Recently Completed Events 4 19 July, 2018 STEM Teachers visit N13 First Stop: Above, Dianne Caspersen, leads the group in hands on activities which emphasize using science in math. Below teachers are tackling the concept of lift using the wind tunnel and creating their own air foil from paper cups. The paper cup is right there! Each teacher placed a personally crafted paper cup in the bottom of the wind tunnel. Participants were judged on how high the cup went and how long it remained suspended in the air.
Recently Completed Events 5 Following Dianne s classroom lecture, and hand s own teaching activities, some of the teachers chose to take a ride in the Gyro-Copter with Ron, or the Cardinal with Lars, (Dianne s Husband). Left Smiles abound as teachers took a spin around the block in Lar s Cardinal airplane. THANK YOU, LARS! On right, two thumbs up for the Gyro-Copter THANK YOU, Ron! THANK YOU Denny! Below, Denny, after showing the engine of the GP-4 he did a demo flight showing the teachers what the engine can do! Regrettably I was not able to get a photo of his amazing low pass. Any guesses why?
STEM Teachers Contd. 6 From Left, John Sibole, Program Mgr., FSDO., followed by our 6 visiting STEM teachers, then, Lars in light bright blue shirt with wife, Dianne to his right, Ron, gyro-copter Pilot, Daryl air traffic controller, and on far right, maroon shirt, Todd from Bloomsburg University who assisted Dr. Kim Bolig with facilitating this event. Thank you for spending time with us at N13! We hope you enjoyed your day! The slide below says: Created the most aerodynamic shape that can fly the highest in the wind tunnel. Use the cone and other materials in front of you.
Recently Completed Events 7 14 July ADSB John Sibole, FAASTeam Program Mgr. Thank you, John! Left and Below, slides from John s recent presentation. Twenty-three pilots participated and stayed for lunch following the presentation. A good opportunity to share knowledge and experiences.
Do you have a story to share? 8 Everyone enjoys hangar flying, where pilots share stories about their flying experiences and listen to other pilots sharing theirs. Sometimes, these shared experiences prove helpful to others. Like Franklin P. Jones once said, Experience is that marvelous thing that enables you to recognize a mistake when you make it again. Storytelling has created some great debates, but more often than not, they are simply amusing or downright amazing. They likely all start with Let me tell you about the time or Did you know or When that happened to. Well, you are invited to share your favorite stories right here in the Bloomsburg airport newsletter!!! For example, perhaps it s about what made you want to fly, a rating or goal you achieved, buying your first (or umpteenth) airplane, landing at a tower-controlled airport without a clearance or almost landing at the wrong airport entirely, have you ever experienced icing, had an enlightening experience with lightening, a lesson that has left a lasting impression. Share that unforgettable feeling you got during your first solo when for the first time you were all alone flying an airplane. What memories and experiences would you like to share with the readers of this newsletter? You are only limited by all the experiences you ve had. Who knows how helpful they may be to someone else. As a pilot you know you learned to fly with the help of other more experienced pilots who learned to fly that same way too. Chuck Yeager once commented, There s no such thing as a natural-born pilot. We all have someone to thank. Perhaps that s your story to share. Gene Cernan, the last man to walk on the moon said this about experiences, Prepare for the unknown, unexpected and inconceivable.after 50 years of flying I m still learning every time I fly. It can be humorous or serious, short, long, or anywhere in between. Like all hangar flying stories, first-hand experiences will make the most interesting stories to read. You can your story to BJ Teichman, airportcoordinator@bloomsburgpa.org or Dave Ruckle, ruckleds@yahoo.com. Along with your name, please include your contact information. If you have any questions, call BJ at or Dave at So, here s an example. A brief story entitled: Thank goodness for seatbelts After promising my sister more times than I could remember, Vanessa, my wife and I flew to Bellefonte to meet Ronnie and her husband Tom for lunch and a long overdue visit. Although just a few miles northeast of University Park airport at State College, Bellefonte is closer to Tom and Ronnie s home and easier for them to get to. I don t remember where we ate, but it was, as always nice seeing them again. And, as always, we promised one another not to let so much time pass before our next visit. Bellefonte is a small, rural airport nestled at the base of a mountain and nearly in the departure path of east bound aircraft out of University Park. I had been there once before when the
9 airport hosted a fly-in lunch event. It was busy that day with quite a number of planes showing up for Sloppy Joes, the main course. However, on this visit, we found the airport very quiet and peaceful, probably the normal. After the departing hugs and kisses, Vanessa and I climbed into N42JV, our 1980 F33A Bonanza and prepared to head east. When you ve done it enough times, you virtually have the pre-flight checklist memorized. Still to this day, I swear I checked the door. The calm wind situation made it possible to depart on runway 07, which was the direction of our flight. The plan was to climb to a safe altitude before crossing the mountain tops to our south before again turning east. However, no sooner was the gear tucked away and I was about to say something to my co-pilot, that a very loud, very static-like noise come rushing through my headset. Thinking the batteries died, I took a quick look at the volume control, only to see the familiar green light indicating that wasn t the problem. As I started to reach for the squelch control on the radio, I glanced at Vanessa and saw her shaking her head with her hands cupped over the ear muffs of her headset. It was then I saw it, but immediately hesitated to make her aware of the problem not knowing what her reaction would be. It was too late. Apparently, she saw me looking past her. Sure enough, she turned to see what had my attention. Suddenly, a face filled with shear panic spun in my direction along with her whole body that was only restrained from being in my lap by the seatbelt that wrapped around her waist and across her shoulders. I had experienced just such an event during my student pilot days and once again in Craig Lawler s Bonanza as we departed from the Reading airport. But Vanessa had not! I could only imagine the thoughts that must have been racing through her mind. Once she realized she was not going to get sucked out of the airplane and as hard as she tried was not going to pull the door shut, she settled down into a controlled panic mode. By shouting into the mic, I let her know I was going to land at Lock Haven where we would then be able to shut the door. From that point on she still favored the left side of her seat as she clung to the strap that secured her in place. We landed, secured the door and from there made an uneventful trip the rest of the way home to Bloomsburg. Now whenever we prepare to depart we give the hatch a good solid tug and listen very carefully for the audible click sound of the door when it latches. But just in case, I also check to make sure her seatbelt is snuggly fastened too. There s no doubt in my mind it saved the day on that trip from Bellefonte, keeping Vanessa out of my lap. Submitted by Dave Ruckle Photo on right, Vanessa, and Dave Ruckle with their Bonanza
