The chart above illustrates the Safe Routes activities in schools with existing plans. In addition to that, our partners without Safe Routes plans support the following initiatives: Park Brook Elementary implemented a Focus on Fitness program through before/after school classes and holds monthly Wellness Committee meetings consisting of staff, students, SRTS safety information fliers Formal SRTS map Engineering --- Exploring new New bike racks. --- in-street Separated bus crosswalk drop off/pick up signage with city area. Add new sidewalk for walkers Evaluation Yes Yes Yes Yes Anticipated *Due to recent receipt of funding, Odyssey Academy is still developing their action plan --- 2

3 and parents. These efforts coincide with Safe Routes programs, encouraging youth to be active and to learn skills for safe participation in fitness activities. Plymouth Middle School sees significant numbers of students biking to school and promotes a healthy educational environment, making them an ideal candidate for bicycle safety education. Further, they are interested in a Safe Routes program to improve and augment their infrastructure and numbers of students able to safely walk or bike to school. Three Rivers as well as Brooklyn Center and Brooklyn Park Parks and Recreation Departments focus on promoting healthy youth by building skills and confidence at their youth-based activities and summer camps. All three organizations are committed to integrating the Walk! Bike! Fun! Curriculum into these programs. Brooklyn Center Police Department has promoted Safe Routes initiatives through Walk-Bike Week safety presentations at multiple schools in the above chart. Further, officers intend to use the fleet to teach bicycle safety at bike rodeos, as strongly supported by Brooklyn Center SHIP funding which will bolster Safe Routes efforts within the community. 5 Bike Fleet Questions Briefly describe your plan for storing, scheduling, sharing and moving the bikes to schools and other organizations. (Limit 500 words) Storage of the trailer will be the responsibility of the organization using it at the time. Three Rivers will provide a home-base for the trailer at Clifton E. French Regional Park in Plymouth, MN, and will ensure that all other organizations using the trailer have appropriate storage plans. Each partner will securely store the trailer during their allotted time of use; each partner has confirmed this plan is feasible at their locations. Three Rivers will organize and approve all trailer usage scheduling via an online shared calendar. Each partner will have access and ability to add their dates of use. School partners will have priority during the academic year to ensure each has the opportunity to engage their students. All non-school partners will utilize the fleet during the summer months to ensure optimal usage. This scheduling plan will provide each partner the opportunity to reserve the fleet during their desired timeframe. Three Rivers plans to share the fleet with its partners for Physical Education classes, bike clubs, before/after school activities, youth and community programs, bike rodeos, structured recess activities, summer school programs, and other relevant opportunities to teach bicycle safety via the Walk! Bike! Fun! Curriculum. Three Rivers, the Parks and Recreation departments, and the Police department will use the fleet for programming events during the summer months, all of which will include a Walk! Bike! Fun! bicycling component. Throughout the partnership, Three Rivers staff will assist each partner with integration and implementation of the Walk! Bike! Fun! Curriculum to ensure success and to increase programming efforts throughout the first-tier Hennepin County suburbs. Each partner school has committed to collecting parent surveys and hand tallies for the duration of the fleet s ownership, and Three Rivers will complete the annual report. Each individual partner will assume liability for use of the bikes and carry necessary insurance when utilizing the equipment during their respective programs. Each partner will contribute to moving the trailer, but Three Rivers will organize all movement. When it is their turn to use it, each partner will be responsible for checking out the fleet from Three Rivers and picking up/returning the fleet when finished. Partners have confirmed that they have the resources to move the trailer. A check in/out sheet will be created to ensure safety. Briefly describe your plan to maintain the bicycle fleet for at least 5 years. Estimated annual parts and service are anticipated to range from $2,000-4,000. (Limit 250 words) Three Rivers will organize all maintenance needs for the bikes and trailer. Partnering with Venture North Bike Shop allows for annual tune-ups of all the bikes in the fleet. Venture North currently employs older students from Brooklyn Center Secondary through community education programs to gain bicycle maintenance skills and professional development. These programs will provide additional assistance with bicycle fleet maintenance while also involving older students. Danny 5

6 McCullough is an experienced bicycle mechanic and can perform repairs using the space at Venture North. Three Rivers has also committed general repair funding for minor issues such as the purchase of tires, tubes, or other low cost but necessary equipment. Should any additional service costs arise, Three Rivers will investigate outside funding sources. Three Rivers maintenance staff will perform trailer maintenance. The trailer will be added to the general vehicle maintenance list and will receive the same preventive maintenance attention as other Three Rivers trailers. The following maintenance will occur for the equipment s full life expectancy: Bikes- Fleet bicycles will receive one full tune-up each winter during slower use months. Tune-ups will occur in partnership with Venture North. An additional quick tune-up may be given during summer/fall months as need arises. Trailer- Twice per year the trailer will receive a complete inspection of tires, brakes, lights, doors, and wheel bearings. Evaluation Questions Successful applicants will be required to collect surveys about student travel behavior and hand tallies on how students travel to school.
