7 Pride Book Club The Pride Book Club is open to all persons 18 years and older interested in reading LGBTQA literature. They meet the second Thursday of the month from 6:30-7:30 in the library. They will be discussing An unkindness of ghosts, by Rivers Solomon, a 2018 Stonewall Honor book, the story of life on the generational space ship Matilda, dealing with slavery, feudalism, prison, and religion. If you have any questions or suggestions, or would like to sign up, call the library at and ask for Barbara. Non-fiction Book Club The Non-fiction Book Club usually meets on the third Wednesday of the month. The next meeting will be March 20th at 6:30, when they will be discussing Bad blood, by John Carreyrou. The full inside story of the breathtaking rise and shocking collapse of a multibilliondollar startup, by the prize-winning journalist who first broke the story and pursued it to the end in the face of pressure and threats from the CEO and her lawyers. In 2014, Theranos founder and CEO Elizabeth Holmes was widely seen as the female Steve Jobs: a brilliant Stanford dropout whose startup "unicorn" promised to revolutionize the medical industry with a machine that would make blood tests significantly faster and easier. Backed by investors such as Larry Ellison and Tim Draper, Theranos sold shares in a fundraising round that valued the company at $9 billion, putting Holmes's worth at an estimated $4.7 billion. There was just one problem: The technology didn't work. Here is the riveting story of the biggest corporate fraud since Enron, a disturbing cautionary tale set amid the bold promises and gold-rush frenzy of Silicon Valley. Snacks and tea will be served. Copies of the book are available at the library. Third Thursday Book Group Meeting on the third Thursday of each month at 6:30, this group has been reading some of the titles from PBS s Great American Read list. The book for the March 21st discussion is The outsiders, by S.E. Hinton. No one ever said life was easy. But Ponyboy is pretty sure that he's got things figured out. He knows that he can count on his brothers, Darry and Sodapop. And he knows that he can count on his friends true friends who would do anything for him, like Johnny and Two-Bit. But not on much else besides trouble with the Socs, a vicious gang of rich kids whose idea of a good time is beating up on greasers like Ponyboy. At least he knows what to expect until the night someone takes things too far. Mystery/Crime Book Group The Mystery/Crime Book Group meets at 6:30 on the fourth Thursday of most months. The next meeting will be on March 28th. They will be discussing Hunting el Chapo, by Andrew Hogan. A blend of Manhunt, Killing Pablo, and Zero Dark Thirty, Andrew Hogan and Douglas Century s sensational investigative hightech thriller soon to be a major motion picture from Sony chronicles a riveting chapter in the twentieth-century drug wars: the exclusive inside story of the American lawman and his dangerous eight-year hunt that captured El Chapo the world s most wanted drug kingpin who evaded the law for more than a decade. This cinematic crime story following the relentless investigative work of Hogan and his team unfolds at breakneck speed, taking the reader behind the scenes of one of the most sophisticated and dangerous counter-narcotics operations in the history of the United States and Mexico. Snacks and tea will be served. Copies of the book are available at the library. Book Sale at The Dalles Library The Friends of the Library are holding a book sale on Saturday, March 23rd, from 9:00 until noon. This sale will take place at the Book Barn, located in the upper parking lot. If you have books to donate for the sale, please have them here by March 16th, so the Friends have time to sort through them. Remember, they do not accept text books, encyclopedias, or Reader s Digest Condensed books.
