Cycling mail 6 Year 5 12 December 2017 W.S.W.V. HELLINGPROOF Heel hellingproof bakt Tonight the long awaited Heel Hellingproof Bakt Season 2 will take place in Annies kroeg. From 20:00 you are welcome to bring your creations to our jury, also known as the ''Hellingproevers''. In the Hellingprofs app we already saw various approaches from our bakers. Some went straight into the baking while others consulted a cooking book for recipes to minimize the chance of messing up. Activities Club Monday training 18:00 at the Bongerd. 2 Wednesday Spinning training 17:15 at the Bongerd. 2 Training at Sports Centre the Bongerd Mountain biking: Thursday 14:00-16:00. 1 Other Activities Tuesday 12 December: Heel Hellingproof bakt Thursday 14 December: sportcafé Wageningen Saturday 16 December: Domrenner training 1 For this activity you have to sign up via the SITE/App of Sports Centre the Bongerd 2 Signing up is not necessary Domrenner training This Saturday, the 16th of December, we will have our second endurance ride with the Domrenner of the offseason. Last time there was a low turn-out from our side. The weather coming Saturday will be as good as you can expect on a winter ride and it's a perfect opportunity to release yourself from the stress caused by the upcoming exams. So this time we expect all of you to join to make sure the Hellingproof green overshadows the Domrenner Yellow. We hope to see you all at 10:00 at the Bongerd! We have high expectations from Luuk. Sportcafé Wageningen Coming Thursday 14 December in the patio the yearly prizes for the best athletes from Wageningen will be awarded. We are proud to say that our very own Julie is nominated for one of the awards. Rumours say that Julie might be challenged by someone with the name of ''Annemiek van Vleuten''. After doing some
research on this person we can conclude that her result list is nowhere near as impressive as Julie's. This means that when Julie doesn't win, the elections must have been rigged. Loburg drink with IJzersterk Two weeks ago we gathered for a drink at Loburg as usual, but this time our friends from IJzersterk joined us. It was a great opportunity to meet some new friends and learn a thing or two about the crazy sport some people do when the cycling season comes to an end: Speed Skating. At first we thought that nobody from IJzersterk would show up, but it turned out that they had agreed to meet at Loburg thirty minutes later. So quickly we were outnumbered by the speeds skaters. We also noticed that the men/women ratio at IJzersterk was more evenly divided, this almost made some hellingprofs switch sports. All in all we had a great evening and we are looking forward to our next activity with IJzersterk. Apparently Bas won this beautiful gift last year and he was so grateful that he wanted Thijs to have it back, but Thijs really wanted Bas to have it. The game ended up being about two things: Who gets the hay bale so that they have a comfortable seat, and how takes the handlebar back home? Thijs or Bas? At the end almost everybody went home with a smile on their face, except for Bas because Thijs got to go home with the handlebar, and Julie was upset because her son Gijs got a non vegan, expired condom. Thijs is very happy to finally hold his handlebar again and Olivier found a place for his new bell. IJzersterkers and Hellingrpofs discussing each other's Batavierenrace tactics. Sinterklaas Last week at 5 December we came together to celebrate Sinterklaas at Conor's place. We asked everybody to bring two small gifts for a game. Perhaps Niels his idea of small changed while he was cycling in every continent except Europe and he decided to bring a hay bale. When all the gifts were piled up in the middle of the room, Thijs noticed a wrapped gift that looked a lot like a handlebar he brought to last year's Sinterklaas. Battle of the studies and ssv's After a slightly disappointing result at the Thymos sports night, we decided to make Hellingproof great again. With the victory at the USA sportsday still in our minds, we felt stronger and fitter than ever. Supplemented with some fresh power of our new member Jeroen no one could stop us from winning the Battle of the studies and ssv s. Somewhat overconfident we started off with a cow milking game. Unfortunately our Harmen the goat milker Baas wasn t there to show the rest of the team the finesse of this craft and thus we didn t stand a chance against a group of farmers. But this loss did not stand in the way of great things to come. The next few games (shooting potatoes, sumowrestling, farmers golf) were easily won and new glory was almost unavoidable. Of course this was also due to the fact that everybody had already been training for the Batavierenrace and thus was
in good shape. However, because running at very high speeds had become standard for all team members this way, no one could handle the jumping in a bag very well. Onno even decided to leave the country for half a year to recover from this experience. Martijn wearing his beautiful Hellingproof jersey. They were not used to the low pace of the sack-race. Luckily we could go inside and play dodge ball after this blamage. This appeared to be the ultimate way to make a comeback. Tjalle even placed himself in the Hellingproof hall of fame with his outstanding performances. At a certain point he made the rest of the team feel so inferior to him that they decided to leave the dodgeball field and let him play alone against three other teams to respect his greatness. Some argue that this magnificence has something to do with his partly Frisian roots. Being in the winning mood again the last games would be a piece of cake. But then suddenly a terrible accident happened, a wave of shock moved through Fryslân: Alger twisted his ankle and was unable to continue. Out of sympathy with his fate the rest of the team refused to play the finale and lost on purpose to make sure not enough points were collected. But the knowledge of how great this evening could have ended gives us even more motivation for winning the next event. Interview In this week's interview we have a chat with one of our board members. He is currently functioning as our race commissioner, a new function within the board. Name: Bas Overdevest Age: 21, but you're as old as you feel Where do you originate from? I m originally from the capital of the Netherlands, the beautiful over crowded city named Amsterdam. I lived in the far west of the city, the city centre was as far as the city centre of Haarlem. So lucky for me I was always quickly out of town by bike What is your current study and/or work? I m in my third year of the bachelor spacial planning and now I m also currently in the learn to be a geography teacher in my minor program. Besides my study I also work in a bike shop so I can afford to be a cyclist. What kind of bicycles do you use?
On the moment I have six bikes. Which are in the category racing bikes: Giant TCR Advanced FF / Giant Propel Advanced Pro. For the dirt and beach I use my Trek x-caliber viper red mountain bike. I also have a track/fixed gear bike a Dracat piste and last but not least my city bikes a 40 year old simplex and a BSP transporter bike. pain more. Sounds strange maybe but especially the convulsion later the day after a hard race, than you know you did something good. But my number one motivation is that I can really enjoy all the surroundings during my cycling trips. That s why you will never find me on Wednesday at the spinning training. When did you start cycling? I remember that I was bored of judo and I said to my mom that I wanted something different. My mother had a friend who s son cycled at a cycling club. So I tried it ones and a half year later I cycled my first race and the addiction was complete. Until this moment I m still not cured. What are your hobbies besides cycling? I have al lot of activities and some addictions but I don t think I have a real hobby besides cycling. For example I like to drink a nice beer at odd times and I m currently also a bartender, that s really nice. However I see my Saturday job and board/ Commission work as a hobby. Therefore I like to invest a lot of time and effort in it. What is your greatest cycling experience? I had a lot of great cycling experience. I don t think I can pick one. Secretly I hope the greatest cycling experience has yet to come. Most of the time I can really enjoy the training camps abroad and the multi-day stages (both in the Netherland and abroad). In a few days you build a bond with your teammates, staff and you learn to know your competitors much better. Most of the time it is one big adventure with travelling, sleeping and a lot of food. Of course winning a race gives you a really nice feeling, but I don t think that s my number one motivation. I enjoy the game, satisfaction and What are your goals for the season?(both individually and for the Hellingpoof team) The most important thing is (yes it is very cliché) to have a lot of fun. I will ride every race next season as if it were the last. That means not waiting for the sprint but go for the attack. And I think one of the race highlights this year will be the GNSK in Wageningen. I will have one month of training and cycling abroad so I hope to start in great shape so we as Hellingproof (Wageningen) can grab the title. Board adventures The board has been busy lately, travelling from place to place to meet the boards of other student cycling associations. First we went Utrecht for the constitution drink of the Domrenner. We already knew some of their board members due to our combined training rides. Alger and Tjalle, stimulated by the free beers, integrated with some volleyball players and speed skaters from Utrecht before they went up to the new Domrenner board and congratulated them with some stroopwafels which made them even happier to see our hellingprofs. Alger and Tjalle quickly went back to the station to catch one of the last possible trains settled for some good night's rest. Because the following day, they were joined by Rutger and the board of IJzersterk(Bram, Martijn and Stefan) for a trip to Amsterdam for the constitution drink of SKITS. On the way to Amsterdam Bram almost managed to get a free trip to Newcastle for the weekend from a random guy we met in the train.
Unfortunately for Bram, the wife of the random guy didn't want to let a stranger enter their car. When they entered the bar in Amsterdam we were immediately disappointed by the fact that there was no free beer. But they cheered up again after seeing their friends from WTOS Delft, this was the first time they saw another student cycling association at a constitution drink. IJzersterk had to use brute force to make sure the SKITS board would have a joined activity. This is not the Hellingproof way of making friends, so Alger, Tjalle and Rutger used their charms and stroopwafels(with succes). To end the night on a good note they could watch Sven Kramer's win at the 5k, this was of course no surprise due to his Frisian roots. BATA During Sinterklaas we noticed that there already is a lot of enthusiasm for the Batavierenrace considering the surprisingly large amount of poems about the Bata. But we only had a few official applications. We understand that it's difficult to fit writing s in to your busy training scheme for the Bata. But applying will only take a few minutes of your time and we are sure that you can use some rest from your hard training efforts to write a to wielrenners.wageningen@gmail.com It would be a shame if you forget to apply because you are too busy training. One of the most outstanding sock designs. Hellingproof goes international Our member Niels is back from his two-month adventure. After racing in Cameroun, Guatemala and Indonesia he has arrived back in The Netherlands. His follow-up of races started with the GP Chantal Biya in Cameroun. Call him a friendly dictator, or a worse democrat, but Paul Biya is the president of Cameroun for 35 years now. As a sign of love to his wife he made the government organize a stage race and named it after his wife Chantal Biya. Sockcontest During the past couple of weeks we saw some great entries for our sock design contest. In the coming days the board(in consultation with the aesthetic commission) will come together to make a decision on which socks are good enough to be put on a facebook poll so you can vote which socks you want to wear. The always beautiful Chantal Biya.
The race itself was just as charismatic as miss Chantal Biya herself. Unlike her husband, she is one of the most loved persons in the country. The race itself is profiled as the best organised African road race. Well, we found out that is not always true. Time is relative in large parts of Africa. It is there, and they make arrangements, but more as a guideline than as a ruler. Not this time. For the start of the race, 11:00 am is 11:00 am, so you better be ready. On the way to the second stage the bus rode flat. After waiting for 1.5 hour, we finally could continue to the start. We arrived at 10:55 with the bikes still on the bus and everyone in normal clothes. Changing clothes in the bus took three minutes, finding your bike and moving to the podium another one, than signing, after which the race director took the gun and just started the race. During the neutral two km back to the team car for some bottles and food, taking a pee, and the race could start. I was impressed; Africans can be on time if they want, no matter the conditions. The race went fine as well. Three out of four days I was in the break-away. It is always nice to ride in front of the peloton playing cat and mouse. Well, the cat won unfortunately. No good results were obtained, but I did enjoy it. Next year I might go back for the win, riding a bit cleverer. From Cameroun I flew to Guatemala. We had a few free days before the race would start and in the short coffee rides in those days we already noticed that riding on meter altitude is a different story. You cannot go over your limits, because you won t recover from it. If you go into the red, you re screwed all day. Combine that with the fact that last year two out of six Dutch riders made it to the finish and you know it will be one big sufferfest. First stage was relative easy. Three climbs during the stage, but long descends starting from and finishing on 400 m altitude. Right from the start the descend started and average speed was around km/h. After the first climb the pace dropped and a flatter road arose. Time to attack. Due to the lower altitude temperature rose to 35 degrees Celsius, making it difficult conditions. Exactly what I like. Together with four companions we created a five minutes advantage on the peloton, the sign to save energy. In the final kilometre one rider attacked. I waited for the others to respond. The first rider tried to bridge the gap but his pace stabilized. The sign for another rider to attack. He bridged the gap to 50 meter but he could not close it. Time for me. I bridged the gap in the last 150 meters of the stage and with a jump on the line I passed him. My first UCI win, nice to achieve in such a hard race as Guatemala. I could keep the yellow jersey for three days, but fell back in the general classification as soon as the real mountains started. After Guatemala finished, I flew to Indonesia the morning after the race. Being in the airplane for two days, I arrived the day before my first Indonesian race would start. Building up the bike in the night, the race started at 08:00 in the morning. I don t know what happened, but I missed the final break of 15 riders, while we were riding in a peloton of around 60 guys. Damn, ambitions for the classification gone. The other days the task was easy. Keep our Indonesian rider on the podium. Easy days, getting bottles, get food, ride on the front, neutralize attacks and ride easy to the finish as soon as you get dropped. During the second day I neutralized an attack, but the peloton let go. That is nice, get into the break for free. I dropped my companion with 20 km to go
and continued alone. With 5 km to go I still had a one minute lead, but everything became black for my eyes. I could not go faster than 35 km/h anymore and got caught with 2 km to go. Bummer. Everything went perfect, but the body protested that day. With temperatures over 40 degrees I got dehydrated. I should have read Julie her story about the Ironman twice to learn from the mistakes you sometimes make during a race. There is no one who dares to challenge Niels for best cycling tan lines. After a few easy days where I did some diving and snorkeling on Sumatra, another important UCI race started. With a complete different team it became a difficult execution again. With Asian style climbs (averages of 8%, but roads that climb 20% combined with flatter sections) I realized my weight was not suitable for the roads, or the other way around of course. Anyway, too fat is too fat and my role got decreased to assisting our better riders. In the end, that is a role I like most. Work all day, be everywhere, pull in the front if necessary and to jump on everything that moves into the break. The racing period ended on the other side of Sumatra. No mountains and no nature anymore. Three days of flat roads through palm-oil plantations. The conditions I like; wind, chaos and straight roads with crosswinds. Directly from the start I pulled full-gas. A teammate attacked and within two km we had a break-away with four out of seven from our team. My task was to control the peloton, which made it an easy day for me. Well, not completely. Two teammates got dropped, which changed the situation. I tried to bridge the gap of two minutes with three other riders in the final 50 km. In the final 2 km we were behind the cars, but we did not catch them. Nothing more than 9 th was my share. A disappointing result in such a race. Everyone said that the other two days would be just bunch sprints. If something triggers me to show otherwise, it is exactly that. The Malaysian team of the yellow jersey, which were actually two teams, controlled the race. It was chaos everywhere, attack after attack came and the peloton broke a few times. Halfway the race there were boni-seconds to earn, so I pulled fullgas for our rider that was in the break the day before. He did manage to get some seconds back, first mission accomplished. Right after the sprint I attacked and rode away with three others. We never got more than 50 seconds, so no team car could bring us water anymore. Luckily I had big bottles and a spare one in my shirt, so I survived. With 20 km to go, the other did not wanted to cooperate anymore and the lead dropped to 20 seconds. I wanted to wait for the last 10 km, but had no choice. I attacked again, this time going solo. Pretty soon the gap was one
minute again, so I dropped the pace. The later they would catch me, the better it would be for them, so I gambled they would let me swim up front. They did and in the final 10 km I went full gas for the win. The long straight roads were not in the advantage, but as long as you pull 50 km/h, they need to ride faster to close the gap, which is not easy. I do not like to admit that others are right, but in the final 2 km I had to. The peloton caught me and it became a bunch sprint. I did not obtain any results, the same holds for the final stage. Not only the final stage, but the final race of the season. It is over. It might be over for a long time. I managed to qualify myself for the Red Bull Trans Siberian Extreme, the longest road race of the world km in 24 days, riding from Moscow to Vladivostok, right through Siberia. If I manage to get the money together for the entrance fee, my 2018 season will be focused on that single event. Let's hope it succeeds.
