In November and December you tell yourself ah we have a lot of winter left, I will start on the project next week. When you get into January, time moves even faster and you better get it in gear, brother! We just completed one great year, and look forward to the new year of events, camaraderie and flying, especially our newly completed projects. We finished 2010 with one of the best Christmas auctions we have ever had. We also finished 2010 without any major safety issues and that is the most important accomplishment. Building on the foundation of safety, we need to continue to keep it first in our activities. We all have a responsibility to the safety of others and ourselves, no matter at our field, the local park or behind the house. THINK SAFE, BE SAFE, ACT SAFE. We have a fantastic opportunity to have David Scott Owner and Chief Instructor of the 1 st U.S. Flight School give a presentation at our January meeting. David brings years of experience, thousands of flights, and the best methods and practices for developing your flying skills. His website is David encourages you to bring your questions and he loves the interaction, so don t be shy. I would like to incorporate his training techniques into our flight assistance program. The club will also be adding his series of instructional books to our library. So don t miss out next regular meeting on January 25 th, We have a great year scheduled and you don t want to miss any of it. Make sure you watch your , attend monthly meetings and make it out to the field. FUN is also at the center of all our activities, so let us make this year something to remember. 8 Hints Information Tips and Stuff Larry Dudkowski This is the first tip I d like to get out to everyone before the outdoor season goes into full swing. It has to do with our starting benches. Actually it s about keeping those rascals in good shape during the flying season. I ve always felt that an ounce of prevention is always worth more than a pound of cure. So with that in mind I ll start with my first TIP of I ve been noticing that our new benches have been taking some abuse from spilled fuel. If you ve used the benches at all, I m not telling you something new. I m sure we probably have been spilling fuel on the grass all along too. It just wasn t as noticeable, at least until the grass died. Here s an idea that will keep that over flowed fuel from going just anywhere. What you need is a Catch Can. I got this idea from watching NASCAR. During a race when the pit crew is refueling a car, one of the pit crew members places a Catch Can into the gas tank filler overflow. As the name implies the Catch Can catches any gas that comes out of the tank if it overflows while being filled. The Catch Can keeps the gas from spilling on the ground, and coming in contact with hot exhaust, and exposing the pit crew to a fire risk. For my Catch Can I use an old 4 oz fuel tank. The size really isn t important as any size will do. For your Catch Can you need a fuel tank that still has the clunk installed. You probably have one sitting on your bench or in your parts box somewhere. If not, you can always pick one up at a swap meet for about a buck. Here s how to use it. When fueling your model, connect the model s pressure line, the one that goes to the muffler pressure tap into the Catch Can. You want to connect this line to the line that goes to the clunk in the Catch Can. Fuel your aircraft as usual. When you see the fuel going into the Catch Can your aircraft s tank is full. Stop fueling. To empty the Catch Can just reverse the fuel pump so that it sucks the fuel back into the gallon. Stop when the catch can is empty. Your model s fuel tank is now full, the Catch Can is empty and there s no spilled fuel on the grass or bench On fastening; one of the most useful products I have found in this hobby is Loctite. I use it on just about every nut and bolt or threaded combination on my models. For fiberglass or metal engine mounts I drill and tap the mount. I then add a drop of Loctite and use cap screws with lock washers to attach the engine. On profile models, where the engine is mounted to the fuselage, I use lock washers with lock nuts (the kind with a nylon insert in the nut). Again, I add a drop of Loctite to the screws before attaching the washers and nuts. I ve found that you can pick up Loctite in the automotive sections of most stores. One note on Loctite, you want the removable type not the permanent type so check the package before you buy and use it. It used to be that BLUE Loctite was the removable one and RED Loctite was the permanent variety. But it s always best to check. While cleaning out my box I came across this little hint from our boy Bob, The Pres. He pointed me to this R/C Universe article on how to make small clamps from PVC pipe. Start with some PVC pipe. It looks like about two-inch diameter PVC pipe. Cut it into one-inch rings. Then cut one side so that it splits the ring. Need more, tension use a thicker ring, need less tension, cut a wider slit in the ring. Need a bigger clamp use a larger diameter chunk of PVC pipe. Check out the link below. Here s a little tip when patching the covering on your model. Round the corners of the patch and it will stay on longer. This works with all brands of covering and it is especially useful when using peal and stick trim sheets. For some reason the rounded corners are less likely to get caught when you re wiping down you model after a day s flying or during normal handling. I ve used this little trick for quite a while now and haven t lost a patch yet. Welcome everyone to Let s all have a great, Fun and Safe year. FLY SMART, FLY SAFE. Larry Dudkowski
