1 FuLL StEAm AhEAd Hands On Deck Inc. is a nonprofit organization empowering youth and families to succeed together through experiential learning focused on the science and art of building wooden boats and the preservation of traditional skills. The AXE The axe has been used in conjunction with wood since metal was first forged. Thousands of years have given the human race perspective on how best to shape its head, handle, and bevels for any given task. At HOD we use axes in almost every class, and have extensively used an axe in our latest Mackinaw Boat build. We are able to keep the bits sharp, and adapt bevels to specific tasks and that makes this a go-to wood-splitting, facing, and shaping tool. It is faster to split a strait grained board with an axe, and use a jack plane to refine the edge; than it is to saw it. It is easier to see a rolling bevel take shape on a plank by employing a medium size single bevel axe. Also remember, a sharp tool is incredibly safe when proper technique is taught, and a cover is applied when not in use. Axes should be in every woodcrafters kit. If you have an old axe lying around the house or garage, bring it in to HOD for our Axe Tune Up special of $25. We ll cleanup the rust and put a superb edge on this trusty tool. We have provided over one hundred wooden boat building and traditional skill classes with the Boy Scouts, Green Bay Public School System, Brown County Public Library, Brown County PALS, and Victory Academy in Northern Wisconsin. The last two groups focus directly on assisting at-risk youth. Working with HOD enables these groups to greatly enhance their missions. People Process Project
2 MARY A SMALL MACKINAW ROWING BOAT In the late 1800 s J. W. Church designed and built several small Mackinaw rowing boats for use on the St. Mary s river that divides Sault Set. Marie. Dr. Church s boat yard was well known in the Great Lakes, and he likely built hundreds of boats, most of them Mackinaw boats, around the turn of the century. When HOD was looking for a medium sized stable rowing boat, Rodger Swanson presented this design that had been hiding in a dusty journal for 150 years. With help from Jamestown Distributers and Bay Ridge Plywood we were able to secure the materials for an updated low maintenance design that met all of our criteria. MARY is over 17 feet long with a beam around 5 feet. She can service 3 rowing stations, and up to 4-5 passengers depending on size and weight. She has a flat keel that keeps her upright when beached, and ASH scantlings to give her years of service for a youth based organization. MARY has been constructed in her entirety by trained shipwright Mark Bilhorn, and he has constructed her in excellence stem to stern. With help from our mentors, and other shipwrights at HOD she will serve us well.

5 SLOYD WOOD CRAFTING Once prolific in human culture, the idea of making our items that we use in every day life is almost lost. SLOYD education teaches these ideas in a systematic and creative way. The axe and a knife is all that is needed to make beautiful hand crafts from fresh cut trees like a White Birch, Aspen, or Ash. We cover tool selection, safe practices, maintenance, and sharpening. These tools can turn fresh cut firewood into eating utensils, storage containers, and many more practical handicrafts. The bark can be woven and folded to make baskets or knife sheaths, and even a bark canoe. $45 Hr. For One To One Private Class (2 hr. Min.) or $20 Hr. Per Student For A Group Class (2 hr./2 student min w/ 4 student max.)
