TEAM CD SEPT 09 FINAL 3/7/09 15:15 Page 2 TEAM SEPTEMBER / OCTOBER 2009 Track 1: Introductions Ben: Welcome to TEAM Radio. I m Ben... Nicky:... and I m Nicky. We ve got a great show for you today. Ben: We hope you all had a nice summer and have now got your first new issues of TEAM magazine. Nicky: So what s on the show today? Ben: First, we ll find out how much you cost your parents. Nicky: And we re talking to some teens about the new food in Britain s schools. Ben: And we ve got football! Our TEAM reporter Myles is at Wembley stadium. Myles is asking England football fans about the new England kit. Track 2: Special Report Nicky: Ben, how much do you think British parents spend on an average teenager every year? Ben: Teenagers today have quite a lot of things, don t they? An ipod, a mobile phone, maybe a games console, like a Nintendo Wii, then you ve got clothes, shoes... Nicky: And don t forget a laptop or PC in their room. Ben: So I d guess it must be about 4,000 a year. Nicky: We ll see if you re right in a minute. We ve got two teens in the studio with us Adam and Mia. Hi, guys. Adam & Mia: Hi, Nicky. Nicky: Do you think Ben s right 4,000 a year? Mia? Mia: It sounds a lot to me. If you gave me 4,000 right now, I could buy a lot with that. I think 2,000, maybe! Adam: Yeah, I don t think my parents spend that much on me I d say 1,000, max. 2

TEAM CD SEPT 09 FINAL 3/7/09 15:15 Page 3 Nicky: I think you ll all be surprised then. It s 9,000 a year! Ben, Adam & Mia: What? Are you sure? Nine thousand? Nicky: Yes it s true! The average teenager costs their parents 9,000. Mia, look at the list of things teenagers have on page 9 of TEAM. Which ones have you got? Mia: I ve got an MP3 player and a mobile. I don t get a new MP3 player every year like some of my friends... but I do get a new mobile on my birthday. I hardly ever get haircuts, because I ve got really long hair. Obviously I ve got clothes and shoes, and I eat! I get 10 allowance a week that s for the cinema or when I meet my friends in town. Nicky: It sounds quite a lot when you list it like that, doesn t it? Mia: Hm, yes it does! Nicky: How about you, Adam? How much pocket money do you get? Adam: I don t get any. I ve got a job in a pub. I do about two days a week, preparing food. I earn about 35 a week. Nicky: So what do you buy with that? Adam: All my stuff - I use it to buy clothes and sports kit, and to pay for nights out at the weekend. Nicky: Do you think your parents spend 9,000 a year on you? Adam: No way. I don t think they spend that much on themselves. My dad s out of work and my mum s a nurse, so we don t have much money to spare. Nicky: How do you feel about having less stuff than your mates? Adam: I m cool with it. Nicky: Thanks to Mia and Adam. How much do you cost? Check out The Bill on page 9 of this month s TEAM. Track 3: Sport Ben: The England football team are playing a match at Wembley Stadium tonight. They re playing Croatia in their World Cup qualifying group. Let s go over to Myles. Hi, Myles. Are there many fans there yet? Myles: Yes, Ben, there are quite a few Croatia fans here. They ve got their famous red and white check 3

TEAM CD SEPT 09 FINAL 3/7/09 15:15 Page 4 shirts. And there are a lot of England fans too in red, white and blue. I m showing the England fans photos of different England kits from the last hundred years. You can see them on pages 6 and 7 of TEAM. Let s see what our fans think of them. First, tell us your names. Jess: Hi, I m Jess. Sam: I m Sam. Rochelle: My name s Rochelle. Freddie: I m Freddie. Myles: Jess, which is your favourite? Jess: I like the Bobby Moore shirt from I like the long sleeves. It s smart. Myles: Sam, how about you? Do you like Bobby s shirt? Sam: He looks a bit like Superman to me. But Kevin Keegan looks even worse. Look at his hair what an idiot! Myles: Rochelle? What do you think? Rochelle: I like Kevin Keegan s tiny shorts! And Gary looks good. The blue collar on his shirt is nice. Myles: Freddie, do you like Gary s kit? Freddie: No, Billy Wright looks the best. The V-neck is great. He looks like he s going to win! Myles: Freddie, you re wearing the new England shirt. You obviously like it! Freddie: Yeah, I love it. Most people don t like it because it s really plain, but I like it. Myles: Rochelle? Rochelle: Yeah, it s a bit formal, but it s really smart. Myles: Jess, what do you think of the badge? Jess: I love it. The three lions are a really good symbol for England. Myles: Sam, are you going to buy one? Sam: At 50! You must be joking! It s way too expensive. Myles: Are England going to win today? Fans: Yeah! Come on, England! Eng-land! Myles: Back to the studio! 4

TEAM CD SEPT 09 FINAL 3/7/09 15:15 Page 5 Track 4: The Ad Voice: This is an important safety announcement. Flu viruses will live for hours on hard surfaces, making flu very easy to spread. So whenever you sneeze or cough, always remember... Catch it! Trap the germs in a tissue. Bin it! Throw the tissue away. Kill it! Wash your hands to get rid of any remaining germs. To hear the latest information on swine flu, call Track 5: TEAM Phone-In Nicky: This month s TEAM Phone-In is all about school food. Ben: I remember school food it was chips with everything! Nicky: Not any more! Ben: No, this September, the British government is introducing new rules about food in school canteens. What are the rules, Nicky? Nicky: Food has to be healthy. Each meal has to contain the correct amount of salt, sugar and fat. Ben: So what kind of meals will they serve? Nicky: Chicken and salad, pasta and vegetable sauce, spinach and liver... Ben: Spinach and liver? Yuk! No one will choose spinach and liver! Why are they doing this? Nicky: They want to fight the problem of obesity among British teenagers. Britain has the worst record in Europe one in three young people in Britain is either overweight or obese. Ben: But it s not just a British problem. It affects many European countries too, like Spain and Italy. Nicky: So what do you think? Should the government tell us what to eat? Ben: Call or text us at TEAM Radio. Nicky: First, it s Lizzie on the phone. Where are you calling from, Lizzie? 5

TEAM CD SEPT 09 FINAL 3/7/09 15:15 Page 6 Lizzie: I m in London, Nicky. Nicky: What do you think about the new rules, Lizzie? Lizzie: I don t think these new rules will work. We know about healthy eating, but you want something tasty at lunchtime, not just salad! Nicky: Thanks, Lizzie. Now, here s a text from Joe in Cardiff. He says, The school canteen will be empty at lunchtime! The whole school will be in the kebab shops and fish and chip shops in town. Ben: Now we ve got Eddie on the line. Hi, Eddie. Is this a good idea? Eddie: I actually think this will work. There are so many fat kids around we ve got to do something. Ben: Do you eat a healthy diet, Eddie? Eddie: Yeah, definitely. But food is only half of the problem. Loads of my friends spend their whole time in front of screens TV, Internet, Nintendo. They never do any exercise. Ben: Thanks for your call, Eddie. There s time for one more text. Nicky? Nicky: Yes, here s one from Yousuf. He says, School canteen food needs to be much healthier. If the government doesn t change it, no one will. Ben: That s all from TEAM Radio. Thanks for listening. Nicky: Yes, and Happy Hallowe en. TEAM NOVEMBER / DECEMBER 2009 Track 6: Introductions Nicky: Welcome to TEAM Radio. I m Nicky... Ben:... and I m Ben. We ve got a busy show for you today. Nicky: Yes, we re kicking off with sport. Ben: This month s TEAM Phone-In is in the classroom: Should girls and boys be taught in separate classes? Nicky: We ve also got a location report from Australia, where we re talking to some schoolies. 6

TEAM CD SEPT 09 FINAL 3/7/09 15:15 Page 7 Ben: What are schoolies? Nicky: You ll have to listen and find out! Track 7: Sport Nicky: I know you re a football fan, Ben. But what about basketball? Did you watch the big basketball game at London s O2 arena? Ben: The game between the Chicago Bulls and Utah Jazz? Yes, I saw the British players Ben Gordon and Luol Deng there. They were fantastic! Nicky: And there s a big school basketball tournament this December. Ben: Yes, we ve got two of the basketball team captains here David, who s the captain of the Moorgate Meteors. And Vanessa, who s the captain of the Highbury Dragons - two basketball stars for the future! David, is basketball becoming more popular in Britain? David: I d say yes. A year ago, nobody could name a single British basketball player. Now everyone knows the captain Robert Sullivan and the big NBA stars Ben Gordon and Luol Deng. Ben: I m still new to basketball. Vanessa, can you tell us some of the rules? Vanessa: Sure. You have a squad or team of 10 players. You re allowed to have five players on the court at one time. David: You have to shoot the ball through the other team s hoop to score. Vanessa: You get two points if you score from inside the circle and three points if you score from outside the circle. Ben: Is anyone allowed to score? Vanessa: Yes, and you can score from anywhere, except a throw-in. Ben: What about fouls? David: You mustn t push another player. You mustn t use bad language. And if you commit five fouls, you must leave the game. Nicky: There s a lot to remember! Does it keep you fit? Vanessa: Oh yeah, you have to be really fit to play well. 7

TEAM CD SEPT 09 FINAL 3/7/09 15:15 Page 8 Nicky: And is it fun? Vanessa: It s brilliant! David: It s the best sport there is! Ben: Good luck in the school competition. Let us know if you win. Track 8: TEAM Phone-In Nicky: Today we re asking: Should girls and boys be taught in separate classes? Ben: I went to an all-boys school. Was your school mixed, Nicky? Nicky: Yes, it was. Ben: Did the boys distract you? Nicky: Yes, they did. They pulled our hair and made stupid comments! Ben: New research shows that girls in single sex schools get better exam results than girls in mixed sex schools. Nicky: So, girls do better without the boys! Well, do you agree? Call or text us at TEAM Radio. Ben: Here s our first call it s Francesca, calling from Leeds. Hi, Francesca. Francesca: Hi, Ben. Hi, Nicky. Ben: Do you go to a mixed school, Francesca? Francesca: Yes, and there s one thing that really annoys me. Ben: What s that? Francesca: The idea that there are boys subjects and girls subjects. I really love science and computers, and everyone says, Why are you doing boys subjects? They make you feel like a freak. Nicky: You re right, Francesca. When I was at school, all the girls did art and textiles, and all the boys did computer science and wood tech. Ben: Here s a text from Nick in Luton. Nick says, You have to learn to live and work in the real world and the real world isn t single sex, is it? That s a good point, Nick. You need to learn social skills as well as how to speak French. Nicky: Our next caller is Toby. Hi, Toby, where are you? 8

TEAM CD SEPT 09 FINAL 3/7/09 15:15 Page 9 Toby: I m in Brentwood. I agree with Nick. What s the point of having loads of A grades if you can t get a girlfriend? Ben: Thanks, Toby. I m just looking at the s coming in. There s one from Mo. She says, I go to a girls school and it s much more relaxed. We spend plenty of time with boys outside school we don t need to see them in our lessons as well! Nicky: Now let s talk to Ryan. Hi, Ryan. Ryan: Hi, Nicky. Here s my idea. Why don t we have mixed schools but have separate girls and boys lessons? We can mix at lunchtime and in the breaktimes! Ben: Great idea, Ryan. You should write to the government and suggest it. Track 9: The Ad Mrs Parker: Hello. Jack: Mrs Parker? It s Jack. Mrs Parker: Jack? Do you know what time it is? Jack: Leo and me... we re at the hospital. Mrs Parker: Hospital? What s going on? Where s Leo? Jack: We were just having a few drinks... Mrs Parker: What do you mean having a few drinks? Jack: The doctor says you d better come. I mean, please, just hurry. Mrs Parker: Jack, what s happened to Leo? Male Voiceover: Seventy Australians under the age of 25 will be hospitalised by injuries caused by alcohol in an average week. Don t turn a night out into a nightmare. Australian Government, Canberra. Track 10: School Stories Nicky: We re staying on the other side of the world for our location report. Steve is in Queensland in north-east Australia. Lucky Steve! It s summer down under, while we re all freezing back here in the UK winter. 9

TEAM CD SEPT 09 FINAL 3/7/09 15:15 Page 10 Steve: I m reporting from Surfer s Paradise on the Gold Coast, in Queensland. That s in the north-east of Australia. Thousands of Australian school leavers are here for a beach party a week-long beach party! They re called Schoolies and this week is Schoolies week. Every year up to 40,000 Schoolies come here after the end of school exams. I m in a café here on the beach at Surfer s Paradise and I m talking to three schoolies Kate, Marcia and Michael. You guys arrived here on Saturday. Are you having a good time? Kate: We re having the best time. We swim and surf every day. Marcia: Yeah, we all went in the sea in our school uniform on Saturday! It was awesome. Michael: In the evenings, there are bands on the beach. We stay up most of the night drinking and dancing. Marcia: Yeah, then we sleep all morning. Get up about midday, have breakfast... Michael:... and start all over again. Steve: There are always stories in the media about fights and binge-drinking in Schoolies week... Is that fair? Michael: No! It s not fair! Most of the trouble is started by toolies. Steve: Toolies! Who are toolies? Kate: Toolies stands for too old for school. They come to the party without an invitation so they are gate-crashers. They drink too much and start fights. Steve: If the party s on a beach, it must be difficult to stop them. Michael: There are security guards and we all wear special wristbands. Look, here s mine, round my wrist. Steve: I see! What do your parents think about you coming here? Kate: Er, well, they don t like it. They gave me lots of advice. Don t drink. Stay with your friends. Steve: Do you follow their advice? Marcia: Yes, but we re here to have a good time. We ve worked hard for our exams this is our way of relaxing. Michael: My mum told me to keep 40 cents in my pocket. That was good advice. Steve: Why? 10

TEAM CD SEPT 09 FINAL 3/7/09 15:15 Page 11 Michael: I couldn t find my mates. And I didn t have my cell phone - I lost it somewhere in the sand! So I needed the 40 cents to call my mates and find out where they were! Steve: Thanks for talking to us, guys. Have fun and stay safe. Ben: That s it for today s show. Thanks for listening. Nicky: Yes, and have a great Christmas and New Year! TEAM JANUARY / FEBRUARY 2010 Track 11: Introductions Nicky: Welcome to TEAM Radio. I m Nicky... Ben:... and I m Ben. Nicky: On today s show, we re talking about your privacy How would you feel if the government read all your texts and s, and looked at your Facebook page? Ben: We ve got a special guest coming into the studio. We re talking to Lucy, who is sixteen and is fighting cancer. Nicky: And then we ll be talking about behaviour in the classroom. What are the problems and what are the answers? Track 12: TEAM Phone-In Nicky: The Big Debate in this month s TEAM is all about privacy - your privacy. Ben: Yes, we re talking about techno-privacy. Nicky: We all send s and post information about ourselves on our Facebook or My Space pages. Ben: And we all send texts and make calls on our mobiles. Nicky: But do you think about who is watching, reading or listening? Ben: The government wants to listen in to our phone calls and look at our s and Facebook pages. 11

TEAM CD SEPT 09 FINAL 3/7/09 15:15 Page 12 Nicky: Why? Because they say that terrorists and criminals are using these technologies. Ben: What do you think? Is it OK for the government to do this? Text, call or us at TEAM Radio. Nicky: Let s talk to Elsa, who s in Derby. Hi, Elsa. Elsa: Hi, Nicky. I don t really care who reads my Facebook page. I ve got nothing to hide! Nicky: And what about your texts and mobile phone calls? Elsa: My text messages? I don t think anyone would understand my texts to my mates! No. I m not bothered! Ben: I ll read this text from Laurie in Brighton. He has a different opinion. He says, This is a total invasion of privacy. My texts and s are private. Keep Out! Nicky: But here s a different view from Christina in London. She says, If it helps the police stop terrorists, then I m in favour. The London bombers in 2005 used their mobile phones to set off their bombs. We don t want that to happen again. Ben: And on the line is Dwight, also from London. Hi, Dwight. Dwight: Hi, Ben. Yeah, I agree with Christina. We live in a high tech world, and it s just not possible to keep texts, calls and Internet searches private. If you don t want people to read your messages, you d better start writing letters. Nicky: Thanks, Dwight. Track 13: The Ad Nicky: Do you sometimes look in the mirror and think, Oh no! Another bad hair day? Imagine if you looked in the mirror and saw no hair. That s often the tough reality for teenagers with cancer. Ben: You might think cancer is an adult disease. But each day in Britain, six teenagers find out they have cancer. Nicky: Lucy is 16 and she has cancer. Hi, Lucy. How are you? Lucy: I m doing OK at the moment, Nicky. Yeah, I m doing OK. Nicky: Tell us about yourself. What kind of music do you like? Lucy: I love eighties music. My top band are The Smiths and for me the King of the Eighties is Michael Jackson. 12

TEAM CD SEPT 09 FINAL 3/7/09 15:15 Page 13 Nicky: Me too! And I love eighties fashions. Lucy: Yeah, I m always looking in second-hand shops for eighties vintage. Nicky: I know you ve got some interesting pets. What are they? Lucy: I d love to have a dog, but we live in a flat, so that s out. I ve got two pet rats one white and one black. They re gorgeous. The boy is called Tintin and the girl is called Wonderwoman. Nicky: So you love the eighties and rats... what do you hate? Lucy: I hate text talk, and I hate having cancer. Nicky: When did you find out that you had cancer? Lucy: Last year. I ve got leukaemia. I started feeling really tired, so I went with my mum to see my doctor. He realised what was wrong. So I was lucky. I had treatment right away, and I m going to be fine. Nicky: You re raising awareness about teenagers with cancer this week, Lucy. What s your message? Lucy: The worst thing about having cancer is feeling lonely. You love your mates, but you feel different. So it s brilliant to meet other teens with cancer. You can laugh and relax together. We don t talk about cancer all the time, in fact we hardly ever do, we talk about bands and clothes, like anyone else. Nicky: How do you meet other teens with cancer? Lucy: Through the Teenage Cancer Trust. They re brilliant. They put on loads of events and give you masses of information on their website. They ve really helped me. Nicky: Thanks so much for talking to us, Lucy. Good luck with your campaign. Track 14: School Stories Nicky: I couldn t believe this story when I first read it: Bad behaviour in schools wastes five weeks lesson time each year. Ben: Five weeks? Teachers are spending five whole weeks just controlling a class? Nicky: Yes! A survey of more than 10,000 teachers in the UK asked them this question: How much lesson time do you spend on bad behaviour? The teachers said between 20 minutes and two hours a day. Nicky: What takes up all that time? Ben: The teachers have to settle the class at the beginning of the lesson. They have to get students to give in their homework. And they have to stop arguments or even fights. 13

TEAM CD SEPT 09 FINAL 3/7/09 15:15 Page 14 Nicky: We ve got some teens in the studio. Let s hear from them. Mia, Adam and Khalid are here. OK, guys, what s going on in our classrooms? Mia: It s not that bad! Pupils chat and don t pay attention, or they come to the lesson late. But I ve never seen anything worse than that. Ben: What s your experience, Khalid? Khalid: My class is worse! There are kids in my class who are always messing about. They are so disruptive! Ben: What kind of things do they do? Khalid: They chat all through the lesson. They throw things about. It s really hard to work with that going on. Ben: What does the teacher do? Khalid: She shouts at them. Then she sends them out of class. Then they have to go to the head teacher. It s annoying because they get more attention than the rest of us. Sometimes they take up half the lesson. Ben: Adam, what s it like in your school? Adam: The discipline is pretty good. If anyone behaves badly, the teacher puts their name in the detention book. If they behave badly again, she sends them out of class and they have to do a detention. Ben: Why do they behave better in your school than in Khalid s, do you think? Adam: I think it s because of our teachers. They are really strict. And our head teacher is really scary. Ben: So we need tougher teachers and horrible head teachers! I m glad I don t go to school anymore! Ben: That s it from TEAM Radio this month. Thanks for listening. Nicky: Yes, and we ll see you next time. Goodbye! 14
