He joined the chapter and jumped in quickly to fill a huge hole (thank you John). If you have not checked out the web site lately, you should. John has been tweaking it and it is now much cleaner. Additionally John will be adding the option of paying your dues for next year via the web site. This should make it much easier to pay your yearly dues. Some dates to remember The chapter meeting this month is on Friday, June 9. We will be doing a hotdog and trivia night at the WHF at 6:30 PM. Feel free to bring the family or a friend. The chapter will be providing dogs, brats, condiments and drinks. Please bring a side dish or desert to pass. After dinner there will be a trivia contest with prizes of no value whatsoever. However, bragging rights will be awarded! June 11th: June 14th: June 17th: June 24th: 48 days to KOSH! If you know roughly what days you are going to be up there and would like to Shorelines 1

2 stay in touch with the chapter, send me the dates and a cell phone number. A few days before Oshkosh I will send it out to the chapter. Jim started doing this a few years ago and it has worked well. It s nice to be able to meet up for events during the week. Changing of the Board All the chapter positions will be up for election this fall. That means the President, Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurers positions are all up for election. Two of the board members will be retiring. Dave Smith will be retiring from the Treasurer s position, and Sam Battaglia from the Secretary s position. Both have done a yeoman s job over the last few years to help keep the chapter on track. Minimally we need to find people willing to fill those two positions. Mike Fazio (VP) and I have said we will serve another stint. Both the Secretary and Treasurer positions are excellent ways to get involved with the chapter and neither requires an extensive knowledge of the membership. A nominating committee has been formed comprised of John Cecilia and Ed Willgress. If you have an interest in any of the open positions, please feel free to talk to them. Look forward to seeing you on Friday. Daniel New Members whose job it was to fly over and photograph uncharted areas in the South Pacific. Howard struggled to pass the enlistment exams for Army pilot, but made it on his 3 rd try. Although humble about his abilities, he turned out to be a natural pilot. His recounting of his time in the war also included important reminders of the evils of racism and bigotry. Today, Howard is a very spry 94 yrs old, a member of the Aviation Hall of Fame, and is still active as a CFI! An overlying theme through Levinson s talk was that he succeeded in what he did only because he did not give up. He persisted until he reached his goals. CAP cadets handed out a paper to attendees with this quote: Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not: nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not: the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. - President Calvin Coolidge Howard Levinson in his much younger days, at the tender age of 84, when he received his ATP rating. He is presently 94 and an active CFI! Please welcome three recent new members! Joining up in January was Scott Wentz of Grayslake, a builder with an RV-10 in progress; Sandra Krueger of Chicago, pilot and new member after attending our recent movie night; private pilot John Strong of Lindenhurst; Rich Shedlak; and Mark TenPas. Welcome them at your first opportunity. Meeting Minutes We didn t have the regular monthly meeting in May, but instead joined with CAP Squadron IL 042 to host and attend a presentation by Howard Levinson. Howard is a WWII veteran, having served as an Army pilot for a team Shorelines 2

In addition to EAA 414 members, there was good attendance from CAP Squadron IL 042 and well as Libertyville High School students. Project Updates F-111 Aardvark EAA Chapter 414 members have been volunteering their many skills and a great amount of time to prepare an F111 for display at Waukegan Airport. The aircraft was acquired by the Waukegan Airport Authority from the Rantoul Air Force Museum last year. The cosmetics of the aircraft were not great, but what a difference a year makes! The aircraft has been painted and the pedestal has been built, and right now we re waiting on the proper permissions from the FAA to move forward with mounting the aircraft. Dan with Lt. Being new, I m going to be relying more on you, the chapter members, for content for the newsletter. As time goes on I ll probably contribute content myself, but for the time being I d be happy to take your thoughts and ideas for inclusion in the newsletter. It doesn t need to be a serious write-up, just something you may have experienced, thought of, or read that might be of general interest to our members. We re casual here I m looking forward to hearing from you! -John S. Nieuport 28 Construction on the Nieuport 28 is progressing at a fast pace. Since taking delivery of the kit in November, parts have been inventoried, missing parts replaced, and construction has begun in Jim Goodman s KUGN hangar. Construction of the fuselage tube frame is nearly complete. Bob Hamilton and Mike Racette have put in many hours measuring, coping tubing, and riveting this assembly. With the final riveting of a few remaining gusset plates, this portion of the assembly will be complete. Jim Goodman formed and assembled the horizontal stabilizer. He has also completed major work Shorelines 3

4 on the landing gear assembly. John Cecilia, Bob Herrick, Jim Hull, have spent hours forming the rudder assembly, drilling wing spars, and bending at least 500 wing ribs (well, it seemed like that; maybe only 100). Paul Alleman, Bill Costello, Mike Fazio, and Joe Shea have all put in time helping on these and other portions of the project. The next update will report on the efforts to assemble and rig the wings onto the fuselage. The project is on schedule for completion before the next Northern Illinois Air Show (9/9/17). The Nieuport team meets Monday and Friday days to work on the project. For more information, contact Jim Hull. Speaker: Mike Busch Qualifies for FAA Wings and AMT credit Do you really need the FAA's blessing to install an extra cigarette lighter socket in your Bonanza, or a gear mirror on your Centurion? It all depends on whether the modification is deemed major or minor. Mike Busch discusses what the difference is, who decides, what paperwork and FAA involvement is needed -- and most important, how to maximize the chance the modification you want to make to your aircraft will be approved. 6/14/17, 7 pm CDT Tips for Flying into EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2017 Speaker: Fred Stadler Qualifies for FAA Wings credit EAA's volunteer NOTAM chairman Fred Stadler shares some hints and tips for reducing your pilot workload when flying into EAA AirVenture Oshkosh. Discussion will highlight the special requirements and procedures of the FAA-issued NOTAM. Fuselage is upside down. Speaker: Bob Mackey, Falcon Insurance Agency Have you ever heard someone comment that they re flying naked and wondered how that s legal? The insurance world refers to the act of going without insurance as, flying naked, and in most states, it is legal. However, while it may be legal in your state, flying naked certainly is not advisable. In this webinar, Bob Mackey senior vice president of Falcon Insurance Agency will discuss the pros and cons of not buying aircraft insurance, how aircraft insurance works, cost vs. risk, skipping the insurance you may not need, and where to find an aviation insurance broker who can help you make the right decisions. It increases your skill sets and makes you a better pilot. Tailwheel flying can open up new opportunities and allow you to explore areas in aviation that have numerous tailwheel aircraft, such as aerobatic, bush/outback, classic, warbirds, and homebuilt. Glen Oliphant discusses the techniques of tailwheel flying and highlights which are the best tailwheel aircraft to purchase for the first time buyer. Local Aviation Events The flying season is upon us! There are numerous aviation events planned for this year, too many to list in its entirety here. But have you seen our website lately, It s been updated with a lot of new information. On the home page you can find download links for summer and fall event schedules. Here is a brief list of events for June: Meeting Location Chapter meetings and events aren t held on a rigorous schedule, nor in the same place, so check the 414 calendar to see when and where the next one is scheduled. The June chapter meeting is scheduled for Friday June 9 th at the Warbird Heritage Foundation at 6:30 pm. WHF is located on the west side of Waukegan airport. Do not take Lewis Avenue to Beach Road, as Beach is interrupted by runways. Take Green Bay Road to Beach Road. Then take Beach Road east, through the security gate, where Beach becomes Corporate Drive. Once past the gate, WHF is in the last building on the right (closest to the runway).
