Andrew s professional entertainment career led him to work on cruise ships where he discovered art auctions. He is a licensed Texas Auctioneer with a National Auctioneer Association Certificate Specialist in Benefit Auctions. PAPHA is excited to have Bost Benefit Auctions for this fundraiser. Check out some of the comments about Andrew: "Andrew Bost is a power house of an auctioneer. I never knew how entertaining and exciting an auction could be before I saw Andrew in action. I ve seen him generate laughter and money where I would have thought it was not possible. He is a master showman, master entertainer and master auctioneer all rolled into one" "Throughout the night I kept hearing from board members and from party guests that Andrew is the best auctioneer we have ever had." "As an auctioneer, Andrew has a rare gift, he is very entertaining. I don t know where he gets his energy from, but he can keep a benefit auction going and the energy level high." 3 Museum Director s Report November was a good month. New Board Members Mr. Charles Butt has joined us as a member of our board of Advisory Trustees. His expertise in building the HEB grocery chain is well known, and we are delighted to have him on our team. Mr. Butt is the owner of the historic Aransas Pass Light Station in Lydia Ann Channel. He has restored the structure and is a fine steward of this important part of our history. Gulf Coast Schooner The schooner hull is home. Sundance Services donated a boom knuckle-truck and a father and son team, Raul Sr. and Jr., to lift, load, and move the 40 structure to its home behind the Farley Boat Works. We drew a lot of stares as we drove it onto the ferry and again as we unloaded it at the Boat Works. It is not everyday you see a historic replica sailing ship get on the Port Aransas Ferry. Actually, I feel pretty certain this is a first and only event We can now begin the process of finishing it and going sailing. There is about 2 years of work ahead of us to make the hull into a complete boat and launch it. We are in discussion with Andros Kryptagoras, a professional ship builder, to instruct us in the process of finishing the schooner properly. Andros is the man 'SATURDAY' Cont. from Page 1 boats to look at. The next party will be on Saturday, Jan. 4. Y all come enjoy. who just finished the rebuild and re-fit of the tall ship Elissa in Galveston. Farley Boat Works We have reached a new level of organization at the Farley Boat Works with the addition of Bobbie Dunlap as volunteer office manager. The shop has become so busy that we needed someone to spend time just keeping up with orders and records. Bobbie has brought a new sense of order to the office. Boat Works manager Darrell Lynn is building a great team of volunteers and the shop is always buzzing. Three boats are currently underway and all are fine examples of our craftsmanship. The shop crew hosts a party every first Saturday from 5 p.m. until. and all are invited. Good food, good company, good fun, live music, and lots of fine wooden boats to look at. Y all come. Old Town Branch The Old Town Branch of the museum has experienced continued good visitation. Several new contacts were made with folks who have pictures, and even some movies, of our little town from the 40 s and 50 s. We have had several groups of students from the Flour Bluff school district led by gifted teacher Cliff Strain. Cliff is a Port A resident who has earned a reputation as one of the finest handson teachers around. Gift Shop The best little gift shop in town brought in $2149 in sales for the month of November. Cam Pratt and the docents under Mary Novak s leadership tend the store. Fundraising The fundraising committee has held several meetings, and there is much to report. We are bringing in a new auctioneer this year for our annual dinner/ auction. Andrew Bost, a professional auctioneer who specializes in nonprofit fundraising auctions, will be joining our team. The committee was impressed with his resume and with his presence during our video interview with him. He had a lot of new ideas and seemed quite confidant we can break our previous records this year. Jane Gillette has generously donated her time and talent to create the graphics for the event, a sample being the Save The Date announcement we used in our earlier blast and reproduced in this month s newsletter. The focus this year will be to retire the note on the Farley Boat Works property, to increase our endowment, and to raise the funds needed to finish and launch our Texas Scow Schooner. 4 Boat Building 104 By Joe Calvey, Sr. Photos available for download at zenfolio.com/joecalvey As the dreamer of dreams and a traveling man I have chalked up many a mile Jimmy Buffet, 1978, Son of a Son of a Sailor In a previous life, if there is such a thing, I firmly want to believe I was a Viking. My wife, Angie, insists that the closest I ll ever get to being one was when I was in high school; we were the Vikings. My seventeen-year-old son, Joey, joins his mother in this rebuke. Farley Boat Works manager and shop master, Darrell Lynn, says This is Port Aransas; you can be anything you want to be. You want to be a Viking, you re a Viking. The 15-ft boat Joey and I are building retains the core features of the Texas skiff that has been around for 100 years. With help from some of the volunteer boat builders, Pat Farley, Jim Johnson, Denny Larkin, James Travis, and Bubba Milina, we kept the transom at its tallest possible height, along with the stem where later an ornamental object can be attached. The open gunwales remind me of an earlier time, and the breastplate, hand carved by Jim, gives the boat a decidedly Viking look. Port Aransas Museum s Rick Pratt reopened the Farley Boat Works in 2011 to bring boat building back to Mustang Island. Since then, 16+ boats have been built. They range from the classic Texas skiff to 20-ft long center console models. Our boat is number 17. Not all have reached the water though. The original Farley Boat works was established by Fred Farley around 1916 and was carried on by his two sons, Jim and Fred. This is where, as a youngster, Bubba Milina learned the craft that enabled him to build more than 50 boats of his own. At age 95, Bubba is still helping and actively building. First, we built and assembled the key pieces of this all mahogany boat. The parts include a plywood transom, solid stem, and plywood sides. The transom is reinforced with 4 solid trim pieces, 5 inches wide by 1½ inches thick, that run side-to-side and top-to-bottom. After attaching the plywood sides forward and aft, we glued and screwed the 16-ft mahogany inner rails to the sides with the use of a spreader rig to help bend these magnificent pieces of wood to fit. These chines provide both side support and the area to attach the floorboards. To provide additional stability, a splash rail is attached in the same manner from the stem to the transom on each side of the boat. Next, using a reciprocating saw, we trimmed the excess wood from bottom of the stem. With a steady hand, we traced the shape of the boat on a 15-ft, 8 inch plywood sheet. Using a circular saw, this shape was cut out then screwed and glued to the chines. The boat now had a bottom, a momentous occasion in every boat-building project. It was fortuitous that on this day Charlie Fisher, the Port Aransas Harbor Master, launched his Farley boat for the first time. Even if the shop had air conditioning and was the lap of luxury on this hot summer day, everyone there would have ventured down to the launch ramp to congratulate Charlie on his boat. The Dragon Fly is as iridescent a bright green as anything on earth. This center-console fishing boat is both artwork and craftsmanship. A robust crowd gathered as Charlie eased his creation off its trailer into the murky water near the ferry line. A few anxious moments and a surge adrenaline later, Charlie was in gear. And so was his building partner, Ken Curlee, who raced in flip flops to extend his foot just in time so the bow he spent over 100 hours painting would miss a nearby dock. A few minutes later, the pair headed out into the ship channel and raced back and forth to the delight of the Farley crowd gathered on the harbor jetty. Filled with enthusiasm for our own build, we headed back to the tin building that held our dreams. Remember, our boat at this point is upside down to attach the bottom, so it must be flipped upright. This always provides a few anxious moments. One larger boat required the assistance of the mechanic crew from nearby Nolan s Marine. See 'BUILDING' on Page 6 Page 4 PAPHA Newsletter December 2013

5 OLD NEWS Port Aransas Post December 5, 1911 Rousing Meeting Commercial Club The attendance at the Commercial Club Monday night was better than it has been for some time. Considerable enthusiasm was manifested in the several important propositions brought before the meeting for consideration. One of the most interesting features of the meeting was the review of the year s work by the club s president, W.B. Harmon. In his talk he pointed out a few things which were the direct results of the Commercial Club s efforts. In part he said: On January 6, 1911 our club had its beginning. In February we had several thousand illustrated folders of Port Aransas which were sent to all parts of the country. In March we petitioned the Post Office Department and succeeded in having our name changed from Tarpon to Port Aransas which took effect April 1st. In June we closed a deal with the Texas Oil Company to put in a 37,500 barrel tank for the purpose of making Port Aransas the distributing point for Southwest Texas. In September we closed a deal for the publication in Port Aransas of The Port Aransas Post which is now heralding the merits of our city to the four corners of the earth. In October we petitioned our county judge for incorporation. In November we incorporated under the commission form of government, electing a mayor and two commissioners, and taking into our incorporate limits the north end of Mustang Island a strip ten thousand feet long and four thousand feet wide along the deepwater front of Harbor Island. In December we petitioned congress for a survey and establishing of a harbor line on Mustang Island side, which has been favorably considered. These and a number of matters under consideration which cannot be given out at this time shows the results of the club s efforts in We are looking to a banner year in Japonica Runs Aground The big passenger yacht, Japonica running between Port Aransas and Corpus Christi ran aground yesterday off Ingleside Point and was delayed three hours, arriving here at 2:30 p.m. She carried a number of sightseers who were badly disappointed in not having more time here. Milina-Mathews A quiet home wedding was solemnized Wednesday afternoon at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Mathews, in the southern part of town when Mr. John Milina of Galveston was united in marriage to Miss Bessie Mathews. The ceremony was performed at 2:00 o clock by Justice of the Peace W.B. Harmon in the presence of but few relatives and friends. Immediately after the ceremony was said and congratulations offered all repaired to the dining room where an elegant luncheon was in waiting. The bride and groom left on the 3:30 boat for Galveston where they will make their future home. This marriage was the culmination of an interesting romance, the contracting parties being very popular in their circle of friends. Oil Barge In The Steam Tug Della under the direction of Capt. Ed. Mercer, pulled in again this week with a big barge of oil from Port Arthur. The company has already stored several barges of oil in their big storage tank. New Barber This Week D. Dale of Kinsley, Kan. came in this week and will have charge of the Mercer barber shop until the return of John Mercer who is in Galveston undergoing an operation for appendicitis. Mr. Dale is an experienced barber and thinks he will locate with us permanently. Prohibition The National Prohibitionists have selected Atlantic City as their convention city next June. Now, what is the matter with the Anti-Prohibitionists pulling off their convention at the other seaside city of Port Aransas? New Boat Under Construction Chick Roberts, our well known boat builder, who has just finished a thirty-foot patrol boat for the State Fish Commissioner, has begun the construction of a gasoline launch 24 feet in length with 6 6 beam, to be propelled by a 10 to 12 horse power Bridgeport engine. Mr. Roberts has built a number of classy motor boats and launches now to be seen in Port Aransas Harbor. Page 5 PAPHA Newsletter December 2013

6 Scow Reaches New Home By Rick Pratt The scow schooner hull is now in Port Aransas. Sundance Services volunteered a big crane and truck combo to being our schooner home. This is a really generous gift indeed, as these machines are very expensive and in great demand in the oil patch right now. We met the trucking team at 9 am in A r a n s a s Pass behind Herb Lancaster s f u r n i t u r e f a c t o r y, and the s c h o o n e r was safely set up at its new home behind the Farley Boat Works by 11:30. Thanks to all who helped. Ken Curlee and his soon to be son-in-law, Joshua, unwrapped the boat in Aransas Pass and got it ready to lift. Cam took photos of the preparations, and I stood by shivering in the frigid winds. The trucking crew from Sundance Services, father and son Raul and Raul Salinas, loaded and transported the boat and unloaded it on site. They were competent folks with an experienced hand and a cooperative friendly attitude. We drew a lot of stares on the ferry and as we pulled into the boat works. Our crew from Farley Boat Works was on hand to welcome this new big brother and help block and level it. T h i r t y - three years ago, Cam and I decided to one day build one of these Texas Schooners for Port Aransas. We are now very close to realizing that goal because of the strong teamwork of our great museum people. 'BUILDING' Cont. from Page 4 Once flipped, two more long rails, the gunwales, must be attached to the outer edge of the boat from the transom to the stem. These too are glued, screwed, and manhandled into place; they provide structural stability, something to grab onto, and the elegance of mahogany. Down the center of the floorboard a full length, 6-inch wide pine plank is attached to give more stability. A matching plank is mounted on the bottom and through-bolted to this one; it will absorb any punishment the local waters might dispense. Darrell Lynn likes to keep his shop fun in spite of the heat, so following lunch one day we had fried ice cream. While eating our encrusted honey dripped desert, Darrell asked, So who wants to go rowing? I think we need a break. Back at the shop, we loaded rowboats onto trailers and set out for the harbor. Joey and James Travis managed to navigate around the yachts, cruisers, and fishing boats while Darrell and Jim headed out to the ship channel. As the week wound down, we anticipated the weekend break. But even though we were off for two days, the best little boat building crew in Texas met up at a beach dive to hear one of our own take the stage. Denny Larkin will never be mistaken for Ted Nugent or Willie Nelson, but that night, playing guitar, singing, and wearing a Hawaiian shirt, he was the Farley Boat Works version of Jimmy Buffet. In Port Aransas you can be anything you want Son of a son, son of a gun, son of a son of a sailor. Next installment - customizing our Texas skiff. Page 6 PAPHA Newsletter December 2013

The Grand PooBah of the Directorate of Archiving for the Port Aransas Museum needs a volunteer or two. There is no need to like the company of people, and the job can be done in night clothes and a stocking cap if desired. The project is to transcribe oral interviews by playing a DVD of the interview on your home computer and typing the words. It is tedious, mind-numbing work and generally thankless until someone uses the finished product to answer a question or solve a mystery. Then it is all worthwhile and who knows, they might submit your name for Citizen of the Year! By dialing the secret number you can access the domain of the Grand PooBah.
