1 VOLUME 3, ISSUE 3 SAMUEL OGLE MIDDLE SCHOOL PARCC Pep Rally As you all know, there was an exciting pep rally held for PARCC testing on April 13th, hosted my Mr. Menyweather. The pep rally had great performances. It started off with the national anthem, sung by Ava Blanc, Brianna Repress, and Yasmin Alami. The band and orchestra played the classic, We Will Rock You, and shortly afterward, the cheerleaders performed an impressive dance and cheer with different tricks and flips. Last, but definitely not least, the step team performed a step to an upbeat remix. Then, Ms. Charlton stepped out to give the students some helpful words of encouragement. Following Ms. Charlton s speech, there was a small dance battle that would definitely make you laugh out loud! Here is what some of the audience members had to say about the pep rally held for PARCC testing: I was in the orchestra part of the room, and I really enjoyed it. I found a lot of the parts really funny, especially the dance battle. -Madifa Ambe It was a good time to get away from class. -Carlos Hernandez No matter what your experience at the Pep Rally was like, we know you worked hard on PARCC and represented the Ogle RAMS. -Brooke McClinton

2 Did You Know? Samuel Ogle originally opened as an Elementary School in Samuel Ogle was a Governor of Maryland in the 1700s. Samuel Ogle is one of only a few schools in PG County without a uniform policy. Newspaper Staff Spotlight Name: Christopher Sitney Favorite Teacher: Ms. Vane Future Career: graphic designer What will you miss most about Samuel Ogle? my friends and the clubs A Drama Kids Performance On every Tuesday and Thursday this year, two different casts put a hard effort into preparing for a performance in the play, The Kidnapping of Kitty O Hara. They had to put themselves through extensive practice and pretend they were in the 1920 s. The play is about two rival gangs that have to come together and pretend they are something they aren t. The boss, Big Benny, had a daughter who was visiting, and Benny didn t want her to figure out what he really did for money. He makes a proposal with Luke, the leader of Benny s rival gang, to keep his mouth shut. When Kitty arrives, everything went the way it was supposed to until the next day. Something terrible happens to Kitty, and the two gangs have to come together and settled their differences to find her. It was show to remember. -Christopher Sitney

Although not as popular today, it used to be a tradition to eat a picnic on the grounds of a cemetery on Memorial Day. 4. Memorial Day marks the unofficial start of summer, while Labor Day marks the end. 5. 4 INSIDE NATIONAL JUNIOR HONOR SOCIETY As most of you know, the induction of many of Samuel Ogle Middle School s eight graders into National Junior Honor Society was just a few weeks ago. I had the opportunity to interview the leaders and some of the members about their experiences this year. Let s see what they had to say: Q: Why should students join NJHS? A: It prepares them for the world and allows them to gain leadership skills. Q: What does NJHS do for a student? A: Helps them to be more focused, and it will look good on resumes. Q: What do people do in NJHS? A: The members help plan projects for the school, and the members also do service for our community. Q: What things can a student do to help get into NJHS? A: Stay focused in school, display leadership skills in classes and make honor roll. Q: How can a student join? A: They have to meet a set of criteria: 3.6 or above GPA, go to an interest meeting, fill out a packet, and interview Q: Can 7th graders join? A: Yes 7th graders can join. 5 J.A. Finance Park: The Electronic Simulator that Prepares Children for the Future Finance is one of the most important topics that students must know in order to be successful in life. Finance is the management of large amounts of money, especially by governments or large companies. As an adult you must also be able to budget and manage the money you make and spend. At the finance park, kids of any age can come and learn how to keep track of their funds. They also learn how to save money for the future. The activities located there are all based on real-world scenarios. Every person gets a description of a situation, which includes a job, a family, place of residence, the amount of money they make, and the amount of money they have. Based on this information, the students engaged in the activities must create a budget for the money they raise. Second, they begin to buy the things they need for life, including a home and a car. Lastly, they calculate the amount of money that is saved after the budgeting and spending. These simulations provide teens and children alike with several different opportunities to prepare for their futures. -Cameren Sitney Farewell to Two of Samuel Ogle s Finest This year, Samuel Ogle says goodbye to Ms. Thornton and Mrs. Maxwell after over seven decades of combined service.
