This venue is somewhat difficult for our "mature" audience to navigate, and I am in need of 4 Jubil-Aires (who will not be performing on stage) to assist with ushering folks to their seats before the show, possibly during intermission and at the end of the show. Here is a picture of the auditorium (sorry it is not in focus) so you can get an idea why Purple: Tentative Performance RED: Newly Scheduled we would like a few men to assist the Jubil- Ladies in seating guests who are less mobile. A fellowship of men devoted to the art of a cappella barbershop singing, committed to excellence in musical performance and good will in the community. Visit the Fairfax Jubil-Aires s Web page at
2 2 Patrons will be entering from both the lower and upper doors of the theater. Please me ) if you can help with this. Thanks in advance for your help! St. Patrick s Day Social -Doug Jones- Jubil-Aires, Jubi-Ladies, and Friends of Jubil-Aires! To accommodate everyone wishing to attend the M-AD Spring Convention in Harrisburg, PA, as well as our St. Patrick s Day Celebration, our event has been RESCHEDULED to a new date and time. We now plan to party on Friday, March 20, 2015, at 5:30pm. The venue remains the same, American Legion Fairfax Post 177, 3939 Oak Street, Fairfax, VA. As in previous years, the event will start with a social hour (read Cash Bar here), our buffet meal (read classic St. Pat s menu), and finishing with the Fairfax Jubil-Aires Festival of Irish Song Barbershop Style (read songs, limericks, and fun!). A new flyer with all the details is attached. As always, St. Pat s will be a great time!! In addition to the quartets signed up to compete (three judge panel) for awards, everyone in attendance will be encouraged to enter the Pick-Up Quartet drawings by placing their name in the hat(s) so they can perform Center Stage with one or more PU Quartets, all in a very relaxed, Barbershop Friendly environment! The stage mic will be opened from time to time for anyone with a limerick (or a bit o Irish humor) to share. Costumes are welcome, but not required! Come join the fun and ring some chords! We look forward to seeing you there! Remembering Bill -Palmer McGrew- When I joined the Fairfax chapter in 1974, one of the assistant directors and a tenor of some amazing talent was Bill Karukas. He took a "short vacation" to try acting in local theater companies and found he liked it a lot and changed his hobby. He didn't stop singing barbershop completely and sang with the Brothers Flanagan for many years. I just attended a performance of the "brothers" and they told me Bill just died and was buried yesterday. Too bad we didn't know. (Does anyone remember his parrot joke?) My first contest was a MAD contest in DC. I was a newbie and didn't have the white tux with magenta tie, hat, gloves and cane, but Bill wasn't going to be available so he loaned me his JA's costume (the only time I ever wore it). The new director insisted on a more modern costume, which you can still see in the chapter Hall of Shame, the puffy white sleeves and red jumpsuits. The spectacular white tuxes were sold to someone else. Thanks to Bill I got to wear one once. That was also the occasion of one of my favorite stories. Before going on stage one of the Jubil-Ladies applied full makeup to my face. I was actually supposed to be on duty on the US-USSR Hotline and had prevailed upon one of my translators to stay long enough for me to compete. As soon as we finished I quickly dressed in my Army uniform, went looking for my car, and sped back to the Pentagon. Yes, the Hotline terminal is in the National Military Command Center. Several hours later I went to the mens room and saw myself in the mirror, still wearing pancake, lipstick, eyebrow pencil, and rouge. No one had said a word. Farewell Billy, keep a song in your heart. 3 3 Bill Karukas Parrot Joke A priest goes to the pet shop looking for a pet. The pet store owner suggests a pair of parrots who, he says, have immense vocabularies so the priest buys the pair. When he gets them home they talk up a storm in the crudest possible language, swear word after swear word. The priest is horrified and after the pet store owner refuses to take them back decides to solve the problem himself. He gives each one a rosary and demands that they say the rosary a hundred times a day. The parrots comply since they don't get fed unless they do it. However, when they finish their rosaries they go back to their crude language and dirty jokes. The priest goes back to the pet store and asks the owner what to do. He suggests they buy a female parrot who will shame the boys into cleaning up their language. So he does. He takes the female parrot home and installs her next to the boys, who are still saying their rosaries. After the priest leaves the room, hopeful, the female says, "Hi boys, my name is Sweetiepie and I love to party." Parrot Joe says, "You can drop the rosary, Mike, our prayers have been answered."
