1 The Students Union at UWE Sports Conference MINUTES Thursday 29th October 2015 Room 1L01 Frenchay 5.30pm Present: American Football, Archery, Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Boat, Canoe, Cheerleading, Climbing, Cricket, Cycling, Dance, Fencing, Football Men, Football Women, Gliding, Golf, Hockey, Jiu-Jitsu, Kickboxing & Muay Thai, Lacrosse, Netball, Pool & Snooker, Riding, Rugby Union Men, Rugby Union Women, Sailing, Skydive, Snowsports, Squash, Sub Aqua, Swimming & Waterpolo, Tae Kwon Do, Tennis, Trampoline, Ultimate Frisbee, Volleyball and Windsurf & Kite (39) In attendance: Vice President Sports & Health and Sports Co-ordinator Absent: Polo & Rugby League (2) Apologies for absence: Adam Brittain - VP Sports & Health chaired the meeting 001/1516 Minutes of the Previous Meeting (Sports Committee - 19th March 2015) No points of action required attention 002/1516 Matters arising and actions from minutes No matters arising and minutes adopted as true record 003/1516 Welcome from VP Sports & Health Written report submitted and circulated prior to the meeting. Items contained therein were presented. 004/1516 Breakout Activity: Reflection on Fresher s 2015 Conference was invited to reflect on the Freshers events and feedback on both the strong points and area for development to help shape future events. 005/1516 Club Ratifications None 006/1516 BUCS Funding Page 1 of 7

2 Colin Stevens, Sports Co-ordinator, outlined the process in respect of applications for financial support when considering a clubs participation in Individual BUCS Championships. 007/1516 BUCS Administration Colin Stevens, reminded those clubs with teams competing in BUCS of their administrative responsibilities with specific relation to Team Sheets, advising results and ensuring were provided in a timely and accurate manner. 008/1516 Minimum Membership Requirements With the deadline for clubs to ensure they have the minimum number of 25 paid members falling today clubs were provided with figures as to the current state of the sporting nation. VP Sports would be talking to clubs who required support. 009/1516 Initiations All clubs were reminded of the need to apply to the SU and provide a comprehensive plan if an initiation was planned. As in previous years these are to take place in a defined period (26 th October to 16 th November 2015) 010/1516 Mid-Year Reviews The SU will once more be conducting mid-year reviews by way of an on-line survey. Clubs were encouraged to ensure they take the opportunity to feedback on any issues they have faced and of course advice any key positive developments in the first term. The percentage return in the last academic year was very low so a prize draw will be made in which all those clubs who complete the survey would have a chance of winning. 011/1516 Kit A number of kit orders for clubs have now been made. Clubs were asked to feedback on issues they might experience. 012/1516 Centre for Sport Update Catherine Ogilivie, addressed Conference on behalf of Alex Isaac, Head of Sport and provided information on the following key areas of development: With an increasing number of students residing on campus there is a need to create more sporting options The Lockleaze project which will provided 3 grass and 3 astro pitches. It is anticipated that 2 of the latter could be available by September Project looking at creating further indoor sporting space by way of an area alongside the existing Centre for Sport the size of 4 Tennis Courts. Funds are still available for students to pursue Coaching or Officials qualifications by way of the EDGE programme The Social Sport programme has seen a good level of participation Page 2 of 7

3 013/1516 Joint Committee for Sport The primary focus of this group currently is reviewing the Universities Sports Strategy. This will involve the creation of specific working groups to look at key areas such as participation and performance sport. 014/1516 Off The Wall VP Sports advised that this Sport England backed initiative was proving very successful with memberships now in excess of 370 and all activities full subscribed. 015/1516 Funding Opportunities Conference were invited to consider club requirements for the remainder of the academic year. 016/1516 Eleanor Rose Ellis Scholarship Conference were provided with details as to how individuals could apply for consideration for this new scholarship. The closing date for applications is the 12th November /1516 Feel Good February This year s FGF will kick off with a Feel Good Festival on 1 st February Clubs should advise VP Sports and Health if they would like to get involved. 018/1516 Varsity 2016 Varsity day will be Wednesday 9 th March Any current BUCS matches scheduled for that day will be re-arranged. 019/1516 Sports Tour Clubs are looking at tours in both Croatia and Salou Fest. Clubs were also advised that we have entered into a partnership agreement with Bournemouth 7 s. 020/1516 Presidential Residential Following on from the successful pilot last year we are planning to take this forward once more in Further detail to follow in term /1516 Sports Ball 2016 A provisional date for next year s Sports Ball and Awards has been for Wednesday 25 th May This to be held, once more, at Bristol Marriott, Castle Park. 023/1516 UWE Raising and Giving (RAG) Sam Anstell addressed conference and provided information on the RAG targets for the remainder of the academic year along with useful tips and advise as to how clubs can get involved. 024/1516 Sports Volunteering in the Community Sam Anstell addressed conference and provided information on the volunteering opportunities that exist along with useful tips and advise as to how clubs can get involved and encouraging club members to engage with the Bristol Futures Awards. 4 025/1516 Sports and Sustainability Laura-Kate Howell addressed conference and provided another thought provoking session as to how Sports Clubs can engage with the sustainability issues facing us. 026/1516 Sports Executive Elections VP Sports encouraged students to consider and express interest in taking on one of the revised Executive roles: Performance Officer Participation Officer Fundraising Officer More information about each role is available on-line. 027/1516 AOB (Any Other Business) None 028/1415 Date of Next Meeting: Thursday 21 st January 2016 Meeting finished pm Report from VP Sports & Health Agenda Item 031/1516 Happy New Year to all! I hope you had a fantastic time over the Christmas break and managed to survive January exams! Sports Strategy I have been working very closely with Alex Isaac who is the Head of Sport at UWE to develop the joint sport strategy. We have identified 5 key areas for development and are now working extremely hard to ensure that we can implement this strategy. If anyone would like any further information on this please do not hesitate to get in touch! Alongside this there has been significant work to deliver the Sports Facilities Strategy I am hoping that very soon I will be able to give you some more positive news regarding the way in which sporting facilities are moving forward at UWE. Varsity Varsity is a little over a month away! And all the dates have been confirmed. Very soon you will be able to view the brand new Varsity Series website. We will be getting in touch very soon to ensure that everyone who is participating in the series has paid their 5 Varsity Fee. Page 4 of 7

5 Eleanor Rose Ellis Scholarship The Eleanor Rose Ellis Scholarship was established and announced at the The Students Union at UWE Annual Sports Ball in I would like to take this chance to announce that Annette Cook has been awarded the first Eleanor Rose Scholarship for special contribution to sport at UWE. Annette is the vice president, 1st team captain, leading points scorer, a current national league player of UWE Basketball and volunteers as a table official for the club.
