3 DBNSW CHAIR S REPORT On behalf of my fellow board members, it is my pleasure to report on the many and varied activities of Dragon Boats NSW. After 6 years on the DBNSW Board of Directors, I am retiring and leaving the role to be filled, I have no doubt, by fresh faces with fresh ideas. Last year at our AGM we came up short on nominees for Board positions. I m happy to say that after further searching Amanda Hioe and Stephanie Vounou joined the Board and have been worthy additions. Our Strategic Plan is now more or less complete with an in-depth club survey finished. Feedback on the survey to all our clubs will be completed at the AGM, and already the Board is considering many of the important priorities requested. We did well at the Australian Championships State v State Day taking the Peter Bristow trophy for the winning State. Congratulations to all our State teams who worked and trained so hard for the events. It has to be said though, that the State v State competition needs to be reviewed by AusDBF if it is to have real relevance in the future. Bank Street, our centre for Sydney and many Metro clubs continues to be an ongoing challenge particularly so with a new pleasure craft and ferry marina likely to be developed adjacent to our current base. We continue to hold ongoing meetings with both Urban Growth and RMS and their attitude to our ongoing tenure has and continues However, in reply to the DA submission we have forwarded a document that outlines our real concerns on boat safety and ongoing access for dragon boats around the new marina. We have had a very successful regatta year and have managed to cement SIRC as the regular base for our regattas. There is no better venue, but no event goes ahead without the tireless help from our volunteers and officials, amongst whom I am privileged to include myself. A very big thank you to you all. The Board has been very busy over the past weeks searching for a replacement for our current CEO, Glenn Tasker. Glenn is retiring after the AGM and I d like to personally thank him for his invaluable help and the benefit of his experience during his all too brief stay with us. I m sure that his replacement will be a worthy occupant of the position, ready to grow and develop our sport over future years. Finally to my fellow Board Directors, my sincere thanks for your ongoing help, support and hard work over the past year. It s been exciting, challenging but always immensely enjoyable. I wish you and all our members every success for the future. Geoff Roberts Michael McDonald with Chair Geoff Roberts at Chinese New Year DRAGON BOATS NSW INC. ANNUAL REPORT DRAGON BOATS NSW INC. 4 CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER S REPORT As I sit down to write my second report for the Members, I have been thinking of the many and varied tasks Dragon Boats NSW performs over a twelve month period. The year has been no different. Our clubs have had successful racing seasons, culminating in a great Australian Championships, hosted by Dragon Boats Victoria in Albury-Wodonga on the NSW-Victorian border. Despite the weather, the Championships were well run on a picturesque course. The Australian Dragon Boat Federation and DBV deserved the Members congratulations on a fantastic event. No doubt the economic benefit to the Albury- Wodonga region would be well worth the local government s expenditure on the Championships. Finance During the year, the former Finance Director recommended to the DBNSW board that the financial reporting to the board should be done by management rather than a volunteer Director. This year each monthly financial report to the board has been prepared by management. Also the audited financial report, which is attached to this annual report was completed by management and signed-off by the board. The report shows a surplus of $89,000, which is some $73,000 better than the approved budget. This result has been achieved by careful planning and expenditure. Early in the financial year, the DBNSW board made a decision to purchase a new racing fleet for its regattas. The cost of that fleet was budgeted at more than $120,000. Knowing this large purchase would happen in the second half of the year, management reviewed expenditure and made savings in order to cover these costs. The new fleet was purchased from AusDBF and Members will be using them in the racing season. On behalf of the Members, I want to thank our part-time accounts officer, Denise Rogers, for her diligent work. I want to also thank our auditors, Pitcher Partners for the work on our audit and the preparation of the accounts, which will be tabled at the annual meeting. Events The most important connection between DBNSW and its Members is competitions and events. The year has been no different. Our Events Co-Ordinator Ramsay Cobb is now two and half years into his role and has delivered eight regattas and a state championship during the past year. Ramsay works extremely hard for the organisation and I thank him for that work. The Regatta Series and State Championships were characterized by fierce racing and on-time delivery. During the period, Ramsay has also assisted regional clubs with their regattas. Bank Street The past year has seen little change at the Bank Street headquarters. The revolving door nature of some of the state government authorities means little has happened from a development point of view at Bank Street. Although it has occurred after the 30 June, there has been a push by Urban Growth and RMS to develop the land adjacent to our Bank Street Licenced Area. Currently, Bank Street Clubs and DBNSW have lodged their concerns about this development application as it poses a potential safety risk to our clubs and paddlers. During the past twelve months, efforts have been made to identify other potential sites around Sydney Harbour for a Dragon Boats headquarters. Unfortunately, there has been little response from existing facilities and state government authorities. DBNSW through its Bank Street Co-Ordinator, Mal Wills, has only been able to provide basic facilities for Bank Street paddlers. On behalf of Members, I want to thank Mal for his efforts in keeping Bank Street neat and tidy under trying conditions. All Members know Mal s dedication to the sport. It goes beyond Bank Street and boat repairs. I want to personally thank Mal for his advice and support during this period. DRAGON BOATS NSW INC. ANNUAL REPORT

5 DBNSW Supporters It is also important that DBNSW thanks our friends and supporters. Firstly, the NSW Minister for Sport and his officers in the Office of Sport continue to support our office in Sports House. Over the year, some Members have come to Sports House for meetings and they have seen the quality of the spaces and facilities available for our offices. The Minister and the Office of Sport have also provided monetary grants to support our programs; these total $22,500 in On behalf of the members, I thank the Minister and his CEO Matt Miller for this support. Thanks also goes to Clare Green and Jeff Slatter, from the Office of Sport for their assistance. DBNSW is most grateful for the support it gets from the City of Sydney Council, Regatta Sport (Canada), TransCrane, Elite Merchandise, RMS and Urban Growth. These partners contribute to the success of our regattas during the racing season. Thank you to AusDBF for their efforts in providing national championships and programs for our members. AusDBF has had a year of change in It was our first in the national insurance scheme, which delivered cheaper insurance for clubs. Such national schemes are common with other sports around Australia. My final acknowledgement goes to our 60 clubs and their 3,180 individual members, who make up DBNSW. They supply volunteers to ensure regattas are staffed correctly. They make substantial contributions to training, competitive and social needs of their paddlers. As I leave DBNSW at the annual meeting, I am sure the sport is in good hands. I wish all those paddlers I have met and those whom I did not, every success with your chosen sport. 11 REGION COORDINATORS REPORTS Northern Region From frozen dams and meandering waterways to fast flowing big rivers, the NSW North has something for every dragon boat paddler! This year our clubs have supported establishing clubs with boat and equipment donations. We have been fortunate to receive grants enabling the growing of our sport and participated in representative teams and returning to NSW with Gold! Northern NSW Clubs continue to be tireless in their recruitment of members and participation at regatta events across the State, Country and even Internationally. Many of our Northern paddlers joined together to demonstrate our talents in recently held Master s Games and have also joined as one to compete at SIRC as the Northern Waratahs. At all events our representatives have returned with bling which is a great task as often paddlers are meeting each other for the first time at boat loading! Port Macquarie and Lismore were both chosen as locations to undertake MPIO training, and over 26 club members came together to undertake this valuable training. We have also been fortunate to have regular sweep workshops, officials mentoring and very recently the announcement that the NSW held Level 2 Coaching Course would be conducted first in Port Macquarie. Northern NSW, again under the coach management team of David Pees and Andrew and Kim Blundell competed against Western and Southern NSW at the State Titles. The hard work and training paid off with the team winning all 3 divisions and claiming GOLD yet again. The success of this team was built on for the National Titles held in Albury-Wodonga. A team representing the entire Regional NSW was established, and training undertaken in Port Macquarie. Some members travelled over 700km each way just to get to there which highlights the commitment and passion of our paddlers. The training worked and we returned with another 3 Gold medals! As varied as their locations, our clubs each offer different experiences for not only visiting paddlers but their own teams. This year clubs have undertaken intensive camps, being a mix of paddle training, guest coaches and specific expert speakers from sport and nutrition backgrounds. Clubs are determined to grow our sport in Northern NSW, a location where the weather allows a huge variety of options for potential paddlers. Our strength lies in our Senior B teams, with greatest numbers in Senior C. The Northerners do though have dedicated teams who actively pursue and support our Juniors, Prems and A s and these folk are worth their weight in GOLD! All of our 16 clubs remain very active and very supportive of Dragon Boating in NSW. It is a pleasure to be part of a great group of people whose volunteer hours match their passion for our sport. I am very proud to be part of a great group of people but this year hand over the reins of the Northern Region Coordinator to someone else who can bring new ideas to the position. A huge thank you to all those who have supported me in this role, and to DBNSW for your ongoing advancements in sport administration and governance. 12 Southern Region has been a paddle packed year for the Southern Region. All the clubs are very active and paddled year round. It was great to see so many clubs attend the Jindabyne Flowing Festival which was well supported by Southern Region clubs and clubs from afar like Albury/Wodonga and Orange. It is great to see the regional teams travel great distances to join into regional regattas. Merimbula Water Dragons and several other Southern Region clubs also travelled to Albury/ Wodonga to compete in their annual regatta. This regatta is always lots of fun with a great atmosphere and paddlers always feel very welcome. Many southern Region clubs have attended several regattas as The Southern Warriors which has been a combination of the southern region clubs who have been unable to field a team in their own right. This still gives them the opportunity to compete in a competitive manner at regattas. The Southern Warriors competed at Sydney, Canberra, Moruya, Jindabyne and Albury/Wodoanga. Sussex Inlet River Dragons welcomed a new 20 seat boat to its fleet in March and had a blessing ceremony. Sussex Inlet River Dragons has a growing membership of paddling and social members. Newly formed Merimbula Water Dragons had a great year and attended many regattas as well as hosting the very popular Mallacoota Marathon. This year saw 80 paddlers from clubs in NSW and VIC paddle down the pristine water ways of northern Victoria with fun activities along the way. MWD had several members who were selected to represent the Southern Region in the State Championships. Nature Coast celebrated its 10 year anniversary earlier this year. They have a healthy membership and two of their members were selected to paddle in the World Masters games which was held in Auckland. Nature Coast is very proud to have had one of its members selected to represent Australia as part of the Auroras teams. As this is my last year in this position I would like to take the opportunity to thank all the clubs I have been involved with in the Southern Region. All the clubs are very welcoming and friendly and it has been a pleasure to represent them over the past 6 years. I look forward to seeing them around! 13 Western Region Eight incredibly active clubs, meeting challenges, having lot of fun, enjoying success a plenty. Challenges overcome: floods, underwater hazards, blue green algae, cold weather. Training: The challenges impacted on summer training. Winter training on water has continued for most clubs (are we getting tougher or is it warmer winter temps?). Some clubs have added alternative training ie poolside paddling in Orange while Bathurst s weekly Walk in the Park has been taken over by Pan Dragons. Regattas: increasing number of regattas being attended. Smaller clubs combining or joining the Western Waratahs teams. The Kombos.(Outback Dragons with a couple ofher clubs thrown in) had great success in World Masters Games in Auckland Squad: with 5 clubs represented attended States and Nationals with success. Juniors: Pan Dragons, Caitlyn Waldron just missed selection for junior Auroras but a strong contender for the future. James Sheahan High School: it has taken 4 years, but a core group of paddlers is developing. A former student has joined senior club, and as L1 Coach will assist with school teams. Officials Training: last November saw the number of trained officials increase from 2 to 11. Officials/volunteers: at regattas - Increasing number of members are assisting at regattas. Coaches: most clubs now have at least one accredited Level 1 Coach. Pinnacle Dragons have one L 2. Wagga Regatta: Congratulations to Bidgee Dragons, who for first time ever ran their own regatta, A Great success! Central Western Regatta Planning Committee consisting of representatives from 7 western clubs, headed up by Kay Whitehall of Mudgee, are on track for staging an exciting day of racing on November 5 th. Social Activities Western clubs are getting together occasionally for social paddling. During winter, clubs in the eastern side of the region head west where it can be 10 degrees warmer. The Western Rouges at the 2017 State Championships In January all clubs descended on Orange for a fun day on the water, with some sweeps taking the helm of a 10 man boat (courtesy of Pinnacle Dragons) for the first time, and all clubs had their first taste of relay racing. The fun activities were followed by a very productive meeting of representatives of each club. May saw Forbes and Pinnacle Dragons among the 60 + paddlers in the Mallacoota Mad Marathon. Bidgee Dragons experienced paddling in Shanghai last September, and in June the Ord River Marathon. At time of writing Pinnacle Dragons with paddlers from Bidgee, Illawarra and Warnambool will be competing in the Hawaiian Dragon Boat Festival on 29 th July. Several Pan Dragons will be there in one of the 6 Australian teams competing. Outback Dragons are training hard for the Broome (WA) dragon boat festival. Future Official Training courses needed urgently, as growing number of clubs are seeing the need and benefit of having trained officials. Training for MPIOs needed, currently the possibility of Sport and Recreation running a course in the Western Region is being explored. 14 SWEEP COORDINATORS REPORTS Northern Region 1 When you look at a Position Title and or a Job Description, I believe that we all know that in reality the duties are often greater than stated. Sweep coordination at all levels requires good people manager skills. This report covers an area from the Hawkesbury to North Outer Hunter and Port Stephens and the surrounding areas. I approach the task of sweep coordination as being the employee of everyone, sometimes feeling like the servant, sometimes the butler, sometimes the administrator, and sometimes the wise owl, helping the new generation of sweeps on their pathway, their journey. The past season has been a metaphor for a new beginning and challenge; particularly, selfreview prior to signing on for another 2 year term with DB NSW. That will mean I have completed ten years assisting sweep development, accreditation and review as well as fulfilling sweep coordinator roles at regattas for my region. Despite the position description, no boundaries really exist for us on the DBNSW Sweep Coordinator Sub Committee and the sweep family in general. I greatly respect those, who take the challenge to steer dragon boats in training and competition. I must acknowledge the people who have contributed this regional group. Katy Cummings (Deep Water Dragons) and our hero of the DBNSW headquarters, Ramsay Cobb for the idea and commissioning a more specific regional grouping F/B. I am grateful to our club members who have assisted during the year. Dragon boating is a passion, to which many dedicate their recreational hours. I remember back to my assessment day on Blackwattle Bay. I had never been on this water before. My assessor was Steven Davidson, who showed great control and authority. He showed me that I had a voice and some ability and it was time to use it. I encourage all sweeps to make their voice loud and clear. Your paddlers need it. I congratulate all those new sweeps, who were accredited in the past year. I urge them to improve and gain confidence and one day make a contribution to sweep education at club and regional levels. Peter Richardson Northern Region 1 Sweep Coordinator Sweeping is a challenge. If we do our job correctly, we come off the water and have added to the performance of the crew. Maybe once in our sweeping careers we will have prefect race. I have yet to get one although I leave that for others to judge. To the specific development of DBNSW NR1 Sweeping Region we have moved into a move formalized arrangement of not just waiting for a request from individuals or clubs but seek the clubs to create a calendar of dates for development, accreditation and training sessions to DRAGON BOATS NSW INC. ANNUAL REPORT

15 Northern Region 2 The season saw many of our Northern Region sweeps gain valuable experience in State and National competition as well as overseas regattas. As a result, several have been nominated for L4 accreditation. It is testimony to their willingness to travel out of their local area and get involved in a wider range of water conditions and competition levels. In NR2 we had a few sweep workshops that were well attended by members from Port Macquarie, Camden Haven, Wallis Spirit, Pearl Dragons, Kempsey, and South West Rocks. The one held at Forster saw no fewer than seven paddlers get on the back of the boat for the very first time ever. Since then, one has attained L2 accreditation and two others are within weeks of being assessed. Currently, the NR2 clubs have about a dozen new sweeps in training with most in sight of having their L2 assessment in Spring. The aerobic endurance training being done during winter by many NR2 clubs is providing our new sweeps plenty of opportunity to gain confidence on the back of their boats and practise some manoeuvres. In general, the sweeps presenting for L2 accreditation in the NR2 region have been well prepared. The only two aspects of sweeping that tend to be challenging are holding position for a race start on moving water and simulating the J-turn and pontoon park required for SIRC and similar venues. It is frustrating for the starter and other boats when sweeps haven t been trained to hold position rather than hold water. This is an aspect of training that needs greater focus. Asking a crew to hold water (i.e. bury their blades in the water) means the boat will move forward or back according to the direction of the current. This is why holding position (i.e. using two or more back rows to paddle against the current to keep the boat stationary) is an essential skill for any sweep competing in regattas on moving water. Sweeps and trainee sweeps from several NR2 clubs have commented on how valuable it has been to attend sessions on the Camden Haven River where the conditions vary considerably with tides and weather. It is an ideal training ground for sweeps. Having a wide range of water conditions from session to session provides experience that can t always be gained on other waterways in our area. As we head into this new season I look forward to seeing more NR2 sweeps gain accreditation and experience the exhilaration of being on the back of a boat during a closely competed race.
