1 The Official Newsletter of May 2017 Volume 61 Issue 5 With spring flying in full swing there is no shortage of places to go and things to do as we share our passion for aviation. On Friday, May 12, 7:00 P.M. at IVY Tech Center we have our regular Chapter Get-Together with a panel discussion of homebuilt test flying. The following day, Saturday, May 13 at Smith Field come out to assist with our first Young Eagles rally of the season from 9:00 A.M. to 1:00P.M.. Encourage youth ages 8 to 17 to get out to the airport and discover for themselves the excitement and possibilities in aviation. If you are a pilot new to flying Young Eagles, make certain you complete the Youth Protection Policy Training on the EAA website and forward your certificate of completion to Laramie Resler. Volunteer ground crew and pilots will be needed at several events through September so watch the calendar for your opportunity to share your love of flight with kids. Young Eagles shirts will be available at each Rally in both the new (2016) red design and some gold as well. Some Chapter 2 hats are available for $12.00 also. See the calendar of events on page 3 of this newsletter or online for all the Young Eagle rallies for Chapter 2 as well as Vintage Chapter 37 and plan to provide your support as you are able. At the May 12 get-together (and by the same day) we will announce a Scavenger Hunt that can be flown any time before the June 9 gettogether. If you are not on but would like a copy mailed to you, contact me at Looking ahead, on Friday, June 9 at 6:00 P.M. Useful Information for All Pilots We are trying to wrap up our EAA Chapter 2 membership renewals for Several people have not yet done that. You can check our website to see if you are up to date (from the menu bar, click "EAA 2 Members" > "Membership Status"). The Chapter will provide hamburgers and hotdogs. Members should bring a side dish or dessert to share. Please invite your family or a friend to this event. The Scavenger hunt will conclude at that time and participants will be recognized. Our Pancake Fly-in/Cruise-in will be on Saturday, July 8 from 7:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M. at Smith Field Hangar 2. We hope to see all members, friends, neighbors and lots of classic cars and planes of all types for this annual event. I hope we can get some informal fly-outs going this summer. If you have a suggestion for one, let me know. These are done very informally. Any pilot can schedule a destination and time and let me know. I will announce by so others can join, and then, weather permitting, the group can make the flight. It is a great time to fill an empty seat with any of our non-flying members or friends. And finally, don't forget to make plans to be at AirVenture July 24 to July 30! Happy Flying! Homebuilt Corner Preparation of and Test Flying your Homebuilt Aircraft A s the builder of a Zenith Zodiac 650B that is nearing completion, I have been a student of flight test preparation and procedures for many years. Our May 12 Get Together at the Ivy Tech Center features a panel discussion on flight testing a homebuilt by experienced chapter members. I am sure you will get good useable information from this discussion whether you fly a factory built, homebuilt, ultralight or are an aspiring pilot. We hope to see you there at 7 P.M. I have always wanted to fly and I enjoy the challenge of creating a custom kit aircraft of my own. As a frustrated renter, I can t wait for my Zenith Zodiac to be complete. The monetary challenge of affording an aircraft project meant that I would build instead of staying current with flying a rented aircraft. Because of this, I have planned a sequence of regaining my flying currency that I will discuss later. When your project starts to look like an airplane and you can run the engine, conducting a fuel flow test is an important milestone. This verifies that your engine will have more fuel than it needs in a maximum climb angle. The basic test is to drain the tanks and to raise and secure the aircraft in this extreme climb angle. With the engine off and the fuel line at the engine draining into a catch pail, you add 1 gallon of fuel to the empty (or almost empty) fuel tank, and time how long it takes to drain through to the engine. Do this for each tank to get the required fuel flow (See graphic from Kitplanes on page 4). 2 EAA Chapter 2 Encourages and Promotes Sport and Aeronautical Education in Northeast Indiana (Continued on page 4)

Then I will be the most experienced pilot on the field for my first flight and for flying the 40 hours of test time. When you think you are done and are preparing for the FAA / DAR inspection, admit that you have too much intimate time and familiarity with the plane that you have built. You need the help of others to double check your work. Plan to host a Many Pairs of Experienced Eyes party. Invite the pilots you respect that have built or worked on aircraft to explore your aircraft construction, wiring, engine and systems. Before the party begins, eat a slice of humble pie, because you are asking these experienced people to be very critical of your work. Then accept their help and comments, since your life may depend on it! After receiving your airworthiness certificate from the inspector, ask yourself if you should be the test pilot. I hold the wise advice from William Wynne Founder and Pres. of Fly Corvair.com in very high regard. Here is a quote from William on this subject: It is perfectly OK and right to have pride in the plane you created, but when it comes to operation, and particularly the test flying, put all that emotional stuff away, it is time for cold, egofree thinking and logic. The golden rule of this is the most qualified person available flies the test hours, ALONE. - Courtesy, William Wynne. To that end, I am planning to get current in the C-172, get my BFR, and then get checked out in a Diamond. Once I have regained my flying proficiency, I will drive he flight ops manual has additional valuable information: NEVER fly a plane you have not been checked out in, even if this means going to the other side of the country and paying for lessons. (expensive, but cheaper than crashing) If you want to get checked out for less, have someone fly off the 40 hours on your plane, and then have a CFI check you out in your own plane. If the plane is a single seater, ask the DESIGNER what is an equivalent 2 seat plane. NEVER have two people in the plane, even if the FAA approves it Think About it - If no one will fly your airplane when it is done, ask yourself if this is a reflection of your work or attitude toward safety. If you have a good perspective, and a well built plane that has a good engine/airframe combination, there will be skilled people willing to fly it. Courtesy, William Wynne, Plan B - Several AirVenture seminars on test flying your homebuilt have recommended the choice of an airport surrounded by fields or other potential emergency landing areas. Even if that 4 (Continued on page 5) EAA Chapter 2 Encourages and Promotes Sport and Aeronautical Education in Northeast Indiana

Many also recommend a flight test crew to assist that first flight. This includes good handheld communication, emergency gear and a vehicle ready for an off runway landing. I used the recommendations of several experienced RV builders to purchase a used military Nomex flight suit for personal protection during the flight testing phase. Keep Cool - Especially if the builder is doing the initial flight, undue pressure needs to be avoided so the pilot can keep a clear head. This includes limiting the people present to a very small and select group. Also, avoid plans for extensive video and photo documentation of the first flight. Both factors can add additional pressure to the pilot. Here is wise advice from William Wynne If everything is not right for a clear, calm morning, first flight; then reset ahead 24 hours. This avoids additional pressure and the rush to fly. Keep Notes - After the first flight and every successive flight, keep a note pad for bugs to fix and questions to research. Using flight test cards can assist the pilot in checking off structured tests of the aircraft in a systematic way. The objective is to gather the data for the operating manual of your aircraft and not just bore holes in the sky for 40 hours! Below, you will find some excellent links for essential flight testing.
