3 COMPANY DANCER & PARENT POLICY PACKET What does it mean to be a Company Dancer at Addicted 2 Dance Company? Participation on A2D Company (Competition Team) is by invitation only. The Artistic Director and professional staff determine the students that they feel will be most suited for the current team based on technique proficiency, work ethic, ability to comprehend quickly, personality, ability to work well with the others in the group, and performance ability. The A2D COMPANY is an elite group of dancers who are not only talented but are also great role models for A2D and the community. A2D COMPANY DANCERS participate in several events throughout the year including competitions, fundraisers, local performances and conventions. Dance competitions are a major activity in the dan e orld. The offer stage e perien e, a fun a to sho one s hard ork, edu ation o ser ing other students from other areas, friendship and self confidence. The ADDICTED 2 DANCE COMPANY offers COMPANY classes to the students who want to be performers and are motivated to do her/his best. Company Dancers must also demonstrate a good attitude toward correction, good attendance, punctuality, be serious dancers and have a healthy attitude toward being a company dancer as well as camaraderie with teammates. RECREATION CLASS LEVEL ASSIGNMENTS: Company Dancers are required to take additional recreation classes. Miss Aubrey recommends recreational classes to each company team member based on the dancer s audition. Our professional staff will determine which classes are best suited for each dancer to ensure proper training. Careful consideration is given to potential, ability to comprehend quickly, natural body lines, maturity in applying corrections, and work ethic. Dancers are placed in the most appropriate and challenging class for them. Sometimes the teacher will determine that a dancer needs to be placed in a different class than what was originally assigned. Should your child come home disappointed with their placement, it is your responsibility as a parent to remind them that hard work yields improvement. They should work harder than ever and prove to their teacher that they deserve to be moved. Please do not emphasize class levels with your dancer or with other parents and dancers. That is ultimately detrimental to the student s performance. The level is not important. Your child s progress is what is important. Focus on the work-not the level. Remember that each child is unique and will progress according to her/his ability. Beginning Pointe: Pointe is the most demanding genre of dance. A student will be invited to take pointe when the teacher has determined, by careful observation, that the student is ready. Beginning pointe before a student is ready increases the potential for injury. A2D Company Dancer & Parent Policy Packet Page 3 of 21
4 The Addicted 2 Dance Company Dancers Company Teams are committed to approximately 3-5 mandatory competitions & conventions each dance season. The chosen competitions and their dates are in this packet. Depending on the distance of the competition site, an overnight hotel stay may be desired by the dance family. Additional events and opportunities to perform may arise throughout the year. These events give the teams extra chances to present their routines and be in front of audiences, which every dancer loves! Competitions schedule dances anytime between Friday evening and Sunday afternoon. A2D does not know on which day the dancers will be performing until the week of the actual competition; therefore, you will need to leave your entire weekend available. Families and dancers are urged to carefully consider the time and financial commitment, adherence to the competition rules and regulations as well as attendance in class before accepting the invitation to join the A2D Company Dance Team. 5 A2D Company Taking Dance To The Next Level! To be on any company team is a privilege, therefore admission to these classes is by audition and invitation only. Once in a group, a student does not necessarily remain in that particular group for his/her entire schooling. A student moves at his/her own rate of development determined by A2D s expert dance instructors. Students in this program are exposed to all disciplines of dance. Each student is required to take ballet classes and a technique class in addition to their company class. A dancer s education is expanded by the opportunity to study other styles of dance. Solos, duos and trios are also by invitation only. Attendance is crucial in this program and only 3 classes will be excused. If you are not feeling well you should come to class and watch. After you have missed 3 classes you may be asked to leave the class for the remainder of the year. There are no refunds to costumes, tuition or fundraising. We know how expensive costumes, recording studio fees and competition fees can be. Therefore, competition FUNdraisers will be set up to provide financial support to our dancers! We ask that all company team members participate in the FUNdraisers. Remember, it s a team effort! Time Commitment Your time is precious and there is not enough time in the day to do everything. Please ask yourself the following questions before accepting the invitation to be on company and / or also accepting a solo, duo or trio performance. What year are you in school? Will you be taking the SAT s, searching for colleges? )s it a Bat Mitzvah year for you? Are you involved in other activities (sports, theater, drama, etc.?) Team You should be very proud if you have been offered a spot on A2D s company dance team and / or offered a solo, duo or trio. Being a part of A2D s team is no different than being part of any other team. )t requires a time commitment by the dancer and the family. It requires a financial commitment. YOU are given a part to play you are part of a team. When a player is not present the company team cannot function as an entire unit. If a dancer misses due to an injury, absence, etc. the dancer may be pulled from a section of the choreography. Absence We are requesting that common sense be used when your child is sick. A fever, stomach issues, strep throat, contagious disease please stay home. If your child has a physical injury, she/he should attend classes to observe and learn the choreography. 6 Suspension/Dismissal Policy A2D understands that suspension and/or dismissal decisions will not be made lightly and that this most difficult decision will be made solely by the artistic director, Miss Aubrey, for the benefit of the entire company team. No suspension or dismissal will be sudden or without ample warning, unless it is the result of extreme disrespect for A2D s Company team, any of its staff members, or policies. Parent Requirements and Policies A2D recognizes and appreciates the support given by parents with their time and financial commitment. Miss Aubrey and her professional team of teachers and staff work together and take into consideration age and level of talent when placing the dancers in classes. You have the right to understand what expectations are placed on your child. This begins with clear communication and consistency from Miss Aubrey, the instructors and the A2D staff. Parent/ Dance Instructor Relationship Communication you should expect from the A2D instructor: Expectations the instructor (s) has for your dancer and the class Times of all rehearsals and performances Company requirements props (if needed), alterations and/or additions to costumes, which require additional fees Class rules and expectations for choreography Communication A2D instructors expect from dancers Notification of any schedule conflicts in advance in writing via Office@a2dance.com Notification of any injury Special concerns in regard to Miss Aubrey s philosophy & expectations As your child becomes involved in the company dance team she/he will experience some of the most rewarding moments of her/his life. It is important to understand that there also may be times when things do not go the way you or your child wishes. When the concerns listed above occur, please encourage your daughter/son to discuss these items with the instructor and Miss Aubrey. )t is A2D s policy to always have two adults present when having conversations with a dancer and/or parent. Miss Aubrey and the A2D staff have an open-door policy to discuss the emotional well-being of your child. Contact the Office Staff at office@a2dance.com or (215) to set up an appointment with all parties concerned. Appropriate concerns to discuss with instructors The treatment of your child mentally and physically Ways to help your son/daughter improve Concerns about your child s behavior Page 6 of 21 A2D Company Dancer & Parent Policy Packet
7 It is very difficult to accept your dancer (s) not performing as much as you may hope. Remember: the instructors and Miss Aubrey are professionals. They take into consideration the level, ability, maturity, talent, focus, work ethic, and physical condition/injuries, attendance and outside commitments. Increased absences result in missing choreography. Therefore, the dancer will not perform in certain parts of the dance. Issues not appropriate to discuss with instructors Performance time solos, duos, trios, levels in class, and amount of dance time Performance strategy, choreography and competition choices Other student dancers There are situations that may require a conference between the instructor, Miss Aubrey and the parents/guardians. When these conferences are necessary, the following procedure should be followed to help promote a resolution. If you have a concern to discuss with the instructor - Please use the following procedures: Please do not attempt to confront an instructor before or after class, rehearsal or a performance. These can be emotional times for both the parents/guardians and the instructor. Meetings of this nature do not promote a resolution. Contact the Office Staff at office@a2dance.com or (215) to set up an appointment with all parties concerned. Dancer Drop-Off Please do not block the street to stop and drop! Please refrain from dropping off your dancer in the middle of the street - Cavalier Drive - in front of the studio. Please pull forward into the parking lot and out of the lanes of traffic to drop off your dancer next to the sidewalk. Young dancers should be walked into the dance studio with an adult. This is at the request of the Ambler Police and for the safety of our dancers, families and others who patronize businesses in Ambler. Privacy Policy The A2D faculty & staff will only discuss your child s information. A2D is not permitted and will not release or discuss the enrollment of students in classes. Medication Policy If your child is permitted to take Advil, Tylenol, etc. YOU MUST purchase a bottle of the medication, put your child s name and permitted dosage on the bottle and submit it to the front desk in a Ziploc bag. By doing this - you are giving A2D permission to dispense this medicine to your child. Company Injury/Understudy Policy A2D instructors and staff work extremely hard to educate dancers in the proper techniques to prevent injuries related to dance. However, injuries can and do still occur throughout the dance year. It is the A2D Company Dancer & Parent Policy Packet Page 7 of 21
8 company dancer s responsibility to immediately notify Miss Aubrey about any injuries (large or small) that may impact company classes, rehearsals, performances, and/or competitions. A2D reserves the right to use an understudy (selected by Miss Aubrey and the competition team instructor) as a result of a company injury. This will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis and any decisions on the use of an understudy would be discussed with both the injured company dancer and his/her parent. Missed Class Make-Up Policy If a company dancer misses a required company class it will be required for the company dancer to make up this choreography. Some options include scheduling a private lesson or working with a teammate. Tuition Expenses for recreation and Company Classes Please sit as a family and calculate your approximate expenses for the year before committing to your company team (s). Dance is an expensive activity. Class Observation Observers are not allowed in class. This is disrupting to the students and the class. Each studio is video monitored with feeds to flat screens in our Parent Lounge. Parent Lounge Out of concern for our students and their families, the following rules apply to the Parent Lounge: Children under ten years of age are not to be left in the waiting area/lobby without parental supervision. Parents are required to supervise their child ren and limit their child ren s noise level and behavior to prevent disruptions, reduce confusion, and make everyone s wait quiet. Students are to take all belongings with them into class. Company Dance is not responsible for lost, stolen, or damaged items. Personal items that are left behind are placed in the lost-and-found box. Food, gum, and beverages are permitted in the waiting area only, not the dance studio. There are breaks for water during shoe and class changes. You may have food in the waiting room but please dispose of your trash properly. Spills and garbage ruin the floor, attract bugs, and wreck the studio for the students and parents that follow you. Be considerate of others! Please refrain from waiting and gathering in the front lobby/office area. Apprenticeship Apprenticeship is by invitation only. The Artistic Director invites students to be an Apprentice based on technique proficiency, work ethic, leadership qualities, demonstration of concern for others, responsibility traits, personality, and ability to comprehend quickly. 11 Company Dance Team Structure Layout The Addicted 2 Dance Company is growing together in technical movement, training and bonding. In addition to Attendance, Attitude & Attire Dancers are assigned to TEAMS based on ability: technique, form and performance abilities. Moving forward, the plan is to grow together as a team, striving for excellence in performance, technique, team showmanship and style. A2D Company Team members will have exposure to all forms and styles of dance, including: ballet, tap, jazz, modern, hip hop, contemporary, lyrical and improvisation. This is part of our initiative to grow as a team striving TOGETHER to achieve excellence in all forms and styles of dance so that we can better align ourselves with the competition world. Each dancer has a schedule based on her/his needs. All dancers must continue recreational classes in all forms in order to continue on any company team. The 2-hour Company Team rehearsals are broken into 3, 40-minute pieces. The classes will include: 3 choreographers, 3 costumes, 3 different tights, 3 different shoes and any accessories. All necessary shoes should be brought into the studio at beginning of class. The charge for this 2-hour class = $800 per season, plus the required technique class is $400 per season.
