Jenny: A screenager comes from two words: teenager and screen. James: And, what is a screenager? Jenny: Well, it s a teenager who spends a lot of time in front of a screen. In CROWN, it says that young people in Britain spend ten hours a day in front of a screen! James: Ten hours a day? That s a lot! What are they doing? Jenny: They re watching television, going on their computers, using mobile phones, playing on games consoles, playing with their ipods all these things have screens. James: We want to know: Are you a screenager? How much time do you spend in front of a screen? We ve got two teens with us here in the studio Millie and Paddy. Hi! Millie & Paddy: Hi, James. James: Millie, how old are you? Millie: I m 13. James: Do you think you re a screenager? Millie: Mm. I don t think so. James: Let s see! James: And do you text? Millie: Yeah, but I don t spend hours texting. Maybe 15 minutes on a school day. It s more at the weekends because I m not at school, so I need to text my friends. James: And what about video games? Do you play video games? Millie: I did when I was younger, but not anymore. I get a lot of homework, which takes time in the evening. James: Do you watch much TV? Millie: I watch a bit maybe half an hour a day. James: And on the way to school do you play on a games console or play games on your phone? Millie: No, I read, actually. Paddy: Yeah, at lunchtime we can go online in the library and we use computers in Maths class. So that s actually another hour at school so four hours on a computer in total. Jenny: Mm. How about TV? Do you watch TV? Paddy: When I get home from school, I watch TV for an hour. Then I do my homework and go outside. Sometimes I watch another hour before I go to bed. 3
