1 OMFC Fliteline The Newsletter of the Oakville Milton Flying Club February 2008 position keeps deteriorating..enough said! February Meeting As usual, Prez Don opened up the meeting gavel in hand and thanked the good crowd for coming... obviously, there was no Leaf game on tonight! Our Social Director, Jack Devito, was not in attendance laying prone on a beach at Sandals in Jamaica, so it s help yourself night to coffee and donuts...just put your money in the box please. We had a new member in attendance and Chris White introduced himself. Welcome to OMFC Chris! Don said he appreciated the comments in the January Fliteline relating to the MAAC and OMFC rules issues and hoped members would take the message to heart. The fact that our insurance costs are rising means that, as a Club, we must be very vigilant about following Club and MAAC rules. He reiterated that OMFC has been claims free and that s the way we want it to stay! Imagine what would happen if we lost our insurance...we would all be toast and that could happen if the claims Don handed over to Percy Ford-Smith to talk about his ideas for a Club membership book. Percy feels that a Club roster identifying all members and their specific skills will be a great tool, plus it will help to unify the Club a little better. We could all then seek out those members that could help us develop within the hobby to deal with problems and issues we may have. Right now, Percy is looking to create a phone committee; he needs the help of a few volunteers willing to phone Club members and obtain the specific member details to put into the Club roster. He will leave his sheet on the front desk and asks that volunteers sign up during the coffee break. Percy also wondered out loud if we should consider harnessing the wives. Harness the wives????...you can just imagine the cheers, jeers and comments that erupted with that remark.all of em unprintable! Brian Anderson suggested to Percy that he get a hands up volunteer call before the coffee break while it is still fresh in members minds but that request sort of got lost with a question from the floor about using for collecting the member information. It could be one way said Percy but remember we have a lot of members without capability. Percy then turned to the Hints and Kinks idea and again asked members to send in any ideas to him or to the Editor of Fliteline. Percy already has one tip. Ammonia is great for bending balsa wood, put some on.wait a while and it will bend very easily. Percy also advised members with Futaba FAST radios
2 OMFC Fliteline Page 2 that there has been some form of recall. Appears the transmitters may all be transmitting on one frequency, so take them back to where you purchased the radios as soon as possible!!! North Field! At this point, a new person walked in...sheldon Sheppard with his grandson..welcome! Mark Auger was given the floor. He had a couple of great looking foam and coreplast models with him. One was a WW1 Albatross fighter and the other a WW11 Russian MIG fighter. Wingspans are about 3 and both were powered by.25 cc two stroke engines [see photos]. Mark advised that the models were for combat flying and he got the idea from the guys at the Humber Flying Club. The bodies are constructed from pink foam and some are wrapped in coreplast [on the WW1 fighter, the engine compartment was made from coreplast and is essentially wrapped around the foam body]. Most of the wings seemed to be made of coreplast alone with the help of a center wooden wing spar [for those of you that may not have heard about coreplast...it s like corrugated cardboard, only made of a plastic type product]. Mark is hoping to form a body of members who can get together to build and fly the combat aircraft. He says they take no time to make, are very strong and are a blast to fly! He is willing to share his knowledge and plans/ templates. He gets the pink foam from any builders store and the coreplast comes in large sheets from G.E. Polymer Plastics in Brampton. When asked about the building and flying merits of a WW1 model versus a WW11 model, Mark suggests the WW1 model may be a bit easier, but they both present challenges. The coreplast is virtually indestructible but relatively light and creates great models. Someone asked if engine size was mandated and Mark said that the engine sizes range from.20cc to.35cc..people are not overly fussy about engine size. Mark s phone # is so go on, give him a call. You will learn a lot and have great fun doing it!! great for tuning twin engines. Paul then proceeds to pull out a hand held wind meter, complete with spinning vanes all in a gadget not much bigger than a candy bar [Hobby Lobby product]. Lastly from FMA Direct, a Servo Lab product that enables you to plug in your servos and check them out. It will trim, center and cycle your servos, all for around $30.00 he says. Paul must be an electronics nut who seeks this stuff out great stuff Paul! Many thanks.and keep it up! Prez Don then handed the floor to new member Paul Gunther.. this guy should be known as Dr. Gadget. He opens up a small briefcase and proceeds to pull electronics out. First comes an AC/DC voltmeter with plastic type jaws instead of the usual wires, and he has another gadget that allows you to plug an appliance into it so that you can see the electricity feeding habits of your appliances [this stuff from Princess Auto]. Next up is a laser gun that you aim at something, pull the trigger and it tells you the temperature of the object..easy to tell the operating temperature of your engines...should be
3 OMFC Fliteline Page 3 Well, that s about it for the meeting says Don..time for the raffle! We had some balance lead weights, pliers, ball headed socket wrenches, a screw driver set and a couple of glow plugs PLUS a Park Flyer foam ME 109 kit donated to the Club by John McNicol [again!]..many, many thanks John! Bob Zak asked for volunteers again for the Mall Shows and placed volunteer sheets up front...please help out! After the coffee break, we had a video fun fest. Michael Phelps had his portable film unit showing the RCTV presentation of OMFC s last year s film show, plus a short video clip taken at last year s Kitchener Waterloo Air Show. The evening was then set off with some new crash videos which we think were filmed in Germany..the aircraft were huge.jets and all..it made us laugh and it made you want to cry. Thanks Michael!! Meeting closed. Executive Meeting There was not much to discuss at this meeting.the main item of interest was Prez Don s separated shoulder. Seems he tripped outside his house on his front step, catching his bottom on a large and nasty concrete flower pot then bounced onto a cast iron and wood bench which he managed to move 6 feet with his shoulder. Don said it s a good job he did not hit the bench with his head as it would probably have destroyed the bench. Don did offer to show us the purple and blue bruises on his butt.but we all took a pass on that sight! The only other concrete items to report are:- Percy needs a few more volunteers for his phone group to call members for the Club roster...come on guys.please phone We have a speaker for the April 7th meeting. Roy Brown was a tail gunner in a Halifax WW11 bomber. He got shot down and had some interesting experiences with the help of resistance fighters escaping...should be very interesting. Odds and Sods All of us need work space and tables, and yours truly has been very envious of John McNicol s model building tables for some time. So recently, I asked John if he would help me essentially copy his design and help me build four tables around the walls of one of my basement rooms. The plan [John s idea] was to build four linked tables. The tables are constructed of 5/8ths plywood surrounded by 1 x 3 finished poplar. Supporting the plywood is 1 x 1 finished pine framing. The plywood is recessed 1/8th to allow for 1/8th finished white prepainted masonite board to drop in! The tables essentially stand on boxes made from the 1 x 3 poplar. Now I did not think the boxes would support the tables but John persisted join the tables, screw them to the walls and they will be very strong...he is right, in fact the longest table [the one under the window in the picture], some 7 feet in length and 20 wide is just dropped in between two tables measuring approximately 30 x 72 without legs.but it is screwed to the wall and other tables...! John s best idea was to make one of the tables [60 x30 ] extend into the room to allow me to work on the front/back and both sides of a model. I am now using the tables and have an 82 wing Mosquito bomber on them which has been a tough project.the flap mechanism is a night mare but I have finally got them working properly. Only the body is nearly complete. Being a twin there is lots more to do. I have included some photos on the next page. I am also working on a similar size German Moskito, which was formerly owned by Philip Soden. This plane is complete and is a real beauty and will be airborne in 2008 [with Philip s help]. pictures in another edition.
4 OMFC Fliteline Page 4 Here is an approximate schematic of the table layout. The tables are wall to wall, covering an area of approx 9 x 12. Closing Comments We have received notices from other clubs advising us of Swap Meets and Rally s, and a flyer re: the MAAC Scale Nationals. Please see these on page 6. View thru nose cone
