All-American and two-time Pac-12 champion at 141 pounds. Novachkov is ranked second in all major rankings systems entering the weekend. It will also be the last dual for third-ranked Ryan DesRoches at 174 pounds, who enters the weekend with a 21-1 record. ASU is in the all-time series between the two programs but has dropped the past two duals between the two. SCOUTING THE COMPETITION: CSU Bakersfield The Roadrunners are 2-5 entering the weekend and 0-4 in Pac-12 competition. ASU holds the series edge of CSU Bakersfield by a margin, through the Roadrunners have won three of the past four duals. Bakersfield has no studentathletes ranked in the top-20 in this week s Amateur Wrestling News rankings. A LOOK BACK: Oklahoma State/Oklahoma It was a tough weekend for the Sun Devils as they dropped a pair of duals to topranked Oklahoma (L, 33-6) and #11 Oklahoma (L, 33-7) last weekend. The Sun Devils were overwhelmed by the depth of the two powerhouse, which featured a combined 17 wrestlers ranked in the top-20 in the nation compared to just one for the Sun Devils. Kevin Radford was the standout of the weekend as the only Sun Devil to sweep his two duals, including an upset of #20 Erich Schmidtke of Oklahoma to improve to on the season. HANGING WITH MR. COOPER After Levi Cooper s surprise falter in his second match of the season against Eastern Michigan s Wes Schroeder, the redshirt junior ripped off 13 consecutive victories in a streak that included an upset of top-ranked returning champion Zach Rey of Lehigh at the Northeast Duals. The streak came to an end in Las Vegas but Cooper has still established himself as one of the top heavyweights in the nation and will look to return to his All-America status attained last year. Cooper earned his 50th career victory in a decision over #18 Kyle Frey in Las Vegas. Cooper has also placed in all three tournaments the team has competed in this season after his fourth-place run in Reno. TOUGH MCGOUGH Shane McGough has began to rise as the most exciting of ASU s young wrestlers this season, winning eight of his 12 victories this season with bonus points. Head coach Shawn Charles has praised the redshirt freshman as being that fire that gets people up and cheering on the bench and has gotten the crowd into the home matches this season. McGough has also logged victories over three of his five ranked opponents that he has faced this season, including a beastly pin over #17 Garrett Drucker of Oregon State. DON T MESS WITH THE HOFF Another Sun Devil on a hot streak is redshirt freshman Nathan Hoffer. After a fourth-place finish at the Eastern Michigan Open to start the season, Hoffer reeled ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY WRESTLING

The youngster had an up-and-down Decmeber and January but looks to be getting back on pace in winning three of his last four duals, including an upset of #12 Josh Kindig against Oklahoma State. Hoffer became the first member of the team to reach double digits in dual meets, earning his 10th with the victory. PRETTY RAD, DUDE Kevin Radford began making a case for being the top freshman on the team with an earlyseason upset upset of #18 Max Thomusseit before staying competitive with top-ranked Robert Hamlin. His consolation quarterfinal apperance at the Las Vegas Invitational showed his ability to bounce back from an early loss and Radford followed that up by posting a 4-2 record at the Reno Tournament of Champions tht saw him defeat No. 20 Matt Ryan of West Virginia and top-ranked NJCAA competitor Austin Morehead of Clackamas. Radford was the standout of the past weekend as the only Sun Devil to sweep his two duals, including an upset of #20 Erich Schmidtke of Oklahoma to improve to on the season. STARKS ENTERPRISES Eric Starks is one of the rarities on the team in that he brings NCAA Championship experience and is one of few seniors on the team and his return to the mat after a long absence due to injury will look to spark the Sun Devils heading into the conference championships. Starks earned on of just two Sun Devil victories against Oklahoma this past weekend in a major decision of Nolan McBryde. JACOB S LADDER Injuries are part of the game when it comes to wrestling and everyone has to be ready to go in case a teammate goes down. That was the case for true freshman Jacob Graham as he has had to fill for returning NCAA Competitor Eric Starks at 174 pounds for the past couple weeks. Graham, the only true freshman to compete for ASU so far this season, was solid in his collegiate debut, going 2-2 in a run that including the team s fastest pin of the season in 43 seconds against Shawn Seppalla of Western Wyoming in Graham s first collegiate bout. Graham went on to put #5 Nick Heflin on his back in a losing but spirited effort and showed another gutsy effort against Oregon State s Ty Vinson, pinning the Beaver with about 10 seconds left despite trailing the bout by four points at the time. FILLING THE GAP Injuries are a part of wrestling and the key to a good team is the ability for others to step up when a starter goes down. Like Graham, redshirt freshman Kyle McIntosh has been asked LAST TIME ASU... McIntosh scored an exciting come-from-behind victory against Boise State s Steven Hernandez for his first career victory and used his flair for the dramatic for another third period victory against Iowa State s Lucas Swalla the other night. FINDING HIS HOME Levi Cooper s early career was not an easy one. The redshirt junior out of Hubbard, Ore., started as a freshman at Portland State in 2008, compiling an record before the program was discontinued at the conclusion of the year. Cooper would go on to compete at CSU Bakersfield the following year but found himself transferring to Arizona State after redshirting his year with the Roadrunners. As a sophomore last year, Cooper burst onto the scene to the tune of an eighth-place All-America finish at last year NCAA Championships and is the Sun Devils lone returning All-American and one of just nine upperclassmen on the roster as he gets set to compete in a second year for a program for the first time in his career. YOUNG GUNS A look at ASU s probably starters heading into the season gives one every indication they need as to why the Sun Devils didn t receive much love in the preseason rankings. Thus far this year, 14 different student-athletes have made their Division I debuts. Between injuries and just having a young team across the board, many of the wrestlers are getting thrown in the fire and having to prove themselves right off the bat. Several have answered the call, a promising sign, as the team will need the youth to step up heading into the meat of the season. DON T COUNT THEM OUT Just because there is tons of youth on the roster doesn t mean there is any shortage of talent. The redshirt freshmen all had a year to learn and grow under the likes of the now-departed Anthony Robles and Bubba Jenkins and saw just what it takes to be a top-10 caliber team. The freshmen on the team have compiled a record on the year, led by double digit victories from Nathan Hoffer, Shane McGough, Tommy Burriel and Kevin Radford. NEW FACES Mention has already been made of the 16 true or redshirt freshmen that have seen time this year, but that s just the start oh how young the Sun Devil roster is this year. Of 31 student-athletes, just nine are upperclassmen and only four are seniors. There are a total of 11 redshirt freshmen on the team and 10 true freshmen, making up two-thirds of the ASU roster. The brand new faces on this year s team include: Kory DeBerry (Tucson, Ariz.), Jake Gentzler (Andover, Kan.), Jacob Graham (Phoenix, Ariz.), Rush Hall (Hoover, Ala.), Mat Malnoske (Anchorage, Alaska), Preston McCalmon (Lafeyette, Ga.), Lucio Murillo (Tucson, Ariz.), Kevin Radford (Fayetteville, N.C.), Alex Schmersahl (Centralia, Mo.) and Blake Stauffer (Neosho, Mo.). SENIOR SEASONS Four individuals on the roster are entering their final seasons in the Maroon and Gold. The list includes 2011 NCAA participants Eric Starks and Jake Meredith (2011 Pac-10 Champion) as well as Arizona-native Kyle DeBerry. David Prado, who should find a role as a starter at 125 pounds this year is also set to graduate. ALL IN THE FAMILY In the history of the program, 29 different families have supplied the Sun Devils with multiple wrestlers, including a pair of brothers this year and a second-generation Sun Devil. Brothers Kyle and Kory DeBerry are the 27th set of brothers to be members of the Arizona State program with Kory joining his senior brother after winning four consecutive state titles at Sunnyside High School in Tucson, ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY WRESTLING

5 Roster / Notes a feat Kyle accomplished at the same school just five years earlier. COACHING ADDITIONS The season will see the addition of two additional coaches with Travis Pascoe joining the staff as an assistant coach, replacing Ben Askren, while recently-graduated national champion Anthony Robles will be a part of the team in a volunteer coach role while he continues his post-collegiate career of motivational speaking. Pascoe had served as a volunteer coach at Oregon State for the past five seasons and will bring a wealth of knowledge to the team s heavyweights, having been an All-American and hour-time NCAA qualifier during his collegiate years at Nebraska. ALUMNI UPDATE UFC 139 was a success for former Sun Devils with Dan Hendo Henderson winning the main event with a unanimous decision over Mauricio Shogun Rua while Ryan Bader earned a solid victory in the undercard against Jason Brilz. Cain Velasquez was unable to defend his UFC heavyweight title against up-and-coming Junior Do Santos, falling by TKO in the first round. Aaron A-Train Simpson won his bout against Eric Schafer in UFC 136 just under a month ago while Clifford Starks won his UFC debut on Oct. 29 against Dustin Jacoby.
