1 November 6, Volume 2, Issue 2 Bringing e Good News to Saint Caerine s Annual Blessing of e Pets Anoer Success Emma Stallbaumer St. Francis of Assisi loved animals, said Faer Dan. When we bless em, we are teaching about St. Francis, and it is good to teach about him. The blessing of e pets has been a Zoe Harris, a student at Saint tradition for St. Caerine for a few years Caerine, has been to blessing of e now, and is someing at a lot of students and parishioners attend, even if pets a few times now. This time she brought her one year old dog named you bring your pet or just a picture of Lucky. it.8 I wanted to bring him because I love So why do we do e Blessing of e him! said Harris. Pets? Noah Holtzman also attended e blessing of e pets.. This was his first time coming wi his dog Bogey. He is kind of a crazy dog and hopefully is blessing will calm him down a bit, said Holtzman. Overall e blessing of e pets is a fun event for parishioners and eir pets! Faer PJ, as well as several students, attend e blessing of e pets. They also went to e Mulvane Art Museum, where ey went to e very famous gallery and did some For e first time, e 8 grade class, accompanied by Faer Dan, Mr. Barr, and Mrs. hands-on activities. The class also went to e Brown v. Board of Education National Historic Maliszewski, went on a 3-hour field trip to Site, which is a building dedicated to a historic Topeka. This trip consisted of 3 main attractions at 8 grade attended, plus a talk lawsuit, saying at schools could no longer be separated for black and white students. wi State Senator Gene Suellentrop, who is 8 grade had a lot of fun and had many also a Saint Caerine of Siena parishioner. learning experiences, Mrs. Maliszewski said. The first stop was e Capitol Building. It took 45 minutes to walk up to e building,
2 2 November 6, 2017 Volume 2, Issue 2 Chloe Webb Columnist/Feature Reporter Two of e staff reporters at e Holy Herald, Chloe Webb and Sydney Olson, engage in an opposing viewpoints column about violence in video games, Video games are a lot of fun, but aren t always e best choice for ose who don t know how to separate e violent games from real life. Many games have a suggested age at which you should be to play e game. Games at involve cursing and guns are normally suggested to ages irteen or above. If you aren t of ose ages or mature enough to handle it, you shouldn t be playing it. Wheer we mean it or not, what we hear in video games can become a habit for us to say in real life. If we hear a lot of cursing or violent words we can begin to get use to em too often. The American Psychological Association and e American Academy of Pediatrics are really against children and teens playing violent video games. More an ninety percent of children in e United States play video games, and at increases to ninety-seven percent for children ages twelve and seventeen. It was observed by e American Psychological Association in an August 2015 policy statement at violent video game use increases aggressive behavior and decreases prosocial behavior, empay, and moral engagement. The American Academy of Pediatrics stated ese games and wheer at violence carries over to real life. should not use human or oer living targets or award points for killing, because is teaches children to associate pleasure and success wi eir ability to cause pain and suffering to oers. We should encourage kids to help ose who are hurt or apologize to ose ey hurt, not laugh at em. Empay for oers and having feelings aren t bad ings, but lacking in ose can be. Parents need to be aware of what video games do to eir child s brain. When a child is playing a game, eir brain s nervous system is heightened. The game causes e child s brain to act as if it were in battle, and eir brain is trying to overcome different situations, strategize, and defend his virtual self. However, e child is just sitting ere. In conclusion, playing violent video games isn t good for a kid who can t handle it. It can cause em to say or do bad ings, be more aggressive, lack in wanting to help oers, enjoy seeing oers hurt, and cause eir nervous system to confuse e child's body and brain wi what is really going on. Do what is best for your child and eir brain. Sydney Olson News/Feature Reporter As early as e 1970 s, videogames have been around to help provide a source of entertainment for people of all ages. Since at time, parents and teachers have been telling children at video games will turn eir minds to mush. But is is true? Blaming video games for violence is an easy scape goat for people who don t want to acknowledge or take responsibility for problems at have existed in our society for years. Mentality s like is have plagued our culture for quite a long time. Making excuses for bad behavior is not in e best interest for anyone. It s time for us to come to our senses and realize at violent crime and tragedy has been around long before video games even existed. We really need to blame e person emselves for eir own actions and hold em accountable, instead of pointing fingers at ings at aren t even relevant to e problem at hand. Perhaps, because millions of people purchase and play such a wide variety of video games every day, at ere is a bigger chance of one of ose people happens to have a few screws loose. According to e most recent FBI report, even ough e population has been steadily increasing over e years, serious crime has been on e decline. As e years have gone by and as video game hysteria has become more wide spread, murder and crime has actually gone down and has decreased considerably. So, by stating videogames in recent years have been inspiring people to commit more crime and heinous acts is simply not true. Whitney DeCamp, an associate professor of sociology at Western Michigan University, says e evidence points to eier no relationship between playing video games and violent behavior or an "insignificant" link between e two. In his own study, he examined at question using data from e 2008 Delaware School Survey, which included responses from 6,567 eighgraders. Among e questions, students were asked wheer ey had played violent video games in e past year. He discovered at playing video games, no matter how bloody, did not predict violent behavior. Christopher Ferguson, associate professor and co-chairman of e Department of Psychology at Stetson University, supports is view. He goes so far as to suggest at violent video games may help reduce societal violence raer an increase it. He added at newer studies "wi better meods" have typically failed to find much evidence of a connection between brutal games and even minor aggressive acts, let alone violence. While e debate rages on, Ferguson believes e tide has turned against linking video games to violence. There's more skepticism ese days, he said, and recently, a group of 238 scholars asked e American Psychological Association to retire its "outdated and problematic statements on video game violence." Bo e American Psychological Association and e American Academy of Pediatrics suggest at parents take an active interest in and monitor e games played by eir children. This simple bit of practical advice -- and not an all-out prohibition -- may be e best solution. In conclusion, e evidence shows at playing and enjoying video games have no significant correlation wi committing serious crimes. I ink at we need take responsibility for our own actions instead of trying to blame it on everying else except e individual responsible, which is e harsh (but true) reality of e situation.
3 3 November 6, 2017 Volume 2, Issue 2 Halloween has an Unexpected History Isabelle Thomas News Reporter Halloween wasn t always just a fun day to dress up like your favorite ing. It started about 2000 years ago. There was a festival called Samhain, celebrated on November 1 st. On e night before Samhain, people believed at e dead returned as ghosts, and to keep e ghosts away, ey would leave food and wine on eir doorsteps. They would wear masks whenever ey left e house so ey would blend in wi e oer ghosts. In e 8 century e Caolic Church turned Samhain into All Saints Day, and e night before became All Hallows Eve, or Halloween. On Halloween, we go trick or treating, but why? Trick or treating came from different places. One ing people did was someing called guising. That was when people would dress up in costumes and accept food and money by singing, telling jokes and dancing. In 19 century America, e tradition was brought back. It was changed to trick-ortreating and it was mostly about tricks. It was not until e 1950 s at Halloween became a day full of candy and costumes. On Halloween we all enjoy candy and costumes, I hope you enjoyed your Halloween! An Original Spook Story, by Sidney Sheern One day a family moved into an old house. After ey were all settled in, ey went to bed. The little girl heard a strange tapping sound like tap tap tap-pity tap, but she ignored it. The next night her broer heard e same ings. He told eir parents but ey told him it was just e creaky house. When e sister found out her broer had heard e tapping too, she began to grow curious. The next night she wanted to sleep wi her broer so she could go exploring in e night, to figure out what e sound was. Little did ey know, eir faer was following em, making sure ey didn t find his secret. When ey ought eir parents were asleep, ey snuck out of eir room. They went to e door to e basement, a place where ey were not allowed to go. The closer ey got, e louder e sound. They went to e basement. It was locked! They had to figure a way to break e lock. They tried to break wi a hammer and wi a rock. Finally, ey got a hair pin and picked e lock. As ey slowly descended e stairs, ey heard eir faer s voice, and e taping grew louder wi every step ey took. When ey got to e bottom ey saw a frightening sight Their dad was dancing wi monsters! There were skeletons, vampires, zombies, and ghosts. They were scared at first en ey were excited and started to dance wi e monsters. Their family lived happily ever after wi e monsters in eir basement. The Kid-Safe Lava Lamp Hi, my name is Raymond Vasquez, and I will be showing you e easy steps of how to make a kid safe lava lamp. Kids can be entertained as ey watch is experiment. This is an experiment at kids will like, and can do at home. All you need is a water bottle, food coloring (your choice), 1 bottle of vegetable oil, and 2 Alka-Seltzer tablets. If you are going to do is experiment, you may want anoer hand around while you pour. The first easy step is to grab e materials you need for is experiment. The second step is to fill e water bottle ¼ full wi water. Third step is to grab e vegetable oil and fill e bottle until it is 1 inch below e top. The four step is to grab e food coloring and put at least 3 drops of in e bottle. The fif step is to put one of e Alka-Seltzer tablets in e bottle and watch e colorful bubbles rise to e top of e bottle. You can repeat as many times as you like. Just remember, do not close e lid until e Alka- Seltzer tablets have completely dissolved, and ALWAYS ask your parent s permission before 1 2 trying any science experiment. 3 4
