1 TROY HIGH SCHOOL WARRIOR WEEKLY October 12, 2018 It was a wonderful week at Troy High School, highlighted by our Troy Mentor Breakfast on Tuesday! However, before we began this week, we ended last week with the return of our monthly Troy Staff Goodie Days. The first month was hosted by the Front Office Staff, and pictured below is the spread with the appropriate October Halloween theme. The decorations were largely designed by Ms. Maria Williams and Ms. Shannon Cogswell. The treats (goodies) were tasty and I think they have made the next team think about their theme and presentation for the next Goodie Days! I would not worry Maria and Shannon are available for hire.

2 Since Wednesday, teachers have been updating their grades in AERIES in anticipation of the end of the 1 st Quarter today. On Tuesday these grades will be able to be seen on AERIES by students and parents. The fall semester is halfway over. Stay Focused! Go Warriors! As I mentioned in the opening, Tuesday, October 9 th we held our annual Troy Tech Mentor Breakfast. Once again, it was a wonderful opportunity to thank our Troy Tech mentors for their support. We had a large crowd and it was great to hear from both present and past Troy Tech students and as they detailed how the Troy Tech magnet program has impacted their lives and futures. Thank you to all the parent volunteers from TSO and PTSA. Thank you to our NJROTC cadets and their instructors that helped lay all the carpet squares and set up the tables and chairs on Monday. Also thank you to our Troy Pathway coaches and to Troy Tech Coordinator Ms. Laurie Downum and Marketing manager/ib Coordinator, Charlotte Kirkpatrick. I am certain everyone has noticed these two new pavement improvements this week. On the Westside of our Quad we now have a much improved surface. Also, wrapping up this weekend, we have our new asphalt surface, including new basketball courts near the South Gym

3 and Aquatics Center. Thank you very much to M & O and Facilities/Construction key personnel, Mr. Todd Butcher and Mr. Dale McCurry for making these project happen! Why are Troy PE Teacher, Mr. Chris Nichols and the District HR Team wearing Fight Strong Like a Warrior t-shirts? Because it is Pinktober, also known as Breast Cancer Awareness month. Tonight our Varsity Football team will also play in the annual Pinktober football game vs. La Habra High School. Both of our teams are undefeated in Freeway League play and we are on a three game winning streak including the game last Friday in which we had a victory over Buena Park High School! Come out tonight and support our football team! The Fullerton Fire Department and their Pinktober Fire Truck will also be there raising money for St. Jude and the fight against breast cancer. We all know people that have struggled, and continue to struggle with this disease. Aunts, grandparents, parents, spouses, sisters, mothers, it is an equal opportunity disease. We have all lost someone we care about. But we also have hope. Medical science is making progress and there have been breakthroughs that are making

4 differences in the lives of cancer patients. Hopefully in the near future, there will be a cure. In the meantime, we fight and continue to support those that need us the most. There are no losers in this fight, only people that inspire all of us by how they live as they go through struggle. It is by their example we are reminded of what is important in this life. Family, friends, community, these are what matter and our legacy. Mrs. Dorey Madrid leaves a legacy of love, caring, family, and inspiration that ensures she will always be with us. Dorey Madrid continues to make a difference the many lives she touched a legacy that endures. Last weekend, our NJROTC cadets and Commander Lauper brought our first ever female Color Guard team to Hollywood to present our nation s colors at the Ms. Veteran America Event. Our cadets represented our nation and school with excellence and honor at this event, and during the course of the ceremony were even mentioned by some of the participants on stage!

5 While at Ms. Veteran America, our cadets also met last year s winner and a few other celebrities such as Ms. Catherine Bach, also known from her role as Daisy Duke on the television show, The Dukes of Hazzard. On Wednesday our NJROTC held their Change of Command ceremony at lunch on the soccer field. This ceremony happens at specific intervals and is the formal changing of command and corresponding leadership from one team of senior cadets to another. Being in charge of our almost 400 cadets is no easy task and is something our students work towards proving themselves each and every day, as members of our NJROTC and Troy High School. This is a fantastic program and I am certain, had I had this leadership option at my high school I would have taken advantage of this opportunity! Go Warriors! I have great news! We now officially have another E-Sports team! In addition to the spring E-Sports season of League of Legends, we now have a fall E-Sports season also sponsored

6 by the Orange County Office of Education. The fall season plays the game Overwatch. I am happy to report the Troy E-Sports Overwatch team on Wednesday defeated Laguna Hills High School 2-0! Congratulations to our team and to their adviser, Mr. Carlos Aldaco! It makes perfect sense that a technology school like Troy would have an E-Sports team. On Wednesday night, our Girls Volleyball team ended their season on a high note with a 3-0 sweep of rival Fullerton High School. We played three solid games and were always leading in each game. Congratulations on a nice season, and one that will become the backbone for many seasons to come! In other sports news, our Boys water polo team had a good week winning their match and our Girls Team continues to roll and will be shortly doing very well in the postseason. Cross country had an outstanding meet and is poised to make a big move at League Finals. Lastly, in the next couple weeks our Girls Golf Team will be making a serious run through CIF. It has been a nice fall season for Troy Athletics! Come out and see our teams! At Troy we very much enjoy the fall/halloween season. Throughout the school there are decorations and soon we will have the annual Spanish classes cultural recognition of Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) when they decorate the halls of the 300 building with student

7 artwork. These pictures above are some of the early autumn school decorations, soon to be outdone by the students next week! It is going to be a beautiful weekend! If you are taking the PSAT this weekend, please arrive at Troy and be in the proper location no later than 7:30am! I strongly recommend being early. For the rest of the weekend, I hope everyone is able to rest, relax, and spend time with friends and family! Have a wonderful weekend and I will see everyone back here on Monday! W.V.
