1 Lancashire Year 2 Athletic Activities Core Task Key Stage 1 Colour Match Core Task The Colour match core task involves children throwing different pieces of equipment as accurately as possible in order to hit targets. The children work in groups of three and take it in turns to be the thrower, scorer and collector. Each group has three different-coloured targets (eg hoops, skipping ropes or markers) set at different distances and selects 10 pieces of equipment (eg quoits, balls of different sizes, beanbags) in colours to match the targets. The thrower tries to throw each object to the target of the same colour (eg red beanbag to red hoop). The scorer counts how many times the thrower succeeds in hitting the target. The collector gathers up the equipment ready for the next person to have a go. Each child has two turns at being the thrower. N.C 2014 National Curriculum Pupils should develop fundamental movement skills, become increasingly competent and confident and access a broad range of opportunities to extend their agility, balance and coordination, individually and with others. Pupils should be taught to: master basic movements including running, jumping, throwing and catching, as well as developing balance, agility and coordination, and begin to apply these in a range of activities participate in team games, developing simple tactics for attacking and defending perform dances using simple movement patterns. 2 Date Term Class Progression 1 Learning Objective To explore different ways of throwing equipment Warm Up Play Statues ask the children to travel around the area and on teachers command of STOP, children to make a capital letter shape with their body. Start with running then try different ways of travelling i.e. hopping, skipping, jumping etc Tasks Teaching Points Success Criteria Set up Collect a bean bag and let all the class try the activity in groups. Encourage children to bend their legs when picking up the bean bag rather than their back. Use STEP if needed. Model for the children how to throw underarm and ask the children what do they think they will have to do differently when throwing for distance to throwing for accuracy? Split the children into groups and set up 3 stations. Station 1 Can you throw further underarm than you can run in 3 seconds or jump in 5 jumps B Child A throws three beanbags A Child B moves to furthest beanbag and times child A running for 3 sec B A Collect a bean bag In teams of 4/5, set up 2 hoops Xm apart with 4/5 beanbags in the far hoop. Child 1 runs to pick up a bean bag from the hoop and places it in the hoop at the start and then the next child goes. Repeat putting the bean bags back in the far hoop. Station 1 Working in pairs. one child has three beanbags and throws them as far as possible. Their partner moves to the furthest bean bag. Starts their partner running by saying get set, GO and times for three seconds then shouts STOP. They check to see if they passed them Running Head facing forward Elbows bent Run on balls of feet High knee lift Underhand throw Face direction of the throw Step forward with opposite foot to throwing hand Follow through with arm fingers pointing at the target

3 Station 2 Collect a bean bag and feed the animals Challenge is there a difference if you throw underarm from kneeling? Can you repeat but using your other arm to throw with? Station 3 Bees and Animals Run and collect two beanbags from a hoop Throw the beanbags into the hoops (one in each) Challenge is there a difference if you throw underarm from kneeling? Can you repeat but using your other arm to throw with? Children to swap over stations after X mins. Use STEP to adapt the activities so the children achieve success. when they say STOP. Change over roles Repeat with jumping instead of running. Station 2 - Animals In groups the children run to the hoop and collect two beanbags. Move to the throwing line and throw the beanbag at a target on a wall or through a hoop. Collect beanbags and return to hoop and start again. Station 3 Bees In groups the children run to the hoop and collect two beanbags. Ask the children to jog around the area away from the cones. C A B D Variations - can use a quoit instead of a beanbag. Challenge - can you carry the equipment (beanbag/quoit) on your head and pass to next child? Can you carry it on your shoulder or under your chin? Split the children into groups and set up 3 stations. Station 1 obstacle race Set up a simple obstacle course to include running and jumping. Start by running in and out of the cones, sprint to far cone, jump side to side down the rope, jump two feet to two feet into and out of hoops run to mini hurdle or cones before returning to start. Pass the beanbag Child A runs as fast as they can carrying a beanbag as a baton. Child A passes the beanbag to child B who runs to Child C who runs to child D etc Station 1 obstacle race Explain to the children the different parts of the obstacle course. Ask the children to complete the course as quickly as possible. 9 Station 2 Slide the bag In pairs facing each other between 5 and 10M How close can you get to your partners legs? What do you have to think about when you throw the beanbag? Station 2 slide the beanbag One child uses an underarm throw to slide the beanbag so it stops between their partners legs. Partner returns the beanbag by sliding it back using an underarm throw. Ask the children to alter the distance between them i.e. closer, further away Station 3 In groups of four set up a triangle using cones/markers. Child A throw overarm to child B and runs to follow it. Child B throws underarm to Child C and runs to follow it. Child D throws overarm to Child A and continues until all children are back at original starting positions. Once the last piece has been thrown the rest of the team run and collect as many pieces as they can and return them to the hoop. Change over roles so each child has a turn as the thrower Station 3 Use the same colour beanbags for each team. Each team takes it in turn to throw underhand into the grid square.
