1 AVIATOR 863 Lebanon, TN November 2012 President: Doug Eshelman Editor: Gary Piper New baby in the chapter. Be sure to look at this one up close and personal. She is an absolute beauty. This is Kevin Johnson s new Chief. You can see it in corporate Hangar 6. For those of you who were unable to attend, you missed a fantastic party at Mike and Marianne s home. Lots of good food and people to share time with. Thank you Big Foot and Marianne for your hospitality and the great time. There were 21 of us who attended the combined chapter meeting at MBT to see and hear Hoot Gibson share his Reno racing experiences. He also shed light on Jimmy Leeward s accident in Photo by David Schultz Hoot was one of the investigators of the crash. Hoot has the kind of life memories that most people only dream of. Janet calls me an adrenalin junkie. After seeing what Hoot has done, she said he is an adrenalin junkie on steroids. Great meeting. Thanks Photo by David Schultz chapter 419. 2 2 Ashley Jones This past summer I went to Basic Air Academy June I stayed at the lodge next to Pioneer Airport. There were 3 groups: Alpha, Bravo, and Charlie; I was in group Bravo. Every day the groups rotated between Ground School, Workshop, and the Challenge Course. During Ground School we made rockets, that contained an egg, out of designated materials, and the rocket had to land with the egg intact. We also used simulators. During workshop, we paired up to build wing ribs. We also bent and cut metal to make a thermometer. During the Challenge Course we did teambuilding exercises, such as: passing2x4s to get the whole group from one side of a group of stepping stones to the other and everyone putting one foot on a wooden box and holding hands with someone on the other side of the box to balance and get everyone off the ground. We also got to fly in a Cessna Skycatcher and a helicopter. After the museum closed one night, we got to go beyond the barriers of most exhibits. Basic Air Academy was a lot of fun and I had a great time!
3 We had a very nice Young Eagle Rally on the 10th. It was a beautiful day, with just a little breeze and everyone enjoyed themselves. A big thank you to Dan Allen, Howard Holmes, Chuck Johnston and Doug Eshelman who joined me in flying the kids and at least as big a thanks to our ground crew, Janet Piper, Big Foot (Mike Russell), Menda Holmes, Allison Jones, Ashley Jones, Tom Draus, Kevin Johnson and Matt Bryan.

5 Our regular November meeting is the Great Chili Cook-Off and officer nomination meeting. And, it is normally held on the second Thursday. However, because we accepted the invitation from Chapter 419, Murfreesboro, to see and hear Hoot Gibson, we moved it to Saturday and added a Young Eagle Rally to make things more interesting. Gary Piper, April Eshelman, Dan Allen, Big Foot, Kevin Johnson and Chris Cook submitted chili to compete for a huge cash prize that would send you to retirement. Our judge was Jerry Kirby. Thank you, sir. Winners were: 1st Place April 2nd Place Dan 3rd Place Kevin
6 You told me this wasn t HOT!!
7 As we approach the end of 2012, I want to thank the members of Chapter 863 for their support and participation in all of our chapter activities this year. We ve really had some great meetings beginning with Bob Hill, FAA safety and warbird examiner, Mike and Sandy Lohle, owners of Lohle Aircraft Finishes, and 91 year old Lew Lockhart, a P-38 pilot who flew in New Guinea in In mid summer, we found out that the Shelbyville EAA chapter had planned a fly in on the same day ours was scheduled. So rather than trying to beat them, we joined in and supported their very first fly in which was nicely done. Later that day over 30 of us enjoyed a steak cook out in hangar 2 on a beautiful afternoon. Our Mach One party became the Mach 1.5 party, hosted by Mike and Maryanne Russell. For the November meeting last week the Murfreesboro Chapter 419 invited us to attend a presentation on Reno Air Racing by Hoot Gibson. We had around 21 people attend from our chapter and it was a great evening. During the year we ve continued to support the Young Eagles program mostly from our FOP camp flying in June and July but at other times as well. Our chapter continues to give the Boy Scout Aviation Merit Badge course through Cumberland University. Lastly, our chapter sponsored two young campers to the EAA Aviation Camp, Ashley Jones and Andrew Long. Both of them had a wonderful time there and the costs of sponsorship were largely offset by our Young eagle credits accumulated. So thanks again for supporting this great program which to date has flown over 1.7 million kids. And by the way, our Dan Allen just flew his 1200 th kid this past Saturday. Amazing! The December EAA meeting is the traditional Christmas party at the Baugh hangar. This year it will be on Friday Dec 7 th starting at 6 pm. We are very grateful to John The President s Pen and Deborah for opening up their hangar for our festivities. The Baugh s will be furnishing the meat dish. We ask that everyone bring a covered side dish like last year. Either a dessert, salad or other side dish. Please RSVP to Deborah NLT Dec 4 th as to the number coming and what you are bringing. Deborah s is: deborahbaugh@comcast.net and phone is The party is also BYOB. Dan Allen will be assisting with the money tree and we will ask you to rejoin the chapter that evening. The current officers and board agreed to serve another year and were voted in by those at the chili cook off. The results are: Doug Eshelman, president; Mike Russell, VP; April Eshelman Sec/Treasurer. The board members are Doug Eshelman, Mike Russell, Jim Johnson, Deb Baugh, Dan Allen, Robert Redmond, and Gary Piper. The winners of the chili cook off judged by Jerry Kirby were: first place, April Eshelman; second place, Dan and Ronelda Allen, third place, Kevin Johnson. The board will meet in early January 2013 to set the meeting agenda for the year. We are very excited that Howard and Menda Holmes have agreed to host a fly out at their Fall Creek Airpark home next summer. Additionally we must decide on a fall fly in. If you have any ideas for a fly in or have a speaker, please let me know and we d love to have him/her/them at a meeting. Happy Thanksgiving to you all and we ll see you at the Baugh hangar. 9 9 Editor s Words By: Gary Piper Every once in a while, you find someone at the airport who really wants to help. And, is happy to do so. This is future aviator Matthew. At one year old, he has developed a keen sense of priorities and is totally on the path to success. Shown here helping me get the Cub out, you can see the genuine pleasure he gets from being around aircraft. I can relate. OK. We re getting down to the finish line for this year. One more newsletter and we start putting things together for I most definitely need your help. Please let me know what s going on in your aviation world and send pictures.
