AMA CHARTER CLUB #397 NAPERVILLE, ILLINOIS APRIL, 2017 Hi Guys, as I write this, we just finished our first fun fly of the year. We did the washer drop. The weather could have been a little better, a little cold for some. The flying was good, wind not bad. We could have had a better turnout maybe next month. We flew at our new flight station locations. They have worked out well. As with all new things, it will take a little time to get used to. I would like to thank Bruce Haynes and Jeff Gittelman for their help moving the pavers we use for the flight stations. There have been several flyers with new airplanes doing maidens the last few days. It has been good to see that all of them have asked someone to look over their new airplanes. It is also nice to see that so far they have been built very well and ready to fly. I would like to ask all of us, when flying something new or rebuilt to have someone look over your work. It s the safest thing to do. The field looks as good as could be expected for this time of the year. The Forest Preserve will be applying wood preserver to our start stands at no cost to the club. We will be getting some more dirt delivered to the field to go around the runway. They will also supply seed and we have to spread the dirt. We will need a club work day to get this done. Lots of hands make short work. I will send out a blast when this will happen. Training will start the end of the month. As in the past, we will be out on Tuesday and Thursday starting around 3:00 PM and going until dusk. If you need help or know someone who does, come on out; we are always ready to help. As always, Fly Safe PRES Tommy

Fun Fly Committee 2017 Winter Build Contest Results We had a great turnout at the monthly meeting for the Winter Build Contest. There were 26 members and guests, and 16 models were submitted for the contest and Show-n-Tell. The winners in the Kit category were: Bill Hickey 1 St Place Simla ; Bruce Haynes 2 nd Place Skybolt ; Jeff Gittelman 3 rd Place Fun 51. The winners in the ARF category were: Dave Cotton Hangar Nine Piper Cub and Dave Engel PT17 tied for 1 st Place, and Dan Nosek 3 rd Place Spitfire. Best of Show was Bill Hickey s Simla a gorgeously finished model. Many thanks to all for participating!!! Jeff Gittelman for the Fun Fly Committee Fun-Fly #1 April 2, 2017 Washer Drop Report The Washer Drop Fun Fly today was a success!! Even though it was mostly cloudy and the winds were 10 M.P.H. from the south there were 14 pilots in attendance. The best performance of the day was by Bob Mosinski who landed his washer only 3 feet from the X on the runway. The furthest distance was over 100 feet it s an easy maneuver but does require some practice in both flying over the runway and timing the release of the washer. I believe everyone had some type of release mechanism, which are easy to add to your plane and easier to operate then performing a roll or loop. Today s winners in the Expert category were: 1 st Bob Mosinski, 2 nd Dave Carlson, and 3 rd Tom Camp. Today s winners in the Advanced category were: 1 st Jeff Gittelman, 2 nd Bruce Haynes, and 3 rd Bill Hickey. Today s winners in the Novice category were: 1 st Jim Farina, 2 nd Mark Froelich, and 3 rd Bill Froelich. Thanks to all who joined us today. We look forward to seeing you next month! Jeff Gittelman for the Fun Fly Committee Fun-Fly #2 April 30, 2017 Whiffle Ball Spot Landing The event this month is the Whiffle Ball Spot Landing. The date of the event is Sunday April 30th with the Rain- Out-Date on the following Sunday May 7 th. Please sign in when you arrive and get your supplies from the Fun-Fly Committee. Competition will start as soon as the pilots are ready, approximately 10:00am. Everyone who attends will receive ten attendance points. Everyone who flies will also receive ten participation points. Here s how it works. Each pilot will be given a Whiffle ball and a 12 foot piece of kite string. He will then attach the ball to his aircraft so that the ball hangs from the string. He will then take off and when he s ready, attempt to touch the ball on the target marked on the runway. He will be allowed up to three attempts and we will score his closest distance from the mark per the pilot s choice. Please Note: Do not attach the string to the tail of you model. This will make it tail heavy and very difficult to control. Read CRASH here

Fun Fly Committee Rules: Distance will be measured from where the ball touched to the target X. The shortest of the three attempts will be the pilot s score. Scoring: The pilot with the lowest total distance from the target will be the winner. Next lowest distance closest will be second, etc. The first five places in each pilot class will be awarded finishing points at the usual rate 50 for first, 40 for second, 30, 20 and 10 points respectively. An additional 10 points will be awarded if a spot landing is achieved. 11 Wing Loading Bill Hickey When building from plans or changing the power plant of a kit, one is often faced with the eternal model aircraft question will it fly? Perhaps not that drastic; more like how well will it fly? The time-honored technique to answer such a question is to evaluate the wing loading, or how much weight per unit of area the wing is expected to carry. Usually expressed by modelers in ounces per square foot (oz/ft 2 ), a rule of thumb is oz/ft 2 should yield a good-flying plane. Unfortunately, that rule is only useful for a typical sized sport flyer. Much larger or smaller, and the good flyer wing loading goes up or down, respectively. This 40 Loading, size dependence of wing loading can be seen oz/ft 2 in a range of models shown in Table 1, with 30 wing spans from 9 to 144. All are good 20 flyers, with wing loadings ranging from 1-36 oz/ft 2. Plotting these data in Figure 1 10 Span, in illustrates how wing loading rises as 0 wingspan increases. Figure 1 Wing Loading vs Span As explained by Reynolds 1, the problem is that weight is a function of airframe volume (length cubed) but wing area is proportional to a length squared. The work-around is to use cubic wing loading - weight divided by wing length cubed (with wing length as the square root of wing area). Table 2 oz/ft 3 Glider (slow-flyer) < 4 Trainer 6 Aerobat 9 Pattern 11 Scale Racer (Warbird) 12 Full Size Reynolds categorized model aircraft by typical cubic wing loading as provided in Table 2. He also compared cubic wing loading to power loading, or aircraft weight per unit of available power. This is a classical aircraft design parameter, for example a full size P-47 Thunderbolt has a power loading of ~8 lb/hp. His original chart is reproduced as Figure 2; note that power loading in on the top horizontal axis and Reynolds converted this to a displacement loading on the bottom axis so the average modeler could just use the displacement of their engines. He created a Reynolds Performance Factor (RPF) by multiplying wing cubic loading and this displacement loading which is like a golf score the lower, the better. 12 Wing Loading Bill Hickey Figure 3 Reynolds Performance for Aircraft in Table 1 Figure 4 RPF for Aircraft in Table 1, Inverse Power Loading The aircraft in Table 1 are plotted on a Reynolds Performance Factor chart in Figure 3. Note that the displacement loading has been replaced by an electrical equivalent of 1b/hp. The Abbott equation was used to compute available power from prop diameter, prop pitch, number of prop blades and static rpm at full power. This data is transformed to the familiar inverse power loading (watts per pound) in Figure 4, straightening out the RPF parameter. Note how the aircraft fall where one might expect, though electrics seem to really stretch the classification bubbles. Bill Hickey

Fixing a Crooked Wing Jeff Gittelman How d That Wing Get Crooked And Who s To Blame The answer to both of the above it was my fault. Now that I ve confessed let me tell how it happened and how it s being fixed. I ve been building a Tower Hobbies Fun 51 profile plane a balsa/ply kit for a number of months. I m using the same two work tables and sheetrock topping that has seen a number of successful builds. I didn t notice that the tables were no longer at the same height there was about a 1/8 difference. The sheetrock seemed straight but in fact it wasn t. As a result the wing ended up with anhedral instead of being level!! Although I was told it would have flown OK, I wasn t satisfied. The plane surgeon (Bob Mosinski) was consulted. The diagnosis was that to straighten the wing we d need to remove most of the balsa shear webs which had been glued between the top and bottom spars. Surgery complete, 10 pounds of weights on the center of the wing and the shear webs were replaced the wing now reasonably level!! But then there was another problem. In taking out the bowing of the wing at the spars, the trailing edge tips became twisted resulting in the outer most ribs raising the trailing edge to possess washout. Not a terrible situation since that would add stability. But one wing was worse than the other. The surgeon was consulted again the prognosis, buy an ARF from Hobby King and forget this project. Tears were shed, and then as an experiment we decided to try cutting into the trailing edge but that didn t solve the problem. Then we cut the three outer ribs just behind the spars. Then pressing down on the trailing edge was possible and the wing washout was gone. I added triangle wood pieces to the cut ribs to fill the gaps created and now the wing is in pretty good shape. The balance of the covering and assembly was uneventful. Jeff Gittelman P.S. If you ever buy an ARF with warped components there are some good YouTube videos on how to easily correct the problem.

Protecting Your Model Jeff Gittelman Protecting Your Model from Sun & Heat As we approach the warm weather I wanted to be prepared to protect my foam models from the summer heat and sun something the manufacturers often recommend. I have a plane cover made by FMS. It s made of stretch material with pockets for the wing tips and stabilizer tips. It works great but is made for their 55 models it doesn t stretch enough for bigger units and there s too much material for smaller units so it falls off. There are likely other pre-made covers on the market, but I knew I could make my own for less money. The materials I used included: an old white or light colored sheet (Goodwill may carry these for very little $ if you don t have one at home), plastic grommets (package of 8 for $2.99 at Ace), four tent stakes, 6 piece of Velcro (like the ones used to hold batteries in the model). Tools required tape measure, scissors, hobby knife. I measured the model dimensions to make sure I had the right size sheet at home. Then I draped the sheet over the model and cut out the size needed making it a little bigger than I thought I d need. I did some trimming then put grommets in the corners. Optionally, I also put a fifth grommet in the front center through which I ran the Velcro piece to wrap around the prop hub. The corner grommets will be held down with the tent stakes. There are lots of ways you can vary the design, for example you could cut the sheet very close to the model shape and attach elastic material (JoAnn Fabrics or other stores) to go around the model similar to the FMS design. I was able to make two covers from one sheet to fit a number of my planes and all I needed to buy was the grommets and tent stakes. Happy Flying!! Jeff Gittelman
