EAA Vintage Chapter 25 May 2017 Newsletter PRESIDENT'S REPORT Hey Gang: A lot is going on in May! The first major activity is a Young Eagle Rally at Little River Airport put on by our North Coast branch of our Chapter and YE Coordinator Red Hamilton, scheduled for Saturday, May 6, This year I plan to fly YEs there with Red and our North Coast fellow members. I encourage my fellow Valley Chapter members and DGA members to do the same! I checked with Red & Marilyn and they indicated all are welcome however, there may not be that many YEs to fly. But they indicated company would be welcome. It's a lovely area to fly in so come on out. The next item on our activities list is happening the next day on Sunday, May 7, 2017! Another YE Rally at KSAC, sponsored by Chapter 25s Valley Branch & DGA Aviation. The required pilot briefing, YE safety and flight briefing start at 8:00am. The pilot briefing takes place in the pilots lounge and the upstairs conference room will be used for the YE safety and flight previews. YE Flights begin at 9:00am with a flight each hour. There is a hour break for lunch then Flights begin again at 1:00pm and ending at 3 or 4pm. Estaban Nava is our yeoman super Young Eagle scheduler and organizer. He and his team have things organized to perfection. He is committed to disadvantage youth in the Sacramento area as a coach and community organizer. An absolutely gifted promoter for youth. Estaban says we have a full roster of young people. We have 12 pilots and planes. If we have 5 Flights that's 60. But with four place planes we can fly two Eagles per plane.

On Saturday, May 13th is our Chapter meeting date which will take place at Alta Sierra Residential Air Park at Bob Opdahl's home and Hangar. It's a beautiful location and alway fun. Let's make an effort to have a great turnout! Then on Saturday, May 20th DGA Aviation is having a fly out to Quincy Airport for Brunch. All Chapter Members are welcome to join in on the fun. Please contact me or Nick Leonard for details on times and gathering points. My number is Nick's I still have 4 rooms available at the University of Wisconsin, Oshkosh for AirVenture. Let me know if you are interested. After June 15th they will be gone if not used. The rooms are typical dorm rooms with two single beds with showers and bath rooms down the hall with one set of male and female facilities on each floor. The rate per room double occupancy is $ Also, 4 of the DGA members are going a week early to volunteer at the Kermit Weeks Museum. A secondary reason for going early is that we are also transporting Ryan Ioanidis who The Chapter and DGA Aviation are sponsoring for the 16 year old AirVenture AirCamp which is occurring the week before AirVenture. Ryan Ioanidis is our Treasurer Kim Owens's 16 year son. The Chapters YE credits were used to help pay for Ryan's tuition! DGA's YE Foundation funds will pay the balance. Ryan soloed on his 16th birthday at Sacramento Executive Airport on June 16, He is a straight A student. An accomplished athlete as a distance runner. He is attempting to get an appointment from our local congressman to attend the Air Force Academy. He will be helping with the flying and navigation with his mom Kim Owen in Kim's Beautiful S35 Bonanza while flying to Oshkosh! Let's Do Some Flying for enjoyment and to keep our skills sharp! Stan SECRETARY'S REPORT The first meeting of 2017 the members were blessed with fine weather and met up for a visit to the California Air Museum at McClellan. Lunch afterwards at the O Club at Lions Gate, the former Officers Club, was well attended. A great deal of visiting over an enjoyable lunch allowed me to collect some bits of news from our friends and members, including a look at Thad Shelnutt s photos of the smashed hangar at Clarksburg under which a friend s Piper Cub was damaged, while Thad s Funks adjacent were not. Thad s Funks are no longer his, as ownership has transferred and they will move to McClellan.

Meeting attendance Jim Jordan, Al Redd, Red Hamilton, Marilyn Boese, Herb Plucker, Nick Leonard, Bill Brooks, Thom McConnell, Thad Shelnutt, Joan Shelnutt, Jackson O Sullivan, Bob Opdahl, Harry Ansorge, Stan Lawrence, Michele Lawrence. Some of the pilots who flew in had a nice long walk to the Museum, others caught a ride. We should have our phone contacts available for future, there were lots of folks who drove in and gave rides between the Museum and O Club. President Stan announced that the Chapter has received its Young Eagle Credit Letter for flights in 2016, to be used in 2017 a credit of $590 that we all agree should be used for Ryan Ioanidis attendance at Air Academy Stan is organizing a small group to fly to Oshkosh early and volunteer as needed, and stay in the Dorms. Everyone is invited. Herb Plucker suggested members might enjoy the French Aerobatic Team Demonstration Program at Mather on April 15 Jim Jordan has sent ticket

information for this out to members separately. Also announced was Travis Open House May 5-6. Al Redd shared his unique humor and wisdom, and apparently he still has not had the sense to retire so he was on his lunch break from A&P work at CalFire nearby. Al offered to arrange a tour for the Chapter of the Reach/CalStar repair facility at McClellan when we have an opening in our schedule. It was great to see all of you and we extend a warm welcome to our new members and thank you all for coming out. Your (once again) Secretary, Marilyn TREASURER'S REPORT All is well here, but pretty quiet on the "Treasurer's" desk! We did have one more renewal this last month! Here is April's Report. April 2017 Balance as of March 2017 $ Income Dues/Donations $ 15.00* Total Income $ Expenses Total Expenses $ 0.00 Balance as of April 2017 $1, Respectfully submitted Kim

I took my Doctor a "BasicMed Physician's Guide" available on the AOPA BasicMed website. I had also completed Section 2 of the BasicMed Comprehensive Medical Examination Checklist using the online Adobe PDF form completion software, so my form was legible and easy to read. When I got home from the Doctor's office, I took the AOPA Medical Self- Assessment Course. At best, I am methodical, so it takes me longer than average to do most projects. From the time I created an account on the AOPA BasicMed website until I was printing my Medical Self-Assessment Completion Certificate it took me four hours and fifteen minutes. This included taking the AOPA Air Safety Foundation course "Aging Gracefully," which was one of the links in the Self-Assessment course. I had the mindset that I would finish way ahead of the two hours required for the course. This mindset came from the Flight Instructor Refresher Course (I take every two years), which always takes a lot less time to read than the time

required to be online. It turns out the BasicMed Self-Assessment Course will surely take the full two hours without taking a lot of notes (I had ten pages) or doing any extra courses. The quizzes for both course required you to use good logic and remember some of the key points. The Self-Assessment course has 20 multiple choice / true and false questions. Jim
