LAKELAND HIGH SCHOOL POM TEAM GUIDELINES The following guidelines apply to all members of the LHS Pom Team. These guidelines, along with and according to the Student Athlete Code of Conduct, apply on a twelve-month basis beginning with freshman year and ending with graduation. Participation in high school athletics is a PRIVELEDGE! The coach, under the direction of the L.H.S. Athletic Director, reserves the right to make the final decision on any situation that may arise, though we are guided by these guidelines. Please read the Student Athlete Code of Conduct carefully, as these rules are followed by the L.H.S. Pom team as well. Last updated: 3/1/10. NAME PURPOSE The name of the organization is the Lakeland High School Pom Team. The purpose of the organization is to perform at selected pep assemblies, home football games, home boys basketball games, competitions and any other activity approved by the coach and athletic director. MEMBERSHIP Each member must tryout each season (fall and winter). No member is guaranteed a spot on the team for the next season. Behavior issues from past seasons will be noted and considered during tryouts. This includes quitting the team after the teams have been chosen and posted or quitting mid-season. The coach makes the final decision on membership and the size of the teams. Scores will not be revealed but the coach will discuss areas for improvement with individuals. Specifics regarding judging categories for tryouts will be discussed prior to tryouts. The coach may hold mid-season tryouts to add new members to the team. ACADEMICS SCHOOL COMES FIRST!!! The L.H.S. Pom team expects all team members to maintain a 2.5 GPA or above and pass all classes each marking period. See Student Athlete Code of Conduct for details on academic probation (please note that our grade point requirements are higher than the basic MHSAA requirements). In the event that a student does not meet these grade guidelines, the student will be placed on academic probation and may not be eligible to practice and/or perform. This decision will be made with the coach, athletic director, student and parents. Coach will be flexible in allowing student time off of practice to improve grades, but this may result in that member being pulled from a routine if too many practices are missed. SAFETY All practices, performances and events will be supervised by the coach or adult approved by the athletic director. Events that do not involve practicing or performing (such as carwashes or bottle drives) may be supervised by parents without coach present.

SPORTSMANSHIP Good sportsmanship is expected by all team members and parents at all practices, events, performances and competitions. Any behavior that is unsportsmanship-like will result in disciplinary action by the coach and athletic director and may result in removal from the performance/event. VARSITY LETTER Varsity Pom Team members are eligible to EARN a Varsity Letter. The coach will determine the Varsity letter criteria. Varsity letter requirements will be explained in full to parents and team members. NO MEMBER IS GUARENTEED A VARSITY LETTER. Varsity letters will be awarded at the end of fall and winter Pom seasons. Coach will do a mid-season evaluation with each member regarding varsity letter status. PERFORMANCES PERFORMANCES ARE REQUIRED! They are not optional unless determined so by the coach. This includes competitions. All members will participate in all team performances unless excused or removed from by coach. Coach reserves the right to remove a member from a performance if her skills are not up to the performing standard. If you are injured, you are expected to attend performances in full uniform to support other members. Full uniform must be worn to school on the day of a performance and any other appropriate time determined by the coach. This applies even if you are not performing. Full uniform will be specified by the coach on the eve of the event, and may include dressing up, etc. Failure to do so may result in being removed from a routine. See attached dress code. PRACTICES The team will be notified in advance of practice dates and times. This may include weekend, evening or morning (before school) practices. Practice time will be APPROXIMATELY 8 hours/week. More practice time may be necessary and will be determined by the coach. ONLY THE COACH CAN EXCUSE A MEMBER FROM PRACTICE/EVENT. See attendance policy of details. ATTENDANCE Attendance policy attached. This policy WILL be enforced. COSTS/FUNDRAISING Poms is a SELF-FUNDED sport. This means that we do not get school or state funding. Your pay to play money goes towards coaches salaries and uniform purchasing, and additional team fundraising is necessary to keep the program running. Most team fundraisers that are required by the team will have a buy-out option, meaning instead of participating the member can chose to pay the money designated by coach

to replace her participation. Although, some team fundraisers may be required of all team members and will not have a buy-out option. There will be approximately one fundraiser in the summer, fall and winter to help decrease individual costs for team members. SUMMER CAMP In lieu of attending Mid American Pompon s costly summer camp, we will be holding a weeklong series of day camps at Lakeland High School. This will cost approximately $90 per Pommer and will be a great skill building and bonding experience for the team. Winter pom team members will be required to attend pom clinics or workshops; estimated cost of $50 total. PARENT PARTICIPATION Parents of team members are expected to participate in fundraising. The Pom team is self-funded and needs parent support. Typically, parents are expected to assist with one team fundraiser per season and work 4 hours of concession time for the LHS Athletic Boosters per Pom season (fall and winter). Parents will be offered a buy-out option for some team fundraisers, such as bottle drives. Parents will follow the parent/coach communication plan detailed in the Student Athlete Code of Conduct. Any issues should be discussed with the coach first, and then they athletic director may be contacted for further discussion. See parent code of conduct. BEHAVIOR ISSUES/SUBSTANCE ABUSE The Pom Team expects all members to behave in accordance with the L.H.S. Student Code of Conduct and Student Athlete Code of Conduct. The L.H.S. Pom team, in accordance to the LHS student athlete code of conduct, supports a zero tolerance policy for the use of drugs/alcohol. READ THIS POLICY CAREFULLY! This policy is in effect for non-school related activities during the school year AND season of participation: example, Saturday parties, etc.

LAKELAND HIGH SCHOOL POM TEAM VARSITY LETTER GUIDELINES Fall 2010 In order to earn a varsity letter in Poms, you need to meet ALL of the following requirements in full: 1. Perform in at least 80% of team performances. Additional performances may be assigned as extra credit (if not on original schedule). 2. Attend at least 80% of practices (and is actively practicing at them, not sitting out). 3. Participate in all required fundraisers. If absent, fundraising must be made up as assigned by coach. 4. Pom bill must be paid in full to receive a varsity letter. 5. Your uniform must be turned in clean and in good condition prior to earning your varsity letter. If not, then you must pay the full cost of its replacement before receiving your varsity letter. In addition to meeting the requirements above, you must earn a minimum of 5 out of the 10 points in EACH category listed below to earn a varsity letter. Deductions will be made at the coach and/or athletic director s discretion. (10) Follows LHS Pom Guidelines and LHS Student Athlete Code of Conduct, displays good sportsmanship and teamwork abilities. (10) Follows dress code, wears uniform at appropriate times (see pom dress code). (Each uniform or dress code violation = 1 or 2 point deduction depending on severity) ***A varsity letter will not be awarded to anyone disciplined for use of alcohol or drugs during the season of the offense (for out of season offenses, for the season their suspension is included in). ***Deductions for violations of Code of Conduct, Dress code, Pom Guidelines, behavior etc. during the summer season will count towards fall varsity letter as well. ***If you did not earn a varsity letter and feel you should have, contact coach to arrange an appeal meeting with coach and athletic director.

POM TEAM UNIFORM DRESS CODE As a member of the team, you are expected to follow the dress code at all times. NO EXCEPTIONS!!! This policy will be strictly enforced. Your uniform is on loan to you from the school. You are expected to turn it in at the end of the season in good condition, all necessary repairs made, clean, and in full as requested by coach. Failure to do so by the deadline will result in a fine up to $250 (see uniform contract). Your uniform includes your pom skirt, shell, body suit, and anything else designated as uniform by coach. Items that you ve paid for in full do not have to be turned in at the end of the season (shoes, dance pants, etc.) CARE OF YOUR POM UNIFORM: MACHINE WASH GENTLE CYCLE. LAY FLAT TO DRY. DO NOT PUT IN DRYER. DO NOT DRY CLEAN. 1. You may only wear your uniform at the times designated by coach. You will NEVER wear it on dates, Halloween, or lend it to someone, etc. 2. When wearing your uniform, to school or to games, please keep jewelry minimal. 3. Do not roll up your pom skirt waistband. Skirts cannot be shorter than 6 inches above the knee. 4. The only shoes you re allowed to wear with your uniform are white performance shoes, black performance shoes, or white/gray tennis shoes with laces (or another shoe approved by coach). NO flip flops, sandals, Ugg boots etc. EVER with your uniform. This includes during the school day. 5. The only pants you re allowed to wear under your uniform are black or blue dance pants. 6. Obviously, when wearing your pom skirt you must have grundies on. 7. You may put your warm up jacket, varsity jacket or winter jacket over your uniform if you re cold. NO sweatshirts, sweaters, t-shirts, long sleeve t shirts, etc. worn over or with your uniform, unless designated by coach. 8. When performing, your shoes are expected to be CLEAN and scuff free. You should have on makeup and lipstick for all performances as determined by coach. 9. The only socks you are allowed to wear with your uniform are low white socks. 10. The only thing worn under shell is the royal blue body suit and a bra. If not wearing bodysuit, make sure your bra straps are not showing. 11. On the days when the team is wearing the uniform to school, you must wear it and follow the dress code. If the team decides to dress up that day or wear designated pom sweatshirt, etc., you must wear the designated outfit with your team. Failure to do so may result in being removed from a routine. 12. When at a game where you perform, you are expected to show up on time and in uniform. You must stay in uniform for the remainder of the game as long as you are on school property. If approved by coach that day, you can change into your warm ups or other designated outfit for the remainder of the game. 13. When performing, you will arrive to the game with your hair ALREADY done and up as team agreed upon. Use only black, brown or blond ponytail holders. 14. DO NOT loan your pom apparel (sweatshirts, t shirts etc) to people NOT on the pom team. They are not allowed to wear them because they would be representing your team if they did.

Failure to abide by the uniform dress code will result in point deductions towards your varsity letter and may result in being removed from a performance. Think of your uniform like an army uniform! It s sacred and is NOT accessorized by miscellaneous items/clothing unless approved by coach! We must look professional at all times. If you have ANY questions regarding this policy, ask coach. LAKELAND HIGH SCHOOL POM TEAM GUIDELINES: ATTENDANCE POLICY 1. PRACTICES: The team will be notified in advance of practice dates and times. This may include weekend, evening or morning (before school) practices. Practice time will be APPROXIMATELY 8 hours/week. More practice time may be necessary and will be determined by the coach. 2. ABSENCES: If you will be late or absent from any pom practice, performance, fundraiser or obligation, you must notify Coach Jo or Coach Cheryl in advance. If the event begins in less than 24 hours, please notify us via telephone. Otherwise, you may do this via a written note, phone, text or , however YOU MUST RECEIVE A CONFIRMATION from one of the coaches to ensure the message was received. This applies EVEN IF YOU LEAVE SCHOOL ILL. In order for your absence or tardy to be excused, you must contact us prior to the designated start time of the event you will be missing. FAILURE TO NOTIFY COACH PRIOR TO THE START OF THE EVENT = 1 UNEXCUSED ABSENCE. One unexcused absence may be grounds for removal from a performance. You are expected to be present and actively practicing at 85% of practices for a given routine in order to perform that routine, even if your absences are excused. When you miss practice for any reason, you are responsible for learning what you missed and staying up to speed with the progress of the team when learning/perfecting a routine. You are also responsible for contacting your coaches/captains to find out what you missed and to receive any paperwork or announcements you missed. If you fall below 85% attendance for practices for a given routine but above or equal to 80% attendance for the practices for a given routine AND all your absences are excused, coach will arrange a tryout with you to see if you are eligible to perform that routine. Your coaches and captains will judge the tryouts. The goal of the tryouts is to ensure that you re not lagging behind the team in knowledge and skill of the routine.

If you are below 80% attendance for the practices for a given routine, you are not eligible to perform that routine, regardless of whether absences are excused or not. Exceptions to this rule will be rare, made only under special circumstances, and approved by the LHS athletic director. TARDIES: Arriving late to practice is unacceptable. Contact coaches by phone/text if you think you will be late so that your tardiness is excused. If you will be late to practice for any reason, YOU must call one of your coaches and let them know. IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to contact coach in order to be excused. Telling another team member to tell coach about an absence or tardy for you DOES NOT excuse your absence. Obviously, if you are ill, we do not expect you to attend practice. However, the attendance policy still applies and you must contact coach to excuse your absence. In addition, the 80% rule for performing still applies. This is not to punish you, but to ensure that we can rechoreograph formations, counts etc. in time for the performance. 3. PERFORMANCES: Performances are required. The coaches may remove a member from a performance due to absence/absences at practices prior to performances or if the team member has difficulty performing the routine. The coaches reserve the right to remove a team member from a routine at any time. 4. INJURIES: If you are injured, you are expected to notify a coach ASAP and seek proper medical treatment. This may include seeing the school trainer or your family doctor. You may need a parent/doctor note to resume practicing. If you are injured and unable to attend practice/event, you must notify a coach in advance. Despite your injury, you are still expected to attend practices, performances and events in full uniform even if you cannot physically practice/perform. Assume that we expect you to be at all practice/events unless we discuss it and decide otherwise. 5. PERFORMANCE/PRACTICE ELIGIBILITY: According to the L.H.S. Student Athlete Code of Conduct, you must be in school for three hours on the day of the performance in order to attend practice/performance on that day. Exceptions for school events or doctor appointments may be made by the coaches and athletic director when notified in advance. If you stay home sick from school, or attend less than three hours due to illness, you cannot attend any afterschool games or practices. An unexcused absence from any class may result in removal from routine (don t skip school!). Parents will be notified of any unexcused absences from class or poms. 6. PREPARATION: You are expected to come to practice/events fully dressed and prepared. This includes bringing poms, practice clothes, shoes, knee pads, etc. to every practice/event as well as anything else required by the coaches. You will receive 1 unexcused "tardy" for coming to the practice/event

without the required items. This also includes turning in forms to coach on time. Three unexcused tardies resulting from coming unprepared may also result in being removed from a performance. Athletic Parent Code of Conduct The essential elements of character building and ethics in athletics are embodied in the concept of sportsmanship and six core principles: sportsmanship, leadership, teamwork, responsibility, dedication, and professionalism. The highest potential of athletics is achieved when competition reflects these "six pillars of character". All parents who participate in Huron Valley Athletic Programs: 1. Will refrain from coaching their child or other players during games and practices. 2. Will respect the officials and their authority during games and will never question, discuss or confront coaches at the game field, and will take time to speak to coaches at an agreed upon time and place. 3. Will remember that student athletes participate to have fun and that the game is for youth, not adults. 4. Will help teach their child that doing one's best is more important than winning, so that my child will never feel defeated by the outcome of a game or his or her performance. 5. Will demand that their child treat other players, coaches, officials, and spectators with respect regardless of race, creed, color, sex or ability. 6. Will promote the emotional and physical well being of the student athletes ahead of any personal desire I may have for my own child to win. 7. Will not encourage any behaviors or practices that would endanger the health and well being of the student athletes. 8. Will be a positive role model for their child and encourage sportsmanship by showing respect and courtesy, and by demonstrating positive support for all players' coaches, officials, and spectators at every game, practice or sporting event. 9. Will not engage in any kind of unsportsmanlike conduct with any official, coach, player, or parent such as booing and taunting; refusing to shake hands; or using profane language or gestures. Parents or guests in violation of the code of conduct may be dismissed, suspended, or permanently expelled from future athletic contest. Huron Valley Schools will take the appropriate steps listed below if administrative consequences are necessary. (One or more of the violations may be applied) 1. Verbal warning issued by a league, organization or school official. 2. Written warning issued by a league, organization or school official. 3. Suspension or immediate ejection from a youth sports event issued by a league, organization or school official who is authorized to issue such suspension or ejection by a school board or youth sports organization. 4. Suspension from multiple youth sports events issued by a league, organization or school official who is authorized to issue such suspension by a school board. 5. Season suspension or multiple season suspension issued by a school board. TEAM - Together Everyone Achieves More

Dear Sir or Madame, I am a member of the Lakeland High School Pompon team. Throughout the year our organization raises funds for the team to go to regional, state and high kick competitions. We also fundraise to cover the costs for uniforms, performance dance wear, competition fees, personal trainers, use of equipment at LHS and summer camp. The Pompon team is a self-funded sport, which is not supported by the State of Michigan. The state classifies the Pom team as a club and not a team sport. This puts the responsibilities of all the expenses on the student and their parents. The team and parents do many fundraisers to support the Pom team. Some ways we have raised funds have been selling food items, car washes, bottle drives, team sponsors and pom clinics. We are continuing to fundraise, but are always looking for new ways to earn money for our team. We are now giving you the opportunity to be a part of our team and community by becoming a sponsor for our team. At this time we are looking for a monetary donation, which will advertise your business. By donating a small amount to our team you can receive inexpensive local advertisement, support your community and help out the Lakeland Varsity Pom team. The attached team sponsor form breaks down the different levels of sponsorship for our Pom team. If you are able to donate, please complete the attached form and return to the respective representative. Please make your check payable to: LHS POMS. Thank you in advance for your support. Sincerely, Lakeland High School Varsity Pom Team Tax I.D. # Representative s Name: Phone #
