This event will take the best climbs and scenery in North GA and challenge riders to go beyond what they think is reasonable and possible in human performance. The Grinduro is not for your average/intermediate or beginner cyclist. Even the Radical is an advanced level event that will take most riders over 4-5 hours to complete. This event is a test against yourself as well as the others that will line up with you at the start line. You be be forced to leave the comfort zone behind and test your physical limits and equipment to the maximum. Our Scramble distance will be the event for the new gravel racer/rider. The Scramble will still have more than 80% gravel/dirt/clay roads and over 3,000 feet of climbing so even the shortest event is quite a test. The Grinduro day of events will be fully supported, staffed and permitted with local government and police. There will be professionally chip timed KOM Segments, fully stocked Aid Stations, partially marked courses and amazing friendly competition. About the Promoter: TopView Sports has been a leader in bicycle race/ride promotion in the Southeast since We have produced more days of racing than any other club in the region year after year. We specialize in chip timing and enjoy the technical aspect of race promotion. Our owner, Tim Molyneaux has been a racer for over 30 years and ALWAYS puts the racers needs/desires at the top of the list when promoting a event. His moto, Course is King has never been more true than at this years Grinduro. The selected routes for this event stack up to anything in the country for scenery, quality of surface, lack of auto traffic, climbing, and just pure awesome riding. We will continue to make this an event you don t want to miss each year. Welcome to Helen, Ga and the great mountains and views of Northeast Georgia. 2
AID STATIONS: Support Crew/Family are welcome to meet riders at these areas and provide special food or supplies there. No bicycle equipment can be changed however. Repairs are of course allowed but no replacement bicycles/wheels are allowed. Scramble: ONE Aid Station: Top of Unicoi GAP All 3 groups pass this Aid Station Radical : 3 Aid Stations: Top of Unicoi GAP Wildcat Rd. Mile 31 Both Grinduro & Radical End of Lon Lyons Mile 49.7 Grinduro: FIVE Aid Stations: 1.Top of Unicoi GAP- Mile Wildcat Rd End - (Mandatory Checkpoint) Mile Liberty Baptist- (Mandatory Checkpoint) Mile Brooks Little General Store Corner of Burton Dam and 197 Mile End of Lon Lyons Rd. Mile 93 3
CHECK POINTS: Aid Stations 2 & 3 will double as Check Points: Riders must officially check in and sign initials with staff upon arrival. This is for rider safety and route distance verification. Grinduro Riders must reach the Wildcat Creek Check Point/ Cut off by Noon in order to continue on the course. Riders who arrive after Noon will be forced to turn right and take up the Radical Course back to Helen. Grinduro Riders must arrive at the Liberty Baptist Mile 50 Check Point by 3:00 pm in order to continue on the course. Radical & Scramble Riders do not have any Cutoff times in place however it is recommended that riders be able to maintain at least 10 mph on mixed terrain. TIMED SEGMENTS: Grinduro: 3 Timed Segments PLUS Overall Time 1. Mile Total Distance=13.3 Miles (all Gravel) 2. Mile Total Distance=16.3 Miles (Mostly Gravel) 3. Mile Total Distance=8 Miles (all Gravel) Radical: 2 Timed Segments PLUS Overall Time 1. Mile Total Distance=13.3 Miles (all Gravel) 2. Mile Total Distance=8 Miles (all Gravel) Scramble: Overall Time Only 4
Event Rules: 1. There will be mandatory check-points along the route where all riders must check in. This is for rider safety and route distance verification. These and the other Aid Stations will also make a great place for family and support crew to cheer and help riders. 2. KOM/QOM will be based on 3(Grinduro) 2(Radical) timed segments along the route. Segments will be full mountain passes and not just climbs. To be a true King or Queen you will need to go down as well as up. SAFE & FAST is the Key! 3. Riders must carry all the supplies/tools they need for the rides. Outside support is only allowed for riders that need to be removed from the course. There will be limited Mechanical Support at AS#2, AS#5. No support/drinks from a moving vehicle are allowed. We, the race promotion will not be able to come rescue every broken down bicycle on course. You need to make plans to have help or support to get off course. If you make it to one of the 5 AID Stations that is the best place to get rescued. 4. Riders are responsible to learn/know/navigate the course. Digital Versions of the courses are available for download/upload to cycling computers/gps devices. Printed Cue sheets will be available at check-in. There will be limited course markings at key intersections but most of the course is so remote that marking it is not possible. 5. Rider Conduct: We require that athletes conduct themselves in a manner that is sportsmanlike and fair. Any activities deemed harmful to the event or community will result in disqualification and the rider will be asked to leave the course. 6. Bike Racing/Riding in this manner is dangerous and should be restricted to experienced riders. Please use caution and utmost concentration when riding these courses. You are responsible for your safety and the riders around you. 7. Riders are not allowed to advance on the course by any other means than the two wheeled, non-motorized bicycle that they started on. E-Bikes, although cool are not allowed at the Grinduro. The course must be completed as outlined and all check-points must be counted for a rider to be considered an "official finisher". 8. Drafting is allowed between registered participants only. It is not allowed to have a non-participant rider along the route to draft with. This will be enforced by fellow participants, in which two witnesses will serve as enough for a DQ. 9. All roads on the course, paved or dirt are open to traffic. Please use your head and brakes. Yield to traffic if you don't have the right of way. Keep in mind that when going from a dirt road to a paved road you will never have the right of way. 5
10. If you are badly injured while on course please call 911. To other races, please don't be afraid to give assistance to other racers. Remember that the next accident could be you and professional help can be too far away. Some of the areas of the courses are pretty remote so cell service is limited. This is why we require that all athletes carry a small first aid kit with them. 11. Bicycle restrictions: There aren't many as we want this to be as inviting as possible to the masses. ONE EXCEPTION: NO E-BIKES. They are cool, yes, but not invited to a ride/race like this. Two working brakes are required even for the single speeds. Front and rear lights are required for the Grinduro and the Radical and Scramble riders must use at least a tail light. Aero bars are allowed although most roads on the course would make them useless. Cross, Gravel, and Mountain Bikes are all allowed. The best suited bike for the courses will be a cross or gravel bike. Suggested gearing is at least a There are pitches on gravel/dirt roads at 22% so plan accordingly. 12. Cut off times for the Grinduro will be enforced for rider safety. Riders must make it to the 31 mile check in point by Noon to be allowed to continue on the Grinduro Course. This point will be at the aid station just off a paved section where crew/friends can easily come and cheer on riders. This is based on a 10 mph average speed and a total finish time of 11 hours. The second Check Point is at mile 50. Grinduro riders must arrive here before 3pm to be allowed to continue on the Grinduro Course. 13. All timing will be done with the RACE RESULT Pro Chip Timing System and this data will be sent back to the finish line remotely and instantly. This will allow us to know where athletes are on course and provide the timing data for the segments. Each athlete must wear the provided neoprene ankle strap with timing chip. This must be returned to the event registration tent at the completion of your adventure. Riders who fail to return the timing chip will be charged $100. We will have volunteers at the finish line to retrieve them from you so you shouldn't be able to forget unless you abandon and don't cross the finish line. 6
