Club of the Month PASE & Life Challenge Nebraska Youth Range Camp Maverick Young Entrepreneur Boot Camp Attention Cat, Dog & Small Animal Exhibitors ID Information LOWER ELKHORN NATURAL RESOURCES DISTRICT 4-H CAMP SCHOLARSHIPS The LENRD will offer scholarships for youth to attend 4-H camps. The scholarships will reimburse each winner for the registration fee of the camp. Applications are available at county4h under the Camps heading and the Extension Office. Applications are due by Friday, May 15 to the LENRD Office in Norfolk. ATTENTION HORSE EXHIBITORS The following are due by 5 PM, May 15. Horse ID s District & State Horse Show entries Horse Advancement Level Testing completed and signed books turned into the Extension Office, along with any needed reports. Remember 4-Hers 11 years of age and older must pass Level 1 by May 15 to be eligible to exhibit at the Fair. The area District 4-H Horse Shows are scheduled for June 16 in Ord, June 17 in Wayne, & June 18 in Seward. There is a 4-H Horse Barrel Racing/Pole Bending Clinic scheduled for May 27 at the Wayne County Fairgrounds. Registration information will be sent to horse project members. MID-YEAR ENROLLMENT DEADLINE Copies of 4-H enrollments were sent to all 4-H leaders and members. If you did not receive your copy, contact the Extension Office immediately. Check your information carefully. Please log into your 4-H Online account to update contact information or to make project additions by midnight, June 1 The website will not allow project changes after this time. See the letter that accompanied your 4-H enrollment information for instructions or contact the Extension Office. This is the last chance for 4-Hers to sign up for the projects they plan to exhibit at the fair. Also, check over project workshops you sign up for to make sure you are enrolled in the correct project. WAYNE COUNTY FAIR PASSES are available at the Extension Office. Volunteers received a postcard in April with details on purchasing half-price passes. BEEF/DAIRY BARN: the Fairboard is looking to upgrade the panels in the beef/dairy barn for the 2015 fair. This would consist of replacing the wooden fence that the dairy and beef tie to with steel panels. If anyone would like to purchase a panel for $100 or make a contribution to the project, please contact Fairboard member, Merlin Felt at or Beef Superintendent, James Felt at Total cost of the project will be about $3500.

2 QUALITY ASSURANCE All 4-Hers enrolled in the market and breeding beef, bucket calf, feeder calf, cow/calf, dairy, dairy goat, meat goat, pygmy goat, market and breeding sheep, swine, rabbit and poultry projects can be certified by attending a class May 27, 1:00 p.m. or 7:00 p.m. at Wayne County Courthouse Courtroom. Youth can also become certified by completing the on-line Quality Assurance Moodle Course at Instructions were included with the March Newsletter or are available at under the Animals heading. Youth choosing to complete the on-line course must complete 3 modules in their age division and have their certificates turned into the Extension Office by June 15. Certificates can be ed, faxed or brought to the office. TRACTOR SAFETY TRAINING The 2015 Tractor Safety Training will be held June at the Fairgrounds. There will need to be at least 8 participants to hold the training. Any youth 14 or 15 years of age who works on a farm or ranch other than his/her parents is required to be certified through a tractor safety course. Extension Educators and field specialists will teach the 2-day courses. Cost is $60, which includes all course materials, lunch both days, and breaks. Registration is requested a week prior to class. For details or to register, contact the Nebraska Extension Office in Dixon County ( ). 4-H POLICY REGARDING MISSED DEADLINES The 4-H Youth Development Program strives to instill responsibility in all 4-H members. Part of the responsibility is making sure that all 4-H deadlines are followed. It is the 4-H Council s role to be consistent and fair to all 4-Hers. Therefore, if a 4-Her contacts the UNL Extension Office after a missed county deadline, the 4-Her will be allowed to participate in county events, contests, etc., but will be ineligible for trophies and advancement to the State Fair. In the case where ID papers are late, we must follow the state deadline so opportunities to participate in events beyond the county are out the 4-H Council s control. SUMMER EDUCATIONAL 4-H EVENTS Check out the enclosed flyer for summer events that are scheduled. Interested persons should contact the Extension Office for a list of responsibilities and an application. PONCA 4-H CAMP INFORMATION Ponca Day Camp Attention 4-Hers ages 8-11! Reserve June 23 on your calendars and plan to attend Ponca Day Camp. Cost is $18.00, which will include activities, swimming and a noon meal. Camp will adjourn at 5:00 p.m. Ponca Day Camp Counselors are needed - Teens should be 14 years of age or older by June 1. Counselor training will take place June 22. Camp registrations and counselor applications are accepted until 5:00 p.m., June 12 at the Nebraska Extension-Dixon County office. Camp registration information is included with this month s newsletter and at Counselor applications are available online at the above address or at the Extension Office. 3 YOUTH RANGE CAMP 4-H FAIR BOOKS The State 4-H Fair Book is online and the Fair Book will be online soon. Check out and click on 4-H. The links are under the County and State Fair Information heading. You will need adobe acrobat on your computer to read the files. NEED A 4-H T-SHIRT? 4-H livestock and small animal exhibitors are required to wear 4-H T-shirts or have a 4-H chevron on a white shirt. The 4-H T-shirts were re-designed in 2011; however 4-H T-shirts purchased in previous years are fine to wear. Cost is $10.00/T-shirt for youth S, M, L and adult S, M, L and XL sizes; 2X and 3X are $ Anyone, including parents and leaders, wanting to order a shirt should contact the Extension Office on or before June 1. 4-H CLUB OF THE MONTH The Nebraska 4-H Foundation and Nebraska 4-H Ambassadors have joined together to start a program which recognizes 4-H clubs throughout the state of Nebraska. Any 4-H club may nominate themselves to be the Club of the Month. Nominations are due the second Friday of the month before the club will be the Club of the Month. The club who is chosen to be Club of the Month will receive a $50 cash card from the Nebraska 4-H Foundation and their story will be showcased on the Nebraska 4-H Foundation s Facebook, Twitter, and website along with the State 4-H website and Facebook and in their local newspaper. Applications are available at PASE & LIFE CHALLENGE The 52nd annual Nebraska Youth Range Camp will be held June 8-12 at the Nebraska State 4-H Camp in Halsey. Eligible students need to be between the ages of that are interested in learning more about natural resource management. Students that attend this camp will be actively involved with field activities, lectures, hand-on experience, recreational leadership and team-building activities that are all led by up to 20 of Nebraska s most respected and dedicated leaders, teachers, and professionals from various agencies, colleges, and universities. Each student will be sent home with a binder that is filled with educational materials. Financial sponsorship is available. MAVERICK YOUNG ENTREPRENEUR BOOT CAMP Source: Kim Pickering UNO s Center for Innovation & Entrepreneurship is hosting the Maverick Young Entrepreneur Boot Camp, designed for students entering 7-10th grades, June 8-12, 2015 at the UNO College of Business Administration. The camp will run from 8:30 AM to 12:30 PM Monday through Friday. Students will learn about innovation and business startups, meet local entrepreneurs, have on-site visits to local startups and lots of hands-on experiential exercises. The cost for the camp is $ per participant. Significant scholarships are available for eligible students. Please note that housing is not provided. Visit to learn more and to register. ATTENTION CAT, DOG & HOUSEHOLD PET EXHIBITORS: Remember - proof of current vaccinations for cats, dogs and ferrets are due with fair entries on July 9 and must be current at that time. 4-Hers 10 years and older interested in participating in the state Livestock Judging or Life Challenge contests should contact the Extension office by June 8. 3

4 ID INFORMATION All animals (except dog, cat, small animals and poultry) shown at the county fair must be identified on a 4-H identification form (affidavit). Make sure forms are filled out completely. No information will be taken over the phone. The deadlines will be enforced. Animal Deadline Bucket Calf May 1 Horse May 15 Market Swine May 15 Market and Breeding Sheep May 28 Meat Goats May 28 Breeding Beef, Cow/Calf Pairs, Feeder Calf, Dairy, Goats, Rabbits June 15 Ak-Sar-Ben & State Fair-Market Meat Goats, Sheep and Swine June 15 Meat Goats will be weighed and tagged on May 28, 5:30 p.m. at the Fairgrounds. All meat goats, both market and breeding, must be tagged. No tags can be taken home. Breeding goats will not be weighed, but tagged. Tags are $1.00 each. All Meat Goats must be tagged and does must have a USDA Scrapies tag. Sheep will be weighed and tagged May 28, 6:00-7:30 p.m. at the Fairgrounds. All sheep, both market and breeding, must be tagged. No tags can be taken home. Breeding sheep will not be weighed, but tagged. Mark RETURN beside any yearling that was exhibited in the breeding lamb class in 2014 to be eligible for increased premiums. USDA Scrapies identification is required for market and breeding ewes and the tag number must be written on the ID forms. Wethers do not need the Scrapies identification. Market Animals (market goats, sheep, swine) exhibited at Ak-Sar-Ben and State Fair must have a DNA sample on file. Cost is $6.00 per sample. Ak-Sar-Ben also requires a DNA sample for Feeder Calves. Cost is $6.00 per sample. DNA samples are due with the ID sheets on June 15. Cow/Calf Pairs - include ear tag number of calf as well as cow, age of cow, sex of calf and birth date of calf. Reminder to 4-Hers 11 years of age and older: The calf must be also ID d as either a breeding heifer or feeder calf. Breeding Beef and Cow/Calf Pairs - indicate home raised, county raised and return animals on the ID form. A cow shown as a breeding heifer at the 2014 county fair is eligible for increased premiums if noted as return on the 2015 ID form. All other cows are ineligible for the increased premiums. Bucket Calves and Feeder Calves need to be tagged with a 4-H ear tag. Tags can be purchased from the Extension Office for $1.00 each. Tagging needs to be done prior to the ID deadline. 4-H Rabbits - ID on County ID form and 3 close range photos (left side, right side, front view) or tattoo. Rabbits exhibited at the State Fair must be tattooed and identified on the State ID form New for 2015: All animals (except Dairy and Horse) must complete an online affidavit to be eligible for State Fair and Ak-Sar-Ben by midnight June 15. Hard copies are still required for county fair. We will work with the families this affects. 8 Clay Pot Mushroom Workshop Location: 4-H Building, Fairgrounds Date & Time: June 2, 9:00 AM - 12 Noon Cost: 2 pots-$10 or 3 pots-$15 Registration Deadline: May 26 Recommended: All youth who are enrolled in the Design Decisions Project. This project can be exhibited as an outdoor living accessory. Description: Clay pots will be assembled and painted to look like mushrooms. You will be able to make a 3 inch, 6 inch mushroom and/or 10 inch mushroom. Materials needed: Wear paint clothes 4-H Entomology Workshop Location: Ikes Lake, directions given when registering. Date & Time: June 9, 9:00 AM 4:00 PM Cost: $25 Registration Deadline: June 1 Limited to 10 participants Recommended: Youth enrolled in the Entomology project. Description: Learn how to collect, preserve, and identify basic kinds of insects and their lifecycles. Materials needed: Sack lunch, hat, sunscreen, insect repellent and a wide mouth glass jar with straight sides like a pickle jar (No canning jars). Materials provided: Insect pins, display box, labeling materials, and basic ID guide. 4-H Horticulture Contest Location: Rhebb Acreage, Saddle Rd, Norfolk Date & Time: June 10, 7:00 PM Registration Deadline: June 5 Recommended: Youth & Adults Description: The Horticulture Contest consists of plant identification. There will be prizes for first, second and third place finishers & snacks. Information is available at the Extension Office. Materials needed: Insect repellent Beginner EV3 Robotics Workshop Location: Wayne Junior/Senior High School Choose Session 1 OR Session 2 Session 1 Dates & Time: June 10-12, 9:00 AM 12 Noon Session 2 Dates & Time: June 10-12, 1:00 4:00 PM Cost: $15 Registration Deadline: June 1 Limited to 20 participants Recommended: 4-Hers enrolled in any Robotics project will learn about designing, building, and programming an EV3 robot. Description: Learn about robotics and their function. Write a pseudo code which includes at least one sensor activity. Materials Needed: All supplies will be provided. Photography Workshop Location: Pierce County Extension Office Date & Time: June 17, 9 AM - Noon Cost: $5.00 Registration Deadline: Contact the Pierce County Extension Office at No deadline, but once limit is reached the workshop is full. This project can be exhibited as either a simple accessory made with paper. Description: Bright colored paper will be folded, cut and assembled into a three dimensional snowflake. Cat Showmanship Clinic Location: 4-H Building, Fairgrounds Date & Time: June 24, 6:30-8:00 PM Registration Deadline: June 19 Recommended: 4-Hers enrolled in the cat project Description: Learn cat showmanship techniques. Materials Needed: Cats are welcome, but must be brought in a pet carrier and on a collar and leash. Please make sure your cat is current on Rabies, Panleucopenia, Viral Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus, and Feline Leukemia vaccinations. Clover Kid Camp Location: Bressler Park, Wayne Date & Time: June 25, 9-11:30 AM Registration Deadline: June 19 Recommended: Youth ages 5-7 years old by 12/31/14 Description: Youth will learn about the 4-H Program and complete projects they can bring to the Fair. Materials Needed: All supplies will be provided. Food Smart Grant provided by ConAgra Foods Registration Deadline: June 24 Recommended: Individuals 4-H age 8-13 Description: What do you know about basic nutrition, food safety, food preparation and food budgeting? If you are 4-H age 8-13 and answered not much, please plan to join the food smart program to learn more. There will be hands-on activities including food preparation, tasting, and activity breaks.
