HELLINGPROOF Sports rights We would like to remind you that if you don't already have sports rights, you purchase these via the website of SC de Bongerd. If you want to be a Hellingproof member it is obligatory to have sports rights and training hours for all student sport clubs are granted by checking the number of members that are in possession of sport rights. Please make sure that you purchase these sport rights as soon as possible. Members weekend On the weekend of 6 & 7 January we are planning our first annual non-biking members weekend! During this weekend we will plan all kind of fun activities for you like Crazy 88, Living Stratego and other amazing activities that you will never forget! This is a great opportunity to know who the person under the helmet and sunglasses is. Since this is a running race and cyclists are known to be bad at running, we ask you to put on your running shoes and start training to prove everybody wrong. If you want to join please contact us. Batavierenrace On the 21st of April the Batavierenrace will take place. Last year we participated and ended up with a great result! We did this with a team consisting of Hellingprofs and Dutch Mountain members, this year Dutch Mountain won't be

2 Hellingproof goes international During the past weeks our bh'ers(famous hellingprofs) were and are active in international races. Julie competed in the Ironman world championships in Hawaii and Niels was racing in Cameroon and Guatemala and currently on his way to Indonesia. Niels is an idol for most African kids who own a bicycle due to winning last year's Tour of Congo, therefore he decided to please the cycling fans in Cameroon and he immediately showed his qualities by winning the peloton sprint of the first stage with a difference of 4 seconds over the peloton (but there were three escapees who could stay out of Niels his grip). After having shown his superiority, he happily granted the other stages to the local favourites. At the Vuelta a Guatamala, Niels didn't want to risk winning a peloton sprint when there is a breakaway in front, so he decided to join the breakaway himself. This immediately resulted in his first ever stage win in central America by beating his four breakaway companions with his superior sprint. The other stages were in the high mountains, an area not suited for the pure sprinters. So he joined the gruppetto in those stages but winning a stage and riding in the leader's jersey in the first stages will forever be part of Hellingproof history. All the local fans wanted to take a picture with our famous Hellingprof Niels While Niels was riding on the mainland, Julie flew over to the island of Hawaii for the Ironman world championship. She was kind enough to write a report about it for this cycling mail. Although it's a long story, we recommend you to read it all! My Ironman World Championships Race in Hawaii (By Julie) Sometimes you win, sometimes you learn Since my qualification last year in September, the Ironman World Championships on October 14, 2017 has been on my calendar. My entire year was dedicated to this race and I put in more work than ever before. Leading up to this highlight of the year I had some good results in other races and my form was improving throughout the entire season. I travelled to Hawaii three weeks before race day.

3 There I did my last important training sessions on the race course and I got to enjoy the hawaiian lifestyle before it would get serious. Everything looked great, I had adapted to the heat very well (at least I thought so), my training had gone great and I was feeling very fit. This made me go into the race with a very confident feeling. position. But she decided to stay with me and draft for about 100 km (which is against the rules in time trial triathlons). Racing the Ironman in Hawaii is something very special. It s said to be the hardest one day event in endurance sport. For triathletes this is the most important race worldwide and the only time we get some attention.:) It s an honour to participate there among the best of the best. That Saturday Morning at 7.20 am the canon went off for about 800 female athletes. And you are exposed to a battle field during the 3.8 km open water swim. Everyone wants to get a good spot and goes out pretty fast. So it s normal to get some kicks and punches on the way. My swim was pretty good, I felt strong and it went by quicker than I had expected. Coming out of the water my family told me that I was 15th in my category and that the first girl was 8 minutes ahead. This was good news, because I knew that catching up 8 minutes on a 180 km bike ride would be possible. I was happy to finally sit on my bike. My legs felt fresh while passing one girl after the other. Riding through the the lava fields is unbelievable hot and after 60 km the strong cross winds came out which makes the bike course really challenging. After about 70 km I had passed the last girl of my category so I got into first Julie during the Ironman world championships. I tried to find a moment where I could get rid of her, for example on the downhills and the aid stations. She was a strong rider and unfortunately she stayed right behind me after all. Since you all know my sprinting qualities, you know why I didn t give that a shot :). About 30 km before the bike course was finished we passed the last aid station where I didn t manage to grab enough water to fill up my bottles. At that moment I didn t know that it had been the last one. This turned out to be a big problem, I had to ride for about 45min without any fluids. In Holland this is not a problem, but in the heat of Hawaii that is a different story. I had never been so thirsty before which made my sight very blurry when I got off the bike. I tried to rehydrate in the transition area before starting the marathon. But noooo.. :( Starting my run the dizziness just got worse. What was happening to my body? I tried to run the pace I had planned on but after about

4 5km I could only see black. This was a really scary moment. I didn t know what to do, because I really wanted to keep going and win this race. Something told me to take a few steps walking so I wouldn t end up on the floor. This made it a little better. So after a while I tried running again. A few kilometres later: the same scenario. Two girls had passed me already, which was terrible for me. At that point I decided to just finish the race healthy instead of dropping out. I adapted the pace and went really slow. I can tell you, this was the hardest thing to do. All these training hours, this discipline, passion and dedication that I had put into this particular race seemed like I had done them for nothing. When I saw my mom after about 15 km I just fell into her arms and I couldn t avoid some tears squeezing out. It was impossible to understand why my body was doing this to me. Now I can conclude that it was the dehydration and the overheating which I couldn t recover from anymore. It ended up being the longest marathon I had ever done. Especially mentally this was the biggest challenge ever. It s easy to push hard and hurt yourself when you re in the lead of a race, but overcoming this situation was way beyond that. After 11h I was finally back in Kailua- Kona crossing the finish line. What a relief! I was glad that I hadn t passed out on the way and actually made it to the finish line. Crossing this iconic finish line is something indescribable. So many emotions in a state of complete exhaustion. I placed 7th in my category, this was not what I aimed for and the disappointment was huge. It took me almost 2 weeks to recover mentally from this pain and disappointment, many tears have fallen to understand why this race had turned out this way. I can now accept that it s just the way this sport works. Sometimes you win, sometimes you learn. I am happy to take these experiences into the next season of racing where I can hopefully benefit from them. And one thing is for sure. This wasn t my last time racing in Hawaii. Julie finishing the IRONMAN! We are all very proud of her.

5 Winter training Last week our winter training program has started. This includes the traditional spinning training on Wednesday and a strength training afterwards for everyone who wants to be a 'topsprinter' like Niels. During the training the turn-out was better than ever before on spinning trainings due to the immense increase in popularity of spinning among Hellingprofs. After the training there was time for a drink in the Bongerd sports pub. want you to design them. So grab your pencil and paper and make a design that will stand out in the peloton! The Hellingproof socks will be of ideal cycling length as stated in the rules of the aesthetic committee. You can send your design to wielrenners.wageningen@gmail.com. Besides these indoor trainings we will still be doing our training rides on Monday, just make sure you bring your lights! And, just like last year, we will go for some weekend endurance rides with de Domrennner from Utrecht. During these rides you can meet other student cyclists and spot some of your competitors of next year's student cups. These training rides will take place on the following dates: Sunday 19 November 2017 Saturday 16 December 2017 Sunday 14 January 2018 Saturday 17 February 2018 Sock design contest Robin fitting the Hellingproof casual clothing line, don't worry this won't be the definite caps. As you might know, we are working on a Hellingproof goes casual clothing line. During the Bongerd sport pub drink on Wednesday, there was also an opportunity to fit the Hellingproof shirt, sweater and caps. But we are also working on Hellingproof socks, to make sure everyone likes these socks(and reduce our own work load) we

To emphasize the good relationship with our freshly signed sponsor, our secretary Rutger personally handed over the new Hellingproof jersey to Peter Prins. Answer can be found at the very end of the cycling mail. *DISCLAIMER: This quiz was made in Dutch, there could be some (intentional) mistakes in the translation. Race Licence It is possible to order your racing licences for next year, but we kindly request you to wait a bit longer since we are finalizing the paperwork to be a official KNWU team. This means that (when the paperwork is finalized) you can get a racing licence which shows your riding for Hellingproof. We will have finalized the paperwork with more than enough time left before the start of the racing season. We will inform you when you can order your licence. For the people who are still in doubt whether or not they should get a racing licence, here are some reasons why you should get one: The pre season medical check which was obligatory for people who want a racing licence is from now on not obligatory anymore. This will save you a lot of money! The last couple of years everybody with a racing licence got a bill from the KNWU at the end of the month, which showed the amount of money they had to pay at the end of the month for the races they had ridden during that month. Next year there won't be any extra costs for riding races. This does mean a licence will be a little more expensive, but after a few races it will be relatively cheaper than last year.

8 Ghent 6 day Our favourite Irishman Conor had the amazing idea to cycle to Ghent at the 16th of November and watch the six days of Ghent in Belgium. This is one of the most prestigious 6 days events in the velodrome. The races are in 't kuipke which is, with its 166,6 meter, one of the shortage velodromes in the world. On 12 December you can unveil your amazing creations to our jury in Annie's kroeg. Bake your most creative cakes or stick a traditional recipe to pleasure our taste buds. Quiz answers 1. Bunnies Dutch Food Valley cycling team The owner of Loburg, one of our sponsors, has started a great initiative. He is setting up an elite cycling team for cyclists in the 'food valley' region. Hellingproof members will, together with cyclist from other teams in the region, be getting the opportunity to join this team and race in the highest amateur level in the Netherlands. It is a very ambitious program with an experienced and motivated staff.
