1 2013 State 4-H Horse Contest Results by Debra J. Hagstrom, M.S. Equine Extension Specialist, University of Illinois On May 4 and 5 approximately 230 Illinois youth participated in the State 4-H horse contests. Two days were spent competing in various horse related contests allowing the 4-H ers to demonstrate their knowledge and expertise on a wide range of equine topics. This contest determines the individuals that will represent Illinois at two national competitions in the events of Horse Bowl, Hippology, and three types of public speaking contests. Hippology In the Hippology contest, 4-H ers had their horse knowledge tested in a very comprehensive fashion. Beginning their long day of activities on Saturday, the Hippology contestants judged four classes of horses, testing their knowledge of breed conformation standards and requirements of performance classes. The next phase of the Hippology contest was the slides phase where contestants answered questions pertaining to a series of pictures or video clips. The third phase of Hippology was a multiple choice written exam covering a wide range of equine information. The Junior division Hippology contestants finished the day with the stations phase of the contest. There were 10 stations that had 10 questions each. The 4-H ers were timed and had two minutes to complete each station. After stations, senior and intermediate division contestants also had to complete an oral problem. Hippology contestants had to qualify at their respective regional contests in order to participate at the state contest. The top ten results in the Junior division (ages 8-11) with are as follows: Placing County Contestant Coach Total 1 Union Audrey Derossett Cindy Walker Knox Jenna Cisna Rebecca Curry Edwards Sophie Ballard Ryan Smith Kane Gwen Klinkey Sandy Klinkey Edwards Cailyn Nelson Ryan Smith Bureau Stephanie Gripp Jeanna Ohda Kane Shianne Votava Sandy Klinkey Mercer Ashlyn Ryan Kirby McLaughlin Madison Rhianan Hall Justine Kolesa Carroll Olivia Charles Bryan Hollewell
2 There were many fresh faces in the intermediate division (ages 12-14) this year. However, Emily Shilling from Edwards Co took the top spot for the second year in a row. With a total of 43 participants, the top ten ribbons were awards to the following individuals: Placing County Contestant Coach Total 1 Edwards Emily Shilling Adrianna Shilling Bureau Kiersten Pratt Jeanna Ohda Carroll Natalie Shaw Joan Harms Monroe Renee Ellegood Kelly Schipkowski Mercer Bethany Zmuda Kirby McLaughlin Shelby Rylee McKinney Lori Miser/Theresa Boehm Mercer Courtney Wiedenmann Sandy Neuleib Knox Lauren Cisna Pauline Curry Grundy Elizabeth Vejr Lisa Leach Ogle Gretchen Richter Lori Meyer The stakes were high in the Senior division (ages 15-18) competition because the top 6 individuals are invited to compete for spots on the 2013 Illinois 4-H Hippology team, which will compete at two national contests, the All-American Quarter Horse Congress 4-H Hippology contest in Columbus, OH and the Eastern Nat l 4-H Horse Roundup Hippology contest in Louisville, KY. With 25 total competitors, the top ten high individuals for the senior division of Hippology were: Placing County Contestant Coach Total 1 Kane Chelsea Danforth Melissa Daufenbach Monroe Mary Williams Kelly Schipkowski McHenry Jordon Langan Karen Sanders McHenry Rachael Siddons Mara Stowe Madison Shelby Warren Justin Kolesa Mercer Erin Hayes Melanie Neulieb Grundy Gabi Born Lisa Leach DeKalb Krista Day Jennifer Jacobsen Carroll Renee Henert Joan Harms DuPage Aubrey Sieve Karen Woznicki
3 Horse Bowl Horse Bowl requires that the participants be quick minded and fast fingered in order to be the first to push their buzzer and answer the question. There were thirteen teams in the Junior contest making it the largest contest in the past several years. The first part of the contest was double elimination. Once the final four teams were determined round-robin play began. The results were as follows: Junior Horse Bowl Team Results County Team Members Coach Score Placing Lake Angela Rauch Lucy Tarcha Eileen Tarcha Elizabeth Cozzi 96 1 Greta Rauch Mercer Bethany Zmuda Korryn Baraks Andrew Barb Wiedenmann 61 2 Wiedenmann Ashlyn Ryan Kane Madde Klinkey Gwen Klinkey Shianne Votava Sandy Klinkey 61 3 Elena Chapa Carroll Katie Hoffman Caryssa Hemmen Kaiti Collins Bryan Hollewelll 41 4 Olivia Charles Alivia Preston Knox/Warren Jessica Hall Colby Trone Mikki Woods Thalia Jimenez Dana Trone Junior Horse Bowl Individual Results Contestant County Coach Score Placing Madde Klinkey Kane Sandy Klinkey 37 1 Jessica Hall Knox/Warren Dana Trone 32 2 Jessica Hall Warren 30 3 Samantha Jenson Kane Melissa Daufenbach 27 4 Kaylyn Hall Warren 27 5 Emily Shilling Edwards1 Brandy Melloy 27 6 Jamie Wills Kane Melissa Daufenbach 23 7 Abbey Kelly Rock Island Mandy Hoag 23 8 Lauren Huseman DuPage Laura Younglove 22 9 Rylee Mckinney Coles Lori Miser 22 10
4 As with Hippology, in the Senior Division of Horse Bowl the teams play for the right to represent the state at the two national contests. However, Horse Bowl contestants compete as a team so the top county team earns the trip to both national contests rather than the top four individuals. Additionally, the second place team is eligible to compete at the All American Quarter Horse Congress Horse Bowl Contest. This year there were nine teams in the Senior division.
