Sherry and I were pleased to host the burger and dog cook out. After the eating was done, Don Whitehair from Leading Edge Planes and Props in Stevensville gave a great explanation on the care of propeller blades, how propellers are designated, and how the care of a prop can affect performance. He also told us about his big blue bar and how most pilots don t want to see how it is used on their propeller. There were lots of questions and Don ended up talking much longer than he d planned. Oh, I have slipped the surly bonds of earth and danced the sky on laughter-silvered wings; KitFox Update: We did place the donated airplane up for auction on ebay in August. We received no bids, so we are still owners. The Board of Directors met on September 10, 2004, to discuss our next move. We decided to try ebay one more time, and if the airplane doesn t sell this time, we will revert to Plan B, which is to raffle the airplane. If we use that option, I will provide details next month. We will have a page for the KitFox until we have it sold or raffled off. Don Lorenzen has taken the lead on the website for now. Hov ring there, Member Action: MEMBERS URGED TO OPPOSE NEW HOUSE BILL THAT WOULD SEVERELY RESTRICT GENERAL AVIATION The Experimental Aircraft Association is urging its members and all aviation enthusiasts to contact their Congressional representatives and strongly oppose a newly introduced bill by Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-N.Y.) This bill (H.R. 5035) would require the Department of Homeland Security to create a method of screening all passengers and property on each flight of all passenger aircraft in the U.S., including general aviation aircraft

It would also prohibit any non-airline aircraft from flying within 1,500 feet of any structure or building, and prohibit non-airline aircraft from flying over any U.S. city with a population of 1 million or more. It would further require that pilots of all aircraft in U.S. airspace remain in contact with the Federal Aviation Administration, presumably by radio, regardless of altitude or location. I ve chased the shouting wind along, and flung my eager craft through footless halls of air. Member Information: SPORT PILOT: WHEN S IT HAPPENING? The new sport pilot/light-sport aircraft rule is officially effective as of Sept. 1, 2004, but it is a rolling implementation. That means that various portions of the rule will become effective over the six months leading to March 1, 2005, as the infrastructure to support sport pilots is set. Produced with EAA Television, the hour-long special features highlights of the 52nd annual event held July 27-August 2 at Wittman Regional Airport in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Included are features about Mike Melville, pilot of SpaceShipOne and the first private astronaut; Bruce Bohannon s attempt to break the 1946 altitude record for a piston-driven airplane; the arrival of the Very Light Jet pioneered by Eclipse Aviation; and stunning performances by some of the world s top aerobatics teams, and more. Up, up the long, delirious burning blue I ve topped the windswept heights with easy grace Christmas Party: Please mark your calendar. The Chapter Christmas Party will be Friday, December 3, 2004 at the Grant Creek Inn. As we did in 2002, we will have a catered buffet with three entrees with fixin s. We will also have the white elephant gift for exchange with other members, so collect your really good stuff for this event. Where never lark, or even eagle flew. And, while with silent, lifting mind I ve trod Polson Fly-In: Some of us went to the Polson Fly-In and Steak Fondue event on August 2st after our breakfast. There were several neat aircraft and we were pleasantly surprised that Mike Melville from the SpaceShipOne program was in attendance and did a brief talk about his flight and appointment as the first non-government Astronaut. Mike had flown the Long EZ he flew around the world up for the fly-in. The high untrespassed sanctity of space, put out my hand and touched the face of God. 3 Page 3 Prop Wash Member Events: This coming weekend (Sep 18/19, 2004) we have members doing a couple of different things. One group, led by Bob Brunson, will be working as volunteers at the Reno Air Races. Another group is trekking over to Seattle for a Mariners baseball game and museum touring. We will expect a full report at the Chapter meeting Monday. The most beautiful dream that has haunted the heart of man since Icarus is today reality. Louis Bleriot Breakfast at the Airport: Saturday, September 25, 2004, is the monthly EAA Chapter 517 September Breakfast at the Airport. Breakfast will be served from 0800 until 1100 hours at the Chapter hangar at the Stevensville Airport. The question is: Will we do this with the hangar door open or closed??? When once you have tasted flight, you will forever walk the earth with your eyes turned skyward, for there you have been, and there you will always long to return. Leonardo da Vinci Call for Newsletter Bits: I invite all readers to please consider submitting tidbits to be included in Chapter 517 s monthly newsletter. Those of you who regularly fly out often come back with great stories and pictures. Please write up a paragraph or two and feel free to include pictures. For those of you with other Chapters, if you have an event coming up, please feel free to submit something we can include in our newsletter the month before. Please try to have submissions to us by the 2 nd Friday of the month if we are to work it in. You may send them to me or Frank Tremper, the newsletter Editor. Pilots take no special joy in walking. Pilots like flying. Neil Armstrong AVIATION YOUTH ACADEMY 2004 by Sherry Rossiter, Event Coordinator During the weeks of July and July 19-23, our chapter conducted our annual Aviation Youth Academy. (This event was formerly referred to as Aviation Day Camp, but our Board of Directors voted to change the name to Aviation Youth Academy in order to convey the idea of a more formal curriculum and approach.) The first week of the Academy was exclusively for children in a consortium of school districts outside of Missoula. This was the fourth and final year of a federal grant allowing these children to attend this event. In the past we have had close to 30 children during this week, but this year we had 20. The second week of the Academy was for children in the Missoula county schools. Due to two children dropping out at the last minute, we ended up with 22 kids the second week. However, the smaller numbers worked out much better from a logistical standpoint and validated what we already knew that smaller class size produced a more meaningful experience for the children attending. Our chief instructor this year was Karin Flint, a credentialed teacher at Meadow Hill School in Missoula. Karin brought added technology, fresh ideas, and new energy to the program. Karin was assisted by me and two helpers provided by the Clinton School District the first week. The second week Karin was assisted in the classroom each day by Marge Purdy and me.

4 Page 4 Other Academy support staff included several members of EAA Chapter 517: Zane Rebenstorff, Don Lorenzen, Frank Tremper, Greg Lee, Don Eichols. Zane and Don Lorenzen each taught a section of the curriculum and Frank and Greg provided technical assistance in setting up the computer s imulators. Greg also donated a used personal computer and a simulation program to EAA Chapter 517 just in time for the Youth Academies. That meant we were able to have four simulators up and running during each session. And Don Eichols did what he does best raise money for the Youth Academy! In addition, the following EAA Chapter 517 members provided the Young Eagles airplane flights for the Youth Academy kids each Friday: Rick Booth; Hank Butzel; Frank Bretz; Jeff Miller; Gary Matson; Gary Weyermann; and Bill Woodford. A GREAT BIG THANK YOU to everyone who provided assistance with this event. It is a huge undertaking that requires many dedicated volunteers. Dates for the 2005 Aviation Youth Academy are July and July Karin Flint has agreed to be the chief instructor again next year. However, I will be stepping down as the event coordinator, so this is a good opportunity for somebody with good organization skills and a passion for aviation education to take this task over. In the past, the Aviation Youth Academy coordinator has handled all the publicity and registration, purchased supplies, arranged for (and often delivered) the daily lunches, and assisted daily in the classroom. This is way too much for any one individual to do. It is not too early to make it known to the Board if you are willing to help with this wonderful summer youth opportunity.

5 Page 5 Prop Wash The Boys and Girls Club Receved Young Eagle Rides Too! YOUNG EAGLES - Sat, October 2nd from 9:30-12 we ll be holding YE flights at the MMF (Museum of Mtn Flying). This will be a special event. Special because we ll be hosting approximately 20 kids of soldiers recently deployed to the Gulf. We ll be taking digital photos for the kids to mail to their parents. We ll need to extra ground support for this event, please call Don ( ) to volunteer. It s always special to host kids; our group does such a super job! Let s really do it up right for all the kids!
