1 ECORSE ROWING CLUB 4700 W. Jefferson Ecorse, MI (313) July 2005 Ecorse Rowing Club is a facility dedicated to the City of Ecorse and its surrounding communities providing recreation, exercise, commitment, and competition through the sport of rowing. PRESIDENT S LETTER Thank you to club members and their families for their participation in two recent ERC events the June 4 th ERC clean up and the June 5 th Wyandotte Yacht Club (WYC) Blessing of the Fleet and ERC boat naming ceremony. Members have also been actively recruiting new members for the club. Volunteers are still needed to participate in the monthly Greenway meetings hosted by the City of Ecorse. Meetings are usually held on the second Thursday of each month at 4 p.m. Notice of meetings for the remainder of 2005 will be forwarded to ERC members by . John Fletcher ERC President LEARN-TO-ROW DAY By Mary Ann MacLaren Ecorse Rowing Club held an open house on Saturday, June 11, in conjunction with the US Rowing Association National Learn to Row Day. Guests were given a tour of the facility, a viewing of a tape from the 2004 Olympic rowing events, refreshments, a t-shirt and beverage can cozies, and an opportunity to row on the water. Fifteen people tried rowing with three signing up on the spot for the learn-to-row session that started Tuesday, June 14. Experienced rowers made up half the boat, while our guests filled the rest of the seats. Bob Jarosz, along with several others, instructed them on how to row. Bob was the coxie of the day. The Rawson (8+) made two trips out of the Ecorse Creek, into the Detroit River, and up to Mud Island before that ol East Southeast wind picked up. Portions of the row had all eight rowing together. After the wind picked up, the rowing continued with the Ballheim (4+) rowing up and down the creek from the railroad bridge to the mouth. Everyone attending the open house had a chance to row. Several guests also rode in the safety launch with coach Mary Ann MacLaren to get a different view of rowing. Many club members made this a successful open house and learn-torow day a BIG thanks to all! Members assisting at Learn-to-row Day: Phil Bozenski Tim Cardanha John Fletcher Julia Garris Jeff Gilliland Jerry Glotfelty Bob & Elsa Jarosz Paula Labadie Mary Ann MacLaren Manuel Pumarada Lisa Redick Bob Rudowski Gerti Schrattenthaler ROWING COMMITTEE UPDATE By Bob Powell Happy rowing season to everyone at the club! This early heat wave makes me want to get out on the water as much as possible. Plus, with the sun rising so early and staying up late into the evening, we are not required to have lights on the boats. But, that doesn t mean we should be letting our guard down while getting in a workout. All along the Detroit River there are a number of fishermen who are hoping to catch walleye. While they are jigging, they probably aren t paying attention to oncoming rowing shells. So, please be sure and keep your distance from the boats and their fishing lines. Lastly, don t forget to log in and out on the logbook when you are out on the water. Thanks to everyone who is logging their meters on the Concept 2 website and lists their club affiliation with the Ecorse Rowing Club. Last year, Don Treadwell logged over a million meters and it would be great if more members did that this year. If you have a StrokeCoach in your boat, you can record those meters on the website as an ON WATER workout. If you need any help setting up your profile on the website, just write me at siteasy@yahoo.com. We are continuing to look for a fiberglass heavyweight double for club usage. We have a couple of leads on some boats and hope to have more to report in the next newsletter.
2 BOAT NAMING CEREMONY On Sunday, June 5, ERC members joined our friends and neighbors at the Wyandotte Yacht Club (WYC) for a dual event: the Blessing of the Fleet and Boat Naming Ceremony. The weather cooperated and further blessed this memorable day. Two boats were christened. A Kashper Bio-rig 4+, now named Cliff Ballheim; and a double, now named Andy Posa. Cliff Ballheim was a member of the successful ERC crew of the late 1940s. For several days after receiving the invitation to the christening, Cliff told everyone that walked through his door a boat was being named after him saying, I didn t think I would live to see a boat named for me. Cliff was very touched by the honor and even had a tear in his eye during the christening, which was attended by members of his family. Cliff s nephew, Timothy Pollack, had coxed this same 4+ last season. Andy Posa was a member and recreational rower. Andy became involved in rowing after his sons rowed for the Grosse Ile crew out of ERC. Andy passed away last March. His family expressed their gratitude for the honor of a boat named for him. As part of the WYC Blessing of the Fleet ceremony, wreaths were tossed into the Detroit River in memory of Andy Posa and Derek McKenzie. Derek was a long-time ERC member, coach, and boatman. His wife Jean tossed a floral wreath in his memory. Thanks to Bob and Elsa Jarosz, dual members of ERC and WYC, for initiating ERC participation in WYC s long-standing tradition. Thanks also to our neighbors at WYC for welcoming us into their ceremony. SUMMER SOLSTICE CHALLENGE From Concept 2 Summer weather has come to Vermont, after a very cool, rainy Spring. Some of us are now rowing on the water, while others of us are still content to row in the cool indoor shade of the Concept2 workout room. Whether you row on the water or off, we hope that each of you is settling into a healthy summer exercise routine that includes rowing. Here s a challenge that will help you kick off your summer rowing program: The 2 nd Annual Summer Solstice Challenge will take place on June 21, the longest day of the year. We challenge you to celebrate the longest day by rowing a total of 21,000 meters. You may row it in one sitting or several, and the meters for this challenge may be rowed on the water or on the Indoor Rower. If you do the row all in one sitting, you may just as well row an additional 97 meters to make it an official half-marathon of 21,097 meters. Once you enter your meters in your Online Logbook you will be able to download a special certificate and your name will be included on the 2005 Summer Solstice Row Honor Board. More details can be found at concept2.com ( ng/motivation/challenges_ind.asp). Note: We were recently reminded that in the southern hemisphere, this event is really a Winter Solstice Challenge! With this in mind, we will offer two choices of downloadable certificates for those who complete this challenge: one for summer and one for winter. Looking Ahead: The next challenge will be the Blue Moon Row on August 19. COMMON DENOMINATOR By Paula Labadie A well-functioning volunteer organization requires that the sum of its parts be greater than 50% to enable survival. Each member is a fraction of, but critical integer to, that functioning unit. On Saturday, June 4, we had a number of these critical integers helping spruce up the boathouse, equipment, and dock for the season. We even enjoyed breakfast on the patio to get us going after a precleaning row. Thanks to Julia Garris, Beth Kusisto, Tim The Thumb Cardanha, Lisa Redick, Mary Ann MacLaren, John Fletcher, Manuel Pumarada, Sharon Dmochowski, Christine Nestor, Jim Rocktoff, Bill Watt, Michael and Matthew Raisky, Carol Gaffke, Paula Labadie, and Ann VanBoxell. Former member and now Californian, Sheri McEachren, also joined us. A fair amount of work was accomplished, but many more hours are needed to clean and check the club s assets the shells and coach s launch. Mechanicallyoriented members are desperately needed to pitch in and maintain this equipment. Even an hour of your time after work or on the weekend would add to the sum total of our corporate ERC membership. ERC BOARD MEETING The ERC Board meets on the second Wednesday of the month at 7:15 p.m.
3 CAM WERY By Mary Ann MacLaren Cam Wery, a long-time member of the Ecorse Rowing Club and husband of Jean Wery (past president of ERC), passed away on Sunday, May 29. He was in the class of 1943 and a member of the crew that won the Canadian Schoolboy. Soon after, Cam and the rest of the crew went into the service. In 1946, he returned to rowing. Cam was coached by the legendary Jim Rice and rowed on the heavyweight crew consisting of Bob Vollamar, Harold Covart, Walt Pooley, Jim Hill, George and Gus Papas, Bob White, and coxswain John Whitefield. In addition to being an ERC crew member, Cam was active in the club during the 50s and 60s, including serving as a board member. He has been a long-time supporter of the Ecorse Rowing Club. SUPPORT ROW2K From RowingMasters@Yahoo Group We all appreciate the tremendous service Row2k provides all of us in rowing. We want a calendar of events or results or the news, that's where we go. Row 2k is not a corporation or even a staff of many. It is one person Ed Hewitt. He does not charge for his services. We all go to Row2k for free. But, Ed needs our support in the way of financial help. If EACH rower sent in just $10, it would help a lot. If we all start sending in a little bit (or MORE which is even better) he can survive. This is our grassroots-rowing wave. Start it and pass it on. Spread the Word. Tell your friends, your club, and your school. Send a donation. Now please. Go to Row2k site and there is a way to donate. Let's show Ed how much we appreciate ALL that he does, ceaselessly. Thank you all. 4 DO THESE GENES MAKE ME LOOK FAT? By Phil Bozenski Spare me with your my parents were big boned or it runs in my family. How s everyone s heart rate doing? I m following upon my first article (that would be two months now) on your heart rate workouts. Anyone rowing at least three days a week? If not, at least walking? We re heading well into the season now and it s time to take our health (and rowing) a little more serious. Remember, a moderate heart rate (definition of moderate = being able to carry on a discussion while being active). Rowing covers every available use of all muscles, as well as a great cardiovascular workout. So why is the log book empty? Guess what? I don t have time either. All active rowing members should make full use of what ERC has to offer you paid for it. Let s get those hearts pumping, believe me, you ll feel better and any excess weight will slowly drop off. Don t forget - keep it easy and enjoyable. This pace keeps your heart burning FAT calories (the ones you want to get rid of). Anything more than a steady, comfortable pace and your body starts to look for other means of energy like muscle. Forty minutes a day (at least 4 days a week) is all you need to obtain a healthy cardiovascular system. More than 40 minutes and you re getting into endurance training. You don t need that right now baby steps, remember? The next 30 days should be taken more serious, yet relatively moderate, in terms of your workouts. It s hot; make sure you re well hydrated. Here s a challenge start drinking a ½ gallon of water per day for one week. Slowly build your endurance to a full gallon per day the second week. Since your body is not use to it, you ll find yourself going to the bathroom more than ever. However, your body will get used to it after that first week. If you re looking for a cure all, give it a try you ll be surprised. Keep the hearts working you stop working out your heart stops working, too. Remember, consult a physician, as I am not qualified to give health advise. My information is based on my own experience and 27 years of competitive rowing. And while on the water, keep it safe and keep it healthy. Please me at bozenski@comcast.net for any additional questions or rowingrelated concerns. NEWSLETTER DEADLINE Articles and information for newsletters are due by the second Wednesday of each month. Do you have an item of interest to share with fellow ERC members, equipment to sell, or committee news? How would you like to tell us about yourself how you got into rowing, where you erg, what your favorite workout is, etc.? Send information or articles to Ann VanBoxell by to avnbxl@aol.com or call (734) LOOKING FOR SOMETHING DIFFERENT TO DO? By Ann VanBoxell How about peddling instead of paddling? Log on to for a calendar of bicycle rides varying from one-day rides to weeklong rides. Links are also available to help you locate trails throughout the state. Looking for a challenge? How about riding across Lower Michigan on the Michigander Bicycle Tour? Trips vary from a weekend ride from Paw Paw to South Haven and back to 6- or 7- day trips across Michigan to Algonac. For additional information on the Michigander, visit FOURTH OF JULY PARADE By Chris Nestor Last year, ERC marched in the City of Ecorse s 4 th of July parade. Due to low audience attendance at the Ecorse parade, ERC has decided to participate in Wyandotte s 4 th of July parade. The parade will be held (not surprisingly) on the 4 th of July. Many politicians will be participating; therefore, it is important that ERC have a presence there also. Parade announcers will provide information about the club that could help populate our learnto-row program. The parade will begin at 10 a.m. and should be over by noon. We need volunteers. We are hoping to have a truck with a boat on top to accompany our group as we did last year. Please contact Chris Nestor at nestorc2@earthlink.net or (734) if you are willing to march, help out, lend a truck, or have any ideas to fancy up our part of the parade.
