Minutes of December Meeting The OMFC December meeting was called to order by President Aldo Agostini at 7:40 pm on Monday, December 5th, with thirty-three members present. The first item on the agenda was the review of our 2017 event dates. These can always be found on the last page of the newsletter. Also reviewed were the executive appointments made for throttle via radio control. In his talk he emphasized the importance of balancing fuel and flight efficiency with the weight of the craft. Aldo then welcomed our guest for the evening, Doug Blackmore of the Balsa Beavers Model Flying Club. The Beavers are one of the last clubs dedicated to Control-line model flying, and Doug s presentation dealt with his recent record breaking Controlline endurance flight using a scratch build model plane. Their flight duration was 2 hours, 26 minutes and 56 seconds, during which Doug flew the plane on control lines and his son Daniel operated the The model was powered by an OS.15LA two-stroke engine, and had a four pound launch weight, more than half of which was the weight of the fuel. The rules specified that the fuel tank(s) had to be enclosed in a box the was part of the fuselage, so Doug designed his model to carry three tanks two 16 oz main tanks and a 6 oz header tank. The rules also required a normal wheeled take-off and landing, so Doug had designed and built five inch ultralight wheels to handle the rough runway at the Balsa Beavers field. A lot of the design work centered around getting every last drop of fuel out of the tanks, and also

3 OMFC Fliteline 3 having the model fly as efficiently as possible for the length of the lines used. jackpot winner yet! Maybe in the New Year We had one model on display Roger Young brought his fantastic 1/3 scale Bowers Fly Baby. All in all, it was a fascinating talk Doug s attention to detail, both in the design and execution phases, was amazing, but that is what s required when you re chasing a record. Every detail needs to be explored and fully optimized!! Doug encouraged our members to visit the Balsa Beavers website to see videos of the event. After the talk ended, Roger thanked Doug for his presentation this evening. As a bonus, Doug stayed during our break, and fielded a great many questions from interested members. Just before the customary break, Aldo handed out some more Fun Awards, to Terry Sears (The Set-up Guy, (at flight school)), to Bill Funnell (the Perfect Cut), and to Mike McDermott (The Master Builder). Mike in turn gave the Beauty Contest Best of Show plaque to Tim Deel, as he was the 2016 winner. Aldo mentioned a Transport Canada website that will contain the most recent Drone regulations: A discussion then ensued where both sides of the drone/rotary wing question were presented. Some members felt that as a club we must be more accepting of rotary wing craft or we may face declining membership. Other members felt that it is impossible for fixed-wing and rotary-wing craft to share the flying field at the same time. During the

4 OMFC Fliteline 4 discussion, the following proposed Standing Resolution was presented, moved by Frank Pilih and seconded by Percy Ford-Smith: At no time will rotary wing and fixed wing models fly at the same time Frank felt that there was a serious safety issue here, with danger to both to flyers and aircraft. A very lively and at times impassioned discussion ensued. At one point an amendment was suggested but not moved or seconded : No rotary wing models will fly with a fixed wing model in the same airspace. Some other recommendations were: to create a separate rotary wing area at the field and include a rotary wing training programme. Since the discussion could have carried well into the night, it was decided that further action/debate be deferred till the next meeting. In the meantime other clubs in the area will be canvassed to determine how they are dealing with the issues. Other topics that found their way into the rotary/ fixed wing discussion but were not directly related to it included looking into which frequencies required licencing, and revisiting the updating of the club s frequency board and possibly moving it outside of the shed. These topics were all related to FPV flying and the frequency requirements/ possibilities of the related video feedback systems. It should be noted that there are now at least six frequency bands available to R/C flying machines. Summer 2016
