Trophy Sponsors Needed Clover Kid Meeting Teen Supremes Upcoming Events MARKET BEEF WEIGH-IN Beef weigh-in was held Sunday, March 3 at the Wayne Veterinary Clinic. Thirty-six head were weighed and tagged. Reminder to families that identified Ak- Sar-Ben/State Fair animals to input their animal information into the AKSARBEN livestock database and pay the nomination fee. Thanks to all the volunteers who helped! Note: The State deadline for nominating market beef has changed to June 15 due to the blizzard and flooding that occurred a few weeks ago. Wayne County s Market Beef ID deadline will also be June 15. UPDATES & REMINDERS April 1, 2019 *The 4-H Public Speaking Contest is April 8, 7:00 p.m. at the Wayne County. Entries are due to the Extension Office on or before April 5. *Early Bird registration for the Big Red Summer Camps is April 15. Go to 4-H 4-H Camps for camp and scholarship information. *NAYI Applications must be postmarked by April 15. The selection of delegates to this Institute is based on an application form that is available at * at Nebraska (Chapter 1) is April 19, 9:00 a.m. noon at the. Registration is due April 16. *Now is a good time to complete the online YQCA course or take written tests for Horse Levels. Please call the office to set up a time for the Horse Level tests so one can be ready for you. Check last months newsletter or contact the Extension Office for details. WAYNE COUNTY FAIR ENTRY FORMS NEW FOR 2019 County Fair Entry Forms will be mailed to all families in April and are due to the Extension Office on or before July 3. Please check your white form to make sure your information is correct and your project listing is complete. If changes are needed, log into your 4Honline account and update your information. All updates must be made by midnight June 15. Please remember that projects the 4-Her intends to exhibit at the fair must be added by this date. Organizational Leaders will receive a copy of their club s enrollments in their packet. Fair entry forms will replace the copies sent in previous years to families. We are hoping that by sending the entry forms earlier it will be helpful for families exhibiting animals that want to make their entries when ID s are due on June 15. Please contact the Extension Office if you have questions. FLOOD RESOURCES Due to the recent weather event that has impacted our state, a website has been created that includes family, homeowner, businesses, and agriculture resources. Donation and volunteer resources are available as well. Go to: for more information. 2 YOUTH HORTICULTURE ID CONTEST The Northeast Nebraska Master Gardeners will be hosting a Youth Horticulture ID Contest at their annual Plant Fair & Market. All youth ages 8-18 are encouraged to participate. Participation is free but all participants must preregister by April 23 by contacting the Nebraska Extension office in Madison County Prizes will be given for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place finishers in each of the age brackets. Contestants will be required to sight ID horticultural plants to the accepted common name. Please watch your mailbox for a postcard and details. Please turn in volunteer insurance fees as soon as possible. Remember to send a list of your club officers and the date your club meets to the Extension Office. Please have the club secretary send a copy of the club minutes to the Extension Office after each meeting. CURRICULUM (4-H MANUAL) ORDERS Club leaders and members will order their own materials again in Go to and search for your project. Click the more link and you will find a list of curriculum for that project under the Resources heading. Clicking the name of the manual will take you directly to the website where you can learn more about the content and to purchase it. The Extension Office has file copies if you would like to look at a manual. We also have a limited amount of inventory, so please check with us before you order. Websites: National 4-H: (choose curriculum) All curriculum is 25% off April 1-30 on this site. Nebraska 4-H: (choose 4-H Youth Development, then curriculum) Volunteers are an essential part of our 4-H program. They don t expect to be rewarded for their efforts, so it is especially gratifying when we are able to reward them with recognition. National Volunteer Week is an excellent time to give our 4-H volunteers a little extra boost! It is also a chance for the community to become aware of the value and dedication of 4-H volunteers to our program. Please consider doing something for your volunteer leaders during the week of April H CLUB OF THE MONTH The Nebraska 4-H Foundation and Nebraska 4-H Ambassadors have joined together to start a program which recognizes 4-H clubs throughout the state of Nebraska. Any 4-H club may nominate themselves to be the Club of the Month. Nominations are due the second Friday of the month before the club will be the Club of the Month. The club who is chosen to be Club of the Month will receive a $50 cash card from the Nebraska 4-H Foundation and their story will be showcased on the Nebraska 4-H Foundation's Facebook, Twitter, and website along with the State 4-H website and Facebook and in their local newspaper. Nomination forms can be found at Completed forms can be ed to ne4hclubofthemonth@gmail.com. YOUTH VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY The Northeast Nebraska Master Gardeners could use your help. They hold an annual Plant Fair & Market at the Northeast Community College Chuck Pohlman Ag Complex in Norfolk and need volunteers to help with getting the patron s items out to their vehicles. Wagons will be available. The plant fair is Friday, April 26, 5:30-9:00 pm and Saturday, April 27, 9:00 am 3:00 pm. Call the Nebraska Extension Office in Madison County at by April 23 to sign up for a time that would work for you. 2

3 RAISE YOUR HAND! The Raise Your Hand campaign, held from April 1 through May 15, is a nationwide call-to-action for 4-H alumni, supporters, and friends to vote for their state to win funding and help more kids in their community benefit from 4-H experiences. The three states with the most hands raised will receive $20K, $10K, and $5K. Last year, Nebraska 4-H, with over 14,000 hands raised, received second place. This year, you can help us reach #1! Raise Your Hand and vote for Nebraska 4-H. Voting is easy, and even if you have raised your hand in the past, your vote will still be counted this year! Raise Your Hand now at TRACTOR SAFETY TRAINING The 2019 Tractor Safety Training is scheduled for June at the Wayne County Fairgrounds. Any youth years of age who work on a farm or ranch other than his/her parents is required to be certified through a tractor safety course. Staff members from the Central States Center for Agricultural Safety and Health specialists will teach the 2-day course. Cost is $60, which includes materials, lunch both days, and snacks at breaks. HORSE SHOW AND JUDGING GUIDE AVAILABLE The updated Horse Show and judging guide is available to order from and we have copies at the Extension Office. It reflects all the changes made for the District and State Horse Shows this year that were outlined in last month s newsletter. TEEN SUPREMES The Teen Supremes will meet May 4, 10:15-11:00 a.m. following the Clover Kid Meeting. We will finalize our summer schedule. STATE FAIR BOOK The State Fair Book is available at 4-H County and State Fair Information. Click the Fair Book-State 4-H Section-2019 link at the bottom of the page. Please note beginning level projects are not listed in the State Fair Book because they are not eligible for State Fair. We will make the online county Fair Book available as soon as possible. 3
