1 January, 2015 Cadet Dedication Continues While School is Out! Special points of interest: Summer Camps Food Drive Instead of participating in typical summer activities, some of our cadets have taken their level of dedication above and beyond by enrolling in a few various Summer Leadership Camps. These summer programs include; The Cadet Officer Leadership Program (COLP), The Cadet Officer Leadership School at Smith Mountain Lake, VA, and our very own Summer Orientation Camp. These cadets demonstrate their full potential and leadership capabilities by attending and graduating from these camps. Shared experiences inside. Inside this issue: COLP 2 SOC 2 Smith Mountain Lake 2 Cadet Birthdays 3 Color Guard 3 Andrew s Air Force Base 4 Flight Competition Food Drive During the months of October and November, our unit held a food drive to help the Southern Maryland Food Bank and brought in over 2000 pounds of food. The flights had a small competition with an incentive at the end to see who could bring in the most food. One cadet was noted to have said "... even if their flight didn't win there are a lot of people getting food. That's the main win." -- truly a cadet focused on others. Cadet Promotions 4-5
2 MD Newsletter Page 2 C.O.L.P. by Ashley Turner My experience at C.O.L.P was amazing. I had a lot of fun and I met new people. It taught me how to get over my fear of speaking to new people. It was a lot of work, but I got through it. My T.I. s were awesome and they taught me a lot. T.I. Love made me feel comfortable in my flight and he helped me a lot. T.I. McPherson was really nice to me too. When we had to present in front of people they helped me get over my fear one step at a time. They noticed I was shy and they worked with me. I had a lot of fun and I signed up to be a T.I. for this upcoming year at C.O.L.P. S.O.C. by Kiana Allosada When I went to S.O.C, I did not know a lot of the things they were talking about, but as the day had went on, I got to know the people and what their ranks and positions are. Speaking of ranks I didn t really know a whole lot about them but I was able to take the time and learn about them and I thought they were pretty cool. I had also learned, at S.O.C, what attention, parade rest, present arms, order arms, etc. meant and what you re supposed to do when you re told to do any of those commands. At S.O.C we did a lot of P.T. meaning pushup, pull-ups, crunches and it was pretty hard but I liked exercising, it helped keep me in shape. I wasn t expecting to do any of this or evening learning before school started but at the end of camp I was sad that it ended because I had an amazing time. Smith Mountain Lake by Garrett Smith I had a great experience at Smith Mountain Lake. There were many fun activities such as marksmanship and archery. The food was just like school food. I figured out that a warm bed at 5:15 in the morning is really comfortable. Marching up hills wasn t very fun, but my roommates were pretty funny and overall I had a pretty good week at Smith Mountain Lake.
3 MD Newsletter Page 3 Cadet Birthdays Dabler, Amber 11/5 Hoffman, Ryan 11/7 Snellen, Caitlin 11/12 Evans, Camryn 12/1 Reeves, Talmage 12/9 Pallo, Samantha 12/23 Tasciotti, Alexander 12/26 Dobry, Jordan 12/2 Ledman, Alexis 1/5 Edge, Cole 1/8 Kaylor, Trevor 1/8 Vincent, Bradly 1/10 Color Guard by Jacob Peddicord Campbell, Tyler 1/14 Breanna Riddle 1/15 Kern, William Lindsey, David Nelsen, Cole 1/23 Teletchea, Marshall 1/30 This year s color guard has come off to a great start with a lot of great and memorable color guard events taking place. These events show school spirit and participation in our local community. The first event we participated in was the September 11 th color guard, where we ceremonially raised the flags in honor of those affected from that life-changing day. Next we presented the colors in one of our best annual events, the homecoming parade and game. Also we presented the colors for the National Honor Society Induction. Then we participated in the Leonardtown Veterans Day parade, where we marched through Leonardtown Square. Lastly we participated the Powder Puff game, where an all-female color guard presented the flags for the opening of the game. Veteran s Day This year s veterans day parade featured Chopticon High School s AFJROTC Program as the entire unit marched in divided squadrons through Leonardtown Square. The unit s color guard, consisting of, Jacob Peddicord, Heath Scott, Ryan Barski, Alyna Peddicord, and Nicole Sage, led the group throughout the entire parade. It was a very memorable experience says Ryan Barski. It s not everyday that we get to honor our country s service members in this way. The parade route concluded shortly after the announcer s box and the entire group went home feeling proud and fulfilled. These events show school spirit and participation in our local community.
4 Andrew s AFB Field Trip by Samantha Pallo The field trip on Thursday was really cool and fun. We got to see an F-16 and learn about all the different parts of the plane. I learned a lot more about the F-16 Fighter Jet than I did before. We also got to go into a huge plane and see what all the officials get to fly in when they go places. We also got to see the flight deck and see how many switches there really are. I had a lot of fun and I learned tons of new things. I would love to go back and visit the base again. The following cadets were promoted to C/Amn for the 1 st Quarter of the school year. These cadets reflect the highest standards and accept the responsibilities associated with their assigned rank. Allosada, Kiana Hall, Alexander Herbert, Carlos Lawrence, Ryan Mattingly, Kyle Peddicord, Alanya Potter, Jackson Sage, Nichole Shannon, Anthony Vanaman, Cecilia Vincent, Bradley Widmayer, Joshua The following cadets were promoted to based on recommendations reflecting on job performance, dress and appearance, in addition to the successful completion of Cadet Officer Leadership Course (COLP) or a resident summer leadership course.
