2 POSTERS PROMOTING LITTER PREVENTION Small Posters Description Students create a small poster to promote litter prevention. Point Value 100 points per poster participation points! Required Dimensions: 8.5 X 11 Number of Posters Created Number of Participants POSTERS PROMOTING LITTER PREVENTION Large Posters Description Students create a small poster to promote litter prevention. Posters must be displayed in prominent areas with high visibility (i.e. gym, library, cafeteria, etc). Point Value 250 points each NOTE: You could make a collage of your school s best small posters on poster board for these points. participation points! Required Dimensions: 22 X 28 standard sized poster/bristle board Number of Posters Created Number of Participants HINT: The top poster from each school can be submitted in the Litter Prevention Poster Contest Set up an Idle Free Zone Point Value 2000 points signage, make announcements and send literature home with students to promote your new idle free zone. An Idle Free Zone is simply a chosen area where cars are not permitted to be left running with or without people in them. Often times, when waiting for others or making a quick trip, people will leave their cars running while not actually driving anywhere. Not only is this a waste of gas, but it is also causing unnecessary pollution and emissions. 14

5 Green Tip of the Day Point Value 50 points per tip Description Students announce an interesting environmental tip over the PA system. Points will be given for only one tip per day. Check off each day during the race that you complete this task. One thousand points will be awarded regardless of the number of participants. Students bring their lunches and snacks in reusable containers and beverages in bottles. No waste is disposed of except organics (i.e. banana peel, orange peel, apple Date of Waste-less Lunch Day 17
6 Best Before and After Photos Point Value 2500 points Description The school with the most drastic change from the before and after photos required in the Week One and Six Clean School Checklists will earn 2500 points. There must be a minimum of four photos showing four sides of the school for both the before and after photos. In most cases more than four photos will be needed to show the work and effort your school has made during the race. There will only be ONE winner. Poetic Prevention Point Value 100 points/class Description Create poetry on the theme of litter prevention or on the theme of being idle free. Poetry can be any style and there are no length restrictions. Students can write as many poems as they want and still receive 100 points per poem. This can be a great activity for an English class. Have fun and let your Estimated Time Minimum duration: 30 minutes Suggested Duration: Full class period Number of Poems Submitted Outdoor Litter Bins Point Value Description 1000 points/bin By purchasing and placing litter bins outside and around the school building, schools will be awarded 1000 points/bin. There is no limit to the number of outdoor litter bins your school installs. Points are given only to NEW litter bins. Bins existing previously will not accumulate points. Bin MUST have lids WANT EXTRA POINTS?? Decorate your litter bins any way you like to gain more points. Adding a little color and designs will earn your school an extra 200 points per bin. 7 Beverage Container Recycling Blitz Point Value 500/ 1000/ 1500 etc. Description Earn points and money with a Recycling Blitz! Collect to earn 500 points, 10,000+to earn 1000 points, 15,000+ earns 1500 points and so on. If a school of 500 students had everyone bring in 2 pop six weeks, the school would have 30,000 cans and 3000 points for the school! Beyond the points for the Race, each can is worth $0.10 each at our local bottle depot! So using the same scenario above, by the end of the six weeks the school will have made $3000 CASH! NOTE: it is the school s responsibility to take the bottles accumulated to the Bottle Depot. Please refer to for location information. Points will not be awarded until week 6. # of Recyclables Collected Point Value 500 points will be awarded 500 points for each bathroom or stairwell cleaned. Schools are required to have at least one before and one after photo; however extras such as work in progress photos are encouraged as well! additional supplies. 19

9 Host a Litter Free Event Point Value 1000 points Description Create a litter free event checklist, promote and implement a litter free event. This could be any event during the 6 week race where students are involved (i.e. sports game, dance, etc). Make announcements before, during and after the event to ensure that all refuse from participants is disposed of properly. Despite the announcements, not everyone may follow them, therefore requiring a check to be done, picking up any litter left from the event. Submissions for the speak-off can be in the form of a speech, a rant or a monologue. 10 Create a PSA/Short Film PSA Point Value 2000 points/psa Requirements Duration: seconds Storyboard is required. Storyboard and PSA must be submitted to Jillian. Short Film Point Value 1000 points are the same as that of the PSA (around seconds), however they may be longer. Requirements Duration: seconds. Storyboard is required. Storyboard and PSA must be submitted to Jillian. NOTE: Have your PSA/Short Film hosted on YouTube for an extra 200 points and your school s website for an extra 300 points! Your PSA/Short Film could end up on television! Please ensure that topics remain on a local level. Number of participants: What are you providing: PSA Short Film Topics Selected: NOTE: A story board is a sequence of drawings representing shots planned for a video. Providing a storyboard shows us that you have thought out the video in advance. Comic Point Value 100 points per frame; max 1000 points per comic submitted Description Students create an illustrated comic. Students are awarded 100 points per frame with a maximum 1000 points earned per comic, however, there is no length constraint. Students must create a comic on litter prevention. Comics must be submitted to Jillian. Number of submissions 22
11 Recycled Rhythms Point Value 1000 points per song Description Students are required to make musical instruments out of recyclables (i.e. pop bottles, cans, etc) then create and record a song. Add lyrics to the song on the theme of litter prevention or idling and receive an extra 1000 points per song, that s 2000 points total! Music can be any style and length. Additional Clean Ups Point Value 1000 points each Description Schools that choose to do additional Clean Ups will be awarded with 1000 points. The additional Clean Ups must go beyond the school and into the surrounding neighborhood. Clean a vacant involvement is mandatory. At least four photos are required throughout each Clean Up. NOTE: Remember to call to let us know when and where we can pick up full bags of litter. Registrations must occur between April 23 and June 1. 23
12 Point Value 2000 points Description During the Race, a contest for the best poster promoting litter prevention will be held. The participant who submits the chosen poster will earn 2000 points for his/her school and will be awarded with an individual prize. Only ONE entry is permitted per school. Therefore, schools may be required to select a poster from a number of submissions to enter into the contest. NOTE: The entry must be submitted to the RMWB by Friday, May 25 at 3:30 PM (end of week 5). There are no size requirements. Please ensure the school s name is on the back of the poster. And record the student s name for your records. Green Initiatives Point Value 100 points/initiative Description List any environmental or green initiatives your school practices or promotes. not qualify for these points.
