1 2016 CHERRY COUNTY 4-H HORSE PROJECT INFORMATION Be sure to read through this information carefully. It contains important information regarding the 4-H Horse Project and summer 4-H horse activities. If you have any questions, please call the Extension Office at If you need hard copies of any of this information, we will make it available to you. Pay close attentions to DATES, DEADLINES AND HORSE ADVANCEMENT LEVELS TESTING REQUIREMENTS. 1. County Fair: a. The County Fair 4-H Horse Show, including the Working Ranch Horse and Break-Away Roping competitions, will be August 9, Entry forms will be posted on the web site with all other entry forms at a later date. They will due to the office on July 25. The stock fee for Working Ranch Horse and Roping will be due with those entry forms. b. Dress code requirements are listed on page 21 of the Nebraska 4-H Horse Show and Judging Guide (4-H 373). This is available from the Extension Office. c. The County Fair Open Horse Show is August 8. d. Horse ID sheets for County Fair participation are due to the office by June 15. They are available at the office or at e. Round Robin Showmanship will be held Saturday, Aug. 13, 2016 at 1:00 PM. The Champion and Reserve Champion Senior Showman for beef, sheep, swine and horse will compete in this event. Once a 4-Her is named Champion Round Robin Showman, they are ineligible to participate in the competition for two years. If a Champion or Reserve Champion showman is ineligible, the purple ribbon winner following the Reserve Champion showman will then be eligible for Round Robin Showmanship. 2. District and State Horse Shows: a. District and State Horse Shows are applicable to members 10 and older. Information about these shows is available at b. Notify the Office if you are planning to compete in the non riding contests (Horse Judging and Hippology) by June 1. c. Additional information about these activities can be found at

2 d. Entry forms for District and State Horse Shows, as well as the ID sheets and entry fees, are due to the office by May 13, Entry fees for each class are $10. Levels testing must be completed at this time also for district and state competition. 3. Horse Advancement Levels Testing: a. Levels Testing requirements are listed in detail in the following information. All testing and proof of completion must be submitted to the Extension Office no later than July 25, It is the responsibility of the Horse Project members to verify the appropriate level has been passed for their age or event as shown below. Call the office if you have questions. See also Purpose of Levels Testing: The levels of advancement in the 4-H Horse Project are designed to serve as guides for instruction and evaluation of each member s progress. The correct handling of horses is emphasized from the beginning level to the most advanced level. This emphasis will develop the member's self-discipline, patience, self-reliance, responsibility and pride of accomplishment within the horse project. Levels Testing Completion Requirements for Events: COUNTY FAIR Junior Riding Events To compete in Intermediate or Senior Riding Events, Ranch Horse Pleasure & all Roping Events 2-3 Year Old Western Pleasure Showing at Halter Level must be completed Level I Levels I & II Levels I, II, III Level I (written test only) DISTRICT & STATE HORSE SHOWS & AK-SAR-BEN ** Must be completed no later than May 13, 2016 ** Extension personnel must certify that proper levels have been passed before entries can be submitted. To compete in District, State, Ak-Sar-Ben State & Ak-Sar-Ben Level III and/or IV classes Levels I & II Levels III and/or IV Level must be completed

3 Advancement Level Records: Each 4-Her must provide a copy of the Record Sheet from the 4-H Horse Project Advancement Levels book: (Level I page 8, Level II pages 15-16, Level 3 pages 23-24, Level IV pages 30-31). The Record sheets must be completed entirely and signed by the testing leaders to be noted as a successful pass. Plan Ahead: Completing the levels testing requirements is a process. Waiting to complete the requirements at the last minute is not recommended. Only one horse may be used for the entire skills (riding) test for each level. Horses used for Advancement Level III should be at least 3 years old, and at least 4 years old for Advancement Level IV. Demonstrations: A different demonstration must be done for each advancement level. Written Exams: Written tests are to be taken for Level I, II, and III. These exams are administered at the Extension Office. Questions for each exam are taken from the following: Level I, II, III, IV Level III, IV Nebraska 4-H Horse Project Manual Nebraska 4-H Horse Show and Judging Guide Horse Science (available to borrow or purchase at Extension Office) **No written exam will be given for Level IV; however, oral questions will be asked during the skills test. Questions on the skills test were taken from the same sources as those of Level III. Levels Passing Requirements: A passing grade of 80 percent must be received on any written test and proficiency demonstrated on all areas on the advancement levels test to gain eligibility to advance to the next level of certification. Levels testing must be completed in sequential order starting at Level I. If a 4-H member fails to pass any section of the levels test that entire section must be repeated, until is it passed. Each part of any level may be repeated as many times as necessary for successful completion. However, only two attempts per day are allowed for the written exam. Level advancement will not be granted to a 4-Her until all parts (written exam, demonstration, etc.) of each advancement level (Level I, II, III, or IV) are completed satisfactorily. If 4-Hers need special testing considerations, please discuss this with Jody. Levels Testing Examiners: Each section of an advancement level record sheet must be signed and dated by a certified examiner. UNL requires leaders that do skills testing to complete a certification course inorder to give Level I and LeveII skills test. Below is a listing of who can observe and sign off on levels testing requirements. All Demonstrations: Club leader or Levels Testing-Practice Sessions (see item 4 below). All Reports & Charts: Club leader or Levels Testing-Practice Sessions or turn in to Extension Office. Level I, II, III Written Exams: Administered at Extension Office 8-11 or 1-4. Please allow yourself plenty of time to take the test between these hours. Level IV Oral Exam: Skills Test Examiner Skills (Riding) Tests: Only certified individuals can conduct the riding skills test. 4 Summer Practices, Clinics, Show Sessions: The Cherry County 4-H Horse Committee is conducting opportunities to allow 4-H Horse project members to practice their riding skills. Juli Brown will be conducting a series of three clinics to improve horsemanship skill and gain confidence in horse handling. Cost for each session is $10. Incentives and prizes will be awarded at each session. Please make your own lunch arrangements. th May 27 10:00 AM, CT - in the pavilion at the Cherry County Fairgrounds. This will be ground work only. Do not bring your horse. Please bring horse manual, rule, and horsemanship advancement level books. In addition to ground work, we will be learning about feeds, tack parts of the horse and hoof. Register by 5/23. rd June 23 10:00 AM, CT arena at the Cherry County Fairgrounds. Cherry County 4-H Horse Incentive Program Cherry County 4-H Horse participants have the opportunity to earn a variety of incentive awards for the time they spend on their horse projects from May 1 through September 30. The request form and calendar log sheets must be turned into the Office by October 15. Additional information follows. How It Works Log the number of hours you participate in horse activities on the sheets provided starting May 1 and concluding September 30. Your logged hours must be turned in on the calendar log sheets by October 15. Any 4-Her can participate in the horse incentive program and log hours by participating in the various activities listed below. The more hours you invest the more valuable the reward! Honesty Plea The foundation of 4-H was built on many positive character traits, one of which is honesty. Please make sure the hours logged are accurate and true. Spot checks may be done. Guidelines 1. Activities to include in your logged hours 4-H Club meetings (Independent Club members cannot count meetings), riding practices, clinics, attending Horse Expo, club volunteer work, Jr. Leader volunteer work, watching instructional horse related videos, programs or horse related UNL webinars Feeding, grooming, observing and interacting with a farrier, vet or other horse professional, making or repairing horse equipment Competing in horse shows (5 hour max per show, list name and date of show), trail rides, general riding, ranch work (30 hour max), judging, or other horse related events or competitions (5 hour max per competition or event)

6 Reading or studying about horses (non-fiction does not count - 20 hours max) Any volunteer/community service (20 hours max) 2. You may double your hours for the following activities: Giving horse related speech or demonstration Horse Advancement Level passed District and/or State Horse Show State Horse Bowl or Hippology team County Hippology contest Attending Stampede 3. Bonus Hours If you turn in a completed Career Portfolio record book had 30 hours to your total If you serve as a club officer add 1 hour for each month you held the office to your total If you enter a static exhibit at the County Fair add 10 hours to your total Jr. Leaders total the hours spent doing Jr. leader activities on the log calendar sheet, and add an additional bonus of 10 hours to your total 4. Drive time does not count when attending shows, events or other activities. You can only log hours that you are actively involved. 5. The Cherry County 4-H Horse Committee reserves the right to require verification of the hours you log. You must have a parent, guardian or leader signature on the log sheet when you turn it in. 6. The Reward Request form and calendar log sheets are available on the next two pages.
