WILDERNESS 2017 EST: 1973 Adventures CELEBRATING OUR 45 TH SEASON / 25,000 ALUMNI

Welcome As a young man years ago, my life was profoundly and positively changed by my Wilderness Adventures experience. Before my adventure, I had never experienced life in the outdoors or lived with a group of my peers. Everything about my trip was new and full of opportunity. The beauty of the environment, the challenges of the journey, the support of my trip leaders, and the friendships I formed, came together for a perfect summer of fun and personal growth. With years to reflect on the experience, my wife, Catherine, and I are proud that Wilderness Adventures continues to operate with the goal of offering that same experience to all of our participants. As parents and educators who have worked with many summer youth programs around the country, we recognize the vital importance of programs like Wilderness Adventures in today s world. Free from electronics and the pressures of young adulthood, our students strengthen their sense of self and return from the journey with a new feeling of confidence. In each of our programs, we strive to plan the best possible adventures with the most supportive and well-trained role models as our guides. We take into account each aspect of the trip as we plan for the summer including the student and their parents experience. It is this attention to the whole summer experience that has come to define Wilderness Adventures for the past 44 years and will continue to do so in the future. For Catherine, me, and thousands of other Wilderness Adventures alumni around the world, this experience has served as a launch pad for life. On our trips, we demonstrate what success feels like for a student and it is our hope that each student uses their experiences with us as a foundation of success for years to come. We look forward to welcoming you into the Wilderness Adventures family this upcoming summer, Tom and Catherine Owners and Directors

history wilderness Adventures started in 1973 with Mike and Helen Cottingham s dream of combining their love of the outdoors with their passion for education. What began as one trip with ten students for eight weeks across the western United States has grown to over 45 trips across six continents with over 25,000 alumni. As idealistic school teachers, Mike and Helen saw great possibility for growth in their students, but a lack of room to grow in the traditional classroom setting. With the trust of ten students parents and a whole lot of enthusiasm, Mike and Helen packed up Wilderness Adventures first 15-passenger van and set out across the country. Each summer following, the trips grew, the staff multiplied, and Mike and Helen devoted themselves to helping young people discover the outdoors, and in turn, themselves. Forty-five years later, Mike and Helen s dream continues to prosper and thrive. Though the trips have grown to include much more than just ten students in the American West, our goals and mission have remained the same: to create lifechanging adventures for young people in remarkable locations. In early 2016, Mike and Helen passed the torch to Tom and Catherine Holland. With both history in the Jackson Hole area and extensive professional careers in child development, Tom and Catherine are thrilled to continue the legacy of Wilderness Adventures! 2

our Philosophy the Wilderness Adventures program is based on four core values. We are educational, we are forward-thinking, we are a launch pad, and we are fun! Wilderness Adventures is Educational. We are not a traditional classroom, but our programs teach invaluable character education. In the development of a child, it is moments like ours where true personal growth can happen, where the following conditions exist: Typical comfort zone boundaries shift (parents are not around, electronic devices are not available, removed from a common setting such as school or home) Carefully selected role models guide and advise each child as their trip leaders The experiences offered present our young adult participants with a chance to take risks in a controlled environment Learning and education happen continuously, moment to moment, during activities and throughout a journey that is fun and adventurous Wilderness Adventures is Forward-Thinking. As we continuously think about how Wilderness Adventures impacts the life of a child and how that impact will play out in their life forever, we think towards the future. We believe that our teaching style, our adventures, and our role models will continue to guide and have an impact on each of our students throughout their lives. Wilderness Adventures is a Launch Pad. We are not the pinnacle. We are an important step along the journey. This step will teach our students how to pursue a life of fulfillment one where the journey is just as important as the destination. Wilderness Adventures is Fun. Our programs are developed with the enjoyment and satisfaction of our participants in mind. They will be challenged in amazing environments that are fun in every way, and new friendships will be a critical outcome of each adventure. No formal test to judge knowledge acquisition the test is the journey itself 3

Why wilderness adventures? The WA DifFerence + Outcomes What if today s youth were only allowed a chance to learn and grow in a traditional classroom? What if they were forever linked to their electronic devices? What if they were never given the opportunity to play, discover, and be inspired in their natural environment? What if children and young adults were never taught to dream big? These questions motivate us each day at Wilderness Adventures. With a leadership team that has unparalleled camp and youth development experience, we work to put the very best practices of experiential education into each of our programs. At Wilderness Adventures we believe our mission is essential. We are committed to the belief that great learning and growth can happen in young adults outside a classroom, in a setting with thoughtful leaders, born in wild areas, and free of electronic devices. We believe our program serves as an important educational step for youth, one where they are challenged to think outside the box in an environment which demands that we all dream big. We exist to create amazing experiences that serve as building blocks for brighter tomorrows. 4

leadership education Leadership education is a core element of each of our trips. I remember on my trip as a teenager with Wilderness Adventures feeling a sense of leadership like I had never felt before. Now, more than ever, kids need opportunities to lead and feel what it s like to take on leadership roles. Consequently, we do not emphasize some of our trips providing more leadership education than others as this is the foundation of all of our programs. - Tom Holland, Director While the beauty of the scenery and the excitement of the activities are critical to each of our programs, it is the combination of these elements with leadership education that make each trip an exceptional learning experience. When students are having the time of their lives, they may not even realize that they are learning and growing in new and exciting ways. Our commitment to leadership education comes from the need that young adults have to expand their leadership skills so they are prepared for all of their adventures; not just their Wilderness Adventures. On every trip, students are provided age appropriate opportunities to expand their leadership skills. We emphasize group collaboration, creative and critical thinking, and effective communication as students take on duties as leader of the day or even as they make decisions as a group. This formula has been developed by educators and has been an effective means of growing leaders for 45 years. 5

leadership team our team represents an unprecedented number of years of experience in the camp industry. Having attended camps all over the country ourselves, as well as having been students on Wilderness Adventures trips, camp is our lifelong passion. At some point in our lives, Wilderness Adventures transformed us, and so we are devoted to creating and sharing that same experience with others. You will not find a more experienced and passionate team behind the scenes of your child s adventure anywhere else. As a team, we have traveled to well over 100 countries and rafted and fished more rivers than one can count. We know the power of adventuring because we ve been there: to the top of the Grand Teton and Mt. Rainier, the Serengeti of East Africa, the rivers of Montana, and the beaches of Spain. Our love of these places and these experiences runs deep. Our experience is exceeded only by our promise and commitment to providing you and your child with the adventure of a lifetime. 6

our leaders our leaders combine a dedication to working with today s youth with an unmatched enthusiasm for the outdoors. They are the key to success on each WA program, providing a platform for students to experience, grow, and develop. Wilderness Adventures leaders are thoughtful, caring, patient, and knowledgeable. They are passionate outdoor adventurers and travelers, impeccable role models, and charismatic and dynamic adults. Their dedication to the growth of each student is the principal reason for our success. And let s not forget they are a ton of fun! 7

our students the Wilderness Adventures student is...excited to learn, to be challenged, to meet new people, and to adventure in the world s most beautiful, magnificent locations. They are eager to be part of a team: to create a small community that will solve problems as a group, experience new places, and conquer new challenges together. WA students are kind and supportive team players. They are also thrilled to learn to cook paella in southern Spain, fly fish Montana s blue-ribbon trout waters, and summit majestic Mt. Rainier. Arriving at the beginning of the adventure from all over the country and even the rest of the world, WA students start their trip knowing that every day is going to be exciting. Our students arrive as promising young adults, and leave more confident and capable leaders. Wilderness Adventures students experience life-changing growth, excitement, and fun! 8
