2 ERC HISTORY SOUGHT By Mary Ann MacLarenr The rough draft of the history of Ecorse Rowing Club has been compiled by the historian for the City of Ecorse, Kathy Covert. She and I reviewed all the archive materials that the club has in storage recently. We had some original photographers the are needed for the book. Kathy is still editing the book and adding new information and photos as they become available. If you have any historical artifacts to share please contact me at maryann@maclareninc.com or by phone at (734) All items will be returned. It is a delight to visit with Kathy and hear all the stories and see the scrape books and photos that many of our old timers have contributed. US STEEL DONATIONS US Steel made a generous donation of $250 for the ERC Ecorse High School Rowing program. The money was used to purchase rowing shorts for the high school crew. US Steel has also provided indoor storage for ERC s 8s for the winter season. Last year s winter weather took a toll on equipment, which was stored outside in the elements. The generosity of US Steel will enable ERC to preserve the equipment for programs such as our high school program. 3 EHS INDOOR ROWING For the first time ever, students at Ecorse High School participated in an after-school indoor rowing program. In November, Mary Ann MacLaren and Chris Nestor moved ERC s eight ergs to EHS. Stan Childress, EHS principal helped unload the ergs and coordinate the high school indoor rowing program. Mary Ann and Chris volunteered their time to teach EHS students how to erg. A room was set up at the high school for the program. As a result, several of the students participated in local erg races. The ergs were returned to the boathouse at the commencement of water practice for the high school. ERC EXPERIENCES MADNESS, THEN SPRINTS TO THE ISLAND By Chris Nestor Why would anyone drive an hour, sit around for 3 hours, and pay $15 for the chance to spend 7 to 8 minutes working to the point of exhaustion. Well, it is late winter, you re a rower, and the erg races are in town. What else is there to do? Saturday, February 25, the Friends of Detroit Rowing sponsored Motown Madness an indoor rowing regatta. We had 3 members of the Ecorse Rowing Club participating. Two of them were from Ecorse High School, members of the newly formed Ecorse High School Crew (EHSC). They were able to be a part of this event due to the generosity of rowers and nonrowers who made cash contributions toward the entry fees. Wayde Worley, who is also helping train the high school crew, was there to race, too. Timothy and Anthony Teeters are 16 year old twins. They were picked up by Mary Ann MacLaren and Chris Nestor, in the cold morning dark at 6:30 am. The drive to the Winter Garden Atrium at the Renaissance Center was quiet because no one was really awake yet. After registration was completed, and a desperate search for coffee by Chris was successful, the wait for race time began. Mary Ann & Chris were wearing the yellow club t-shirts. All the other high school teams were wearing their uniforms. Timothy made the comment, that it would be nice to have shirts in order to feel more like a team. This made a prefect opportunity to present Timothy & Anthony with Ecorse Club rowing shorts and shirts. U S Steel s contribution made the presentation possible. Anthony & Timothy Teeters, Coach Mary Ann MacLaren, and Wade Worley As their heat neared, Timothy & Anthony were shown the details of indoor racing. In particular, how the starts are handled. Race strategy was discussed with the coaches. They took their seats and the race began. A few minutes later, they had done something no one else in their high school had done. Successfully completed an indoor erg race. We were all proud. The drive home was a little livelier. Frequent moans were heard from the back seat. Despite last week s complaints of exhaustion and pain, Timothy & EHS Crew Members Anthony Teeters & Joe Cox (yellow shirts). Anthony showed up the next weekend Saturday, March 4, to participate in the Island Sprints being held on Grosse Ile. They were joined by Joe Cox, 15. Mary Ann and Chris provided transportation and coaching. Wayde was there to race and to provide support to the high school crew. Joe had participated in the fall high school rowing, so he already had his t-shirt. He was given shorts, again, made possible by U S Steel. A fine performance was given by all 4 racers. I m sorry Wayde I don t have your times, but I known you made a respectable showing in your class in both races.
