We didn t get to have our annual picnic due to rain. We did however have a great meeting with one of the highest attendance counts ever. Over 25 Members signed up to take the Prop Masters Winter Project Challenge. If you missed the sign- up don t worry the sheet will be available at the October 25, 2011 meeting. We also had a mystery FUN FLY which ended up being a FUN DRIVE testing everyone s ground handling skills and the use of that other stick on the left of our transmitters. Everyone enjoyed it and I am sure it will be added to the Fun Fly event list. Read more about it later in the newsletter. If you are looking to find one place that has everything hobbies, check out the IHobby Expo in Rosemont October 22 nd & 23 rd This event draws together all manufactures and distributors of just about every hobby, planes, trains and automobiles with some robots, plastic models and war games thrown in. This is the last time the show is going to be held in Rosemont so don t miss it, otherwise you have to drive to Cleveland, OH next year. We made a commitment to safety and have been doing a great job. One of our other charters as a club is to give back to the community. As part of that charter it was agreed at our last meeting to start a donation of canned food items that would be donated to a food pantry by the Prop Masters. Let s start the collection off big this next meeting and bring non-perishable canned food items to the meeting. The value of a man resides in what he gives and not in what he is capable of receiving. - Albert Einstein We have another great raffle this month, some surprises and plenty of FUN! 8 Fun Fly Committee Prop Masters Annual Family Picnic For the second year in a row our annual picnic was cancelled due to weather. Let s hope we have better luck next year. The Picnic Committee, Bob Mosinski and Larry Dudkowski Evil Dave s NASPLANE 1.5! Fun Fly #8 Fun fly #8 went quite well, there were 16 entries and the event went as follows. All planes started from the centerline in the grass and had to make a figure 8 by crossing at the center X. 1.5 laps were required. 2 electrics took 1 st and 3 rd in expert so the electric myth is now history. This seemed to be a fun and enjoyable event. Maybe in the future we can expand on this one with a few more tricks added. This Fun Fly did give our flyers a chance to use the left stick for a change. Bill (Roscoe) Barclay decided to end his heat with a take- off and landing as Bill forgot there were no extra landing points. Bill s engine quit anyway so he was awarded with the WALK OF SHAME!!!! October Fun-Fly Fun Fly #9 This month s Fun-Fly will be the ever-popular Bean Counter. This event will be held on Sunday October 30 th. Please sign in when you arrive and get your supplies from the Fun-Fly committee. Competition will start as soon as the pilots are ready, which should be at approximately 10:00am. Practice is allowed before the event and it will be open flying afterwards. Here s how it works. Each pilot is given a paper cup, (3 oz cups for electrics and 9 oz cups for everyone else or the pilot s choice on cup size), some rubber bands, wooden skews and twenty beans. The beans are placed in the cup. The cup is attached to the model. You must use the cups, beans and equipment supplied. The cup can be placed anywhere on the model and in any manner as long as the beans are not prevented from falling out of and free of the cup in any way. Specifically, nothing can be placed in the cup to prevent the beans from falling and the cup cannot be modified to prevent the beans from coming out. Generally we recommend mounting the cup forward of the CG point. The pilot takes off and then must fly a specific set of maneuvers for his class while trying not to lose any beans. The Pilot completing the maneuvers and landing with the most beans remaining in his cup is the winner.
9 Fun Fly Committee Here are the rules. Each pilot must fly the prescribed maneuver and complete the minimum number of circuits of the field for his class. As always Beginners can have an instructor take off and land but the Beginner must fly the prescribed number of circuits of the field. For each pilot class, the pilot, who, after completing the maneuvers and landing, has the most beans remaining in his cup, will be the winner. The pilot having the second most number of beans will finish second and so on. First, second and third places in each pilot class will be awarded points as follows: thirty for first, twenty for second and ten points for third. Duplicate bean counts will be awarded duplicate finishes. Flight Maneuvers by Pilot Class: Beginners: Fly at least two circuit of the field. Novices: Fly at least two circuits of the field and perform one loop. Advanced: Fly at least three circuits of the field and perform two loops. Experts: Fly at least four circuits of the field and perform three loops. 10 Hints, Information, Tips and Stuff Larry Dudkowski My current project is a new Avistar ARF trainer. While I was working on it I found these tips to be useful. I checked back issues of my column but didn t see them on my list of published articles. So I thought I d publish them now. Hopefully you ll find them useful too. I know I did. When you have to attach control surfaces, like ailerons, elevator or rudder with those flexible CA hinges, this little tip is a quick and easy way to Get er done. This process works on any model using CA hinges, even Foamies. Just remember to use Foam Safe CA. You will need to get some small diameter straight pins. Any type of straight pins will do. They don t have to be T pins but the smaller the diameter of the pins the better. You will need two pins for each hinge you re going to install. For example, if you re installing an aileron and it takes four hinges, you will need eight pins, three hinges you will need six pins and so on. Don t worry; you won t need a lot of pins since you will reuse them. First find the center of each hinge, which is the point where it will bend when flexing. Mark this center with a pencil. No need to measure exactly, you can just eye ball it. You don t have to find the exact center of the hinge either but the closer to the center the better. Next push two pins into the hinge along this line about equal distance apart. The idea behind using the pins is that they will keep the hinges from going too far into one surface and not far enough into the other when you push the two together. Once you have all of the hinges pined in this way you re ready to start mounting the control surface. Let s say we re going to mount the ailerons and four hinges are required to mount them to the wing. First test fit the hinges by pushing them into the slots. Make sure that the hinges go all the way up to the pins on both sides. When putting the hinges in, make sure that the heads go on the same side. It doesn t make a difference but it s just easier to remove them if the heads are all facing the same way. Place the four hinges in the slots that were cut into the aileron. Make sure the hinge goes in up to the pins and that both pins are up against the edge of the aileron. Now attach the aileron to the wing by pushing the hinges on the ailerons into the slots cut into the wing s trailing edge. Again push the aileron hinges all the way into the wing up to the pins. Now take a felt tip marker and mark the location of the hinges on both sides of the aileron. Once all of the hinges are in place and marked, pull out all of the pins. See I told you that you would use them again. When all of the pins are removed, push the ailerons in all the way to close the gap between the wing and the ailerons. There should be little or no gap between the aileron and the wing, the smaller the gap the better. No gap is best. Once you have the aileron pushed all the way up against the trailing edge of the wing flex the ailerons to make sure that they move freely. When you are satisfied that everything s in place and there is little or no gap between the wing and the ailerons just add a FEW drops of this CA to complete the process. This is why we marked the location of the hinges. Once the gap is closed the actual hinge location is hard to see. Use just a few drops per hinge, maybe three or four. If you use too much it will fill the gap between the control and the mounting surfaces which will cause you to have a very hard time flexing the control surface, not to mention a tough job cleaning up all that extra dried CA. Once the CA dries, clean up any excess CA with Acetone. Just be careful. Acetone is flammable and not the best thing in the world to breath. So be sure to use it in a well-ventilated area. While we re talking about attaching the ailerons to the wing, here s another helpful hint. If the model is using a torque rod setup, that is a single servo mounted to the center of the wing, and you need to epoxy the torque rods into the ailerons, try this. I cover the trailing edge of the wing where the torque rods go with some masking tape. Be sure you cover the edge for the length of the torque rod. That way if some epoxy bleeds over the torque rod the masking tape will keep the torque rod from being glued to the wing. October already? Too bad we had to cancel the picnic. Oh well. That s it for another month. FLY SMART, FLY SAFE. Larry Dudkowski
