Meet the EJHS COED Cheerleading Coaches! Kristen Mulcahy Thank you for your interest in the EJHS COED Cheerleading team. I am the Head Coach for the East Jessamine High School Cheerleading team. I have 14 years of cheerleading background, including 2 years as head coach at East Jessamine High School. I have also been involved with various Illinois Coed and All-Girl All-Star teams, my own Varsity High School squad, and the University of Kentucky Varsity squad. I have previously worked at Premier Athletics of Lexington, and have been teaching tumbling classes for over 4 years now. Through this experience, as well as working with the Special Needs Team at the gym, I have worked very closely with Debbie Love of Kentucky All-Stars, so I am very aware of the proper training and conditioning to move athletes towards higher skills. I am also currently a Head Instructor for the National Cheerleaders Association where I have been teaching camps for the last 7 years. This job has brought me many great experiences working with middle school, high school, and college athletes, as well as traveling opportunities to New York, for the Macy s Day Thanksgiving Day Parade, and Daytona, for NCA College Nationals. Kelsey Caruso I will be an assistant coach for the school year. I am a junior studying Chemical Engineering at the University of Kentucky. I grew up in Fort Wayne, Indiana and began doing gymnastics at age 3. I competed in gymnastics, up to level 7, until 6 th grade when I then began cheering for my Middle School and an All-Star squad, Total Cheer Academy, which I cheered at through High School. I then moved to Lexington, where I have cheered for three years now on the University of Kentucky s cheerleading squad. I am extremely thankful for all the great coaches that have helped me achieve so much in cheerleading, and hope I can help you all reach your goals as well. I believe there is great potential for this team and I have high expectations as to the level this squad can reach. Let s make it an awesome year! Matej Kavcnik I will be an assistant coach for the EJHS Cheerleading Team this year. I worked with the team last season to improve the team s tumbling and coed stunting skills. I was born in Slovenia where I started my cheerleading career 16 years ago. From then, I went on to win multiple European championships, and placed 3rd place three years in a row at the ICU World Championships in partner stunting. In 2011, I joined and am still part of the University of Kentucky Varsity cheerleading team. I was a part of the blue squad that won UCA nationals in 2012 and got 2nd in I have been coaching cheerleading for almost 10 years now and have worked as a cheer instructor all over Europe and the USA. For the Future! We are all very excited to move on to a new year with the cheerleaders of East Jessamine High School and hope you are as well! Coming off of a winning season where the EJHS Cheerleading team won their first Regional Title which qualified them for the KHSAA State competition, we are convinced that this will be the year which we create new goals to keep the team moving forward. With a year of coed cheerleading under us, we hope this year brings in more boys to our competition team to create an unbeatable team! As current or former University of Kentucky Cheerleaders, we have the knowledge and ability to help this team grow to their highest potential by training and conditioning each member in the correct ways to improve his/her skills, and cannot wait to put these skills into action. Our expectations for this team will be high; you will need to be dedicated and hard working to be successful on this squad. With these expectations and rules following, I guarantee you will you see an improvement within yourself (or your son/daughter) as an athlete, as well as the team as a whole. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns at any time before or after tryouts.

About Tryouts All current 7 th -11 th grade EJMS or EJHS girls or boys are invited to try-out for the EJHS Coed Cheerleading team. Current 8 th -11 th grade girls and boys will be looked at first to fill the cheerleading team, but a current 7 th grader may be asked to join the high school team as well. In this and any case, athletes may not be involved with another Jessamine County School Cheerleading Team throughout the year. This does not include all-star and competitive teams, although it needs to be known that the EJHS Cheerleading team should be their #1 priority. Included in this packet are 3 teacher recommendation forms to be filled out by 3 different former or current teachers in your building. When asking a teacher to complete this form, remember to ask them politely, bring them an envelope to place the completed form in, and give them an adequate amount of time to fill out. The completed forms will be placed in an envelope with the seal signed by the teacher. The teacher may not share the information with you. You will need to have these three envelopes ready to be turned in on the FIRST day of clinics. Each recommendation will be a part of your tryout score. Participants will be learning a sideline chant, performance cheer, and fight song which they will perform along with 3 jumps and tumbling (1 running, 1 standing), in groups of 3, on Friday, April 19 at The Providence Athletic Center. Coaches will be present at all tryout clinics and will be judging/taking notes throughout the clinic days; therefore participants are expected to catch on quickly, as well as practice on their own outside of tryouts. The teachers will not be present after the first day s tryout clinic; therefore athletes should ask questions and perfect the material that day. Material will be reviewed both days of clinic as well as before the day of tryouts. Attendance will be taken each day. All clinics are mandatory unless prior discussed with the head coach. Monday, April 15: Participants will be given a number. Participant s number will start with the grade they will be entering the following fall. The first day of tryouts will consist of learning the sideline chant, performance cheer, and fight song. Turn in 3 recommendation envelopes from teachers. Wednesday, April 17: The second day of clinics will involve reviewing material, jumps, tumbling, and stunts. (Participants should come ready to REVIEW material and not to relearn any parts) Coaches will be observing participants current and potential stunting skills at this time. Tumbling will be noted on this day for potential as well as the day of tryouts. Participants will be given a time for their tryout. Friday, April 19: Quick Review and tumbling warm up. Tryout at time and group given. Team and alternate list posted. One running and standing pass will be expected of all athletes. Participants are encouraged to try skills without a spot as long as their safety is not put in jeopardy. Participants are expected to keep a positive attitude throughout the entirety of the tryout which should also follow into the season if they are chosen for the team. Parents will not be aloud in the gym at any time of clinics or tryouts unless an emergency arises. Number of teams and sizes of team(s) will be decided by the Head Coach at the time of tryouts. There may also be alternates chosen at this time depending on the number of participants. Participants will be notified of their placement on the team the day of tryouts. A sign will be posted with the girl/boy s numbers which have made the squad or alternate list. Alternates will be contacted by the coach within a week, letting them know the expected skills by the end of the summer. If the skills goals are not met by the first football game, the coaches may choose to remove the athlete from the team/alternate list at this time. Alternates have the same expectations of those who are placed on the team. Those who do not make the team at this time shall not ask questions at the time of posting as well as any time before a week after the tryout date. Please do not or call Kristen before a week after the tryout date (all calls and s will be unanswered until this time). All final decisions are made by the head coach and are FINAL.

Rules and Expectations It is expected that you and your parents read through this packet in its entirety in order to fully understand what is expected of you as an athlete throughout the year. Practices (Monday 6:30-8:30, Wednesday 4:30-6:30) ALL practices are mandatory for ALL members of the team. Any problems or prior priorities will need to be discussed with the coach. If an athlete has to miss a practice for ANY reason, she must let the coach know beforehand. (That day or ten minutes before practice is not acceptable) Practices will be scheduled based on coach and athletes availability, as well as gym time provided. Monthly practice and game schedules will be given out to each cheerleader, therefore the athlete is responsible for ensuring their presence at every practice. Being in attendance for practice also means you are ready for practice. This means you have the proper cheerleading shoe which will be administrated to each athlete. Girls/boys should wear comfortable shorts/pants which they will be able to perform all necessary actions. Girls/boys should wear an appropriate T-shirt (girls: as well as a sports bra). Hair should be pulled back into a ponytail unless the hair is above shoulder length. NO JEWELRY OF ANY TYPE WILL BE ALLOWED AT PRACTICES. It is required you have a doctor s note to excuse any sickness or injury. Games All members of the cheerleading team(s) will be required to be in attendance to ALL games which are required by Coach and Athletic Director. This includes all scheduled Varsity Football and Boy s and Girl s home Basketball games. (As well as some away region 12 basketball and any regional/district tournament games which will be tba) Athletes will come with proper attire (CLEAN uniform, bow, hair pulled back, shoes, natural make-up). NO JEWELRY OF ANY TYPE AND NO NAIL POLISH at games please. Girls/boys will be expected to learn and know all sideline cheers/dances/fight song, as well as that week s performance cheer. The coach may ask an athlete to sit out until this material is mastered. If an athlete is sick or injured they need to be present at the game and sitting with the team (not with other friends). It is required you have a doctor s note to excuse any sickness or injury. Any boys a part of the football team will be excused from cheering the football games. Captain(s) Captain(s) will be decided by the coaches only. Seniors are expected to step up and lead the team but are not obligated to take or should expect a captain position. Captains are chosen based on leadership/sportsmanship qualities, overall personal characteristics, school involvement, and dedication to the team and its members. Captains are in charge of bringing poms, signs, athletic bag, and megaphones to all practices and games. They will be responsible for contacting the athletes on schedule changes. They will be in charge of deciding what the team will wear to school on gameday. This person will need to be in contact with the school athletic director and cheerleading coaches weekly at minimum. Captains will put together pep rallies as well as schedule banner making and decoration times for the team. If the coaches feel there is no athlete who can fill the captain spot, there will not be a captain for the year and seniors will be expected to fill the position. A captain may be dismissed/replaced at any time if a coach does not feel they are meeting their duties and responsibilities. Tumbling All members of the cheerleading team(s) will be required to attend a weekly tumbling class. This class will be instructed at the choice of the head coach and will be held at The Providence Athletic Center unless otherwise discussed. The cost of this 1-2 hour class will be $10/week or $40/month. If an athlete is unable to attend, other arrangements for tumbling MUST be arranged with coach s consent. This may change from tumbling to stunting/routine instruction come time to competition. Members of the squad will also be required to take an outside tumbling class or private class once per week. Names and numbers of gyms/class will need to be given to the coach ASAP starting the first day of summer. (This means you should be tumbling AT LEAST once a week during the summer months) Coaches will be checking in to be sure attendance is behind upheld at their classes. All tumbling which is thrown at tryouts/practices will be expected to be maintained through the summer and school year. A weekly tumbling check may be put into place. If an athlete does not meet their tumbling requirement/goal that week, they may be asked to sit out for that week s game. It is expected that all girls of the cheerleading team will have a minimum of a back-handspring by the first football game.

Competition We will attend 3 competitions outside of regionals and state. All members of the cheerleading team(s) will be required to attend any competitions which the coach/team plans. Competition schedule will be discussed by the coach, team members, parents, and administration. The number of competitions which the team will participate will be at the coach/administration s final discretion. Second tryouts for the competition team may be put in place at the coach s discretion and will be chosen based on talent and readiness, not number of years on the team. The final competition team and alternates may be changed at any time by the coach based on specific needs for the team/routine. Alternates will be expected to attend all practices and maintain/improve their skills during these practices. Alternates are expected to know multiple parts of the routine so they are able to jump in if needed last minute. Fundraising All members of the cheerleading team(s) will be required to fundraise to help raise money for the team s expenses. Uniforms All members of the cheerleading team(s) will be given 1-2 uniforms to rent. This uniform will include a shell and a skirt. The uniform is to be kept clean at all times. Body suits, briefs, socks, bows, shoes, warm-up jacket, and warmup pants will have to be individually bought. (These items will be chosen by the coach and are mandatory to have) Each member will be expected to return the same uniform in decent condition at the end of the cheerleading season. Failure to do so will result in owed money to the EJHS cheerleading team. Camp All members of the cheerleading team(s) will be required to be in attendance at any and all skill/choreography camps. Summer camp type, dates, uniform will be discussed by Athletic Director, Coach, and Team Members. Final camp type and dates will be set by the Head Coach. Approximate Prices Blue boy cut briefs: $5.95 Green sparkly boy cut briefs: $ Blue body suit: $12.95 White body suit: $12.95 Shoes: $59.99 Warm up jacket: $ Warm up pants: $59.00 Bow: $10.00 Camp T shirts: $20.00 Jersey: $30.00 Rain jacket: $7.95 Please get your own black and blue soffe shorts Camp Fees: $100-$250 (depending on chosen type and location) Choreography Fee: $50-$100 (based on choreographer) Competition Fees: Will be based on the amount of fundraising we do as a team Tumbling: $10/week as well as outside tumbling classes one time per week (can be paid up front) ***All prices are approximate and ay change based on company of purchase and/or tax/shipping Grades All athletes are expected by the school to keep up their grade point average. Any 2 failing grades (at any time within the semester) will cause an athlete to sit out at games/practices during that week or until grades are brought out of failing boundaries. The athletic director will let the coach know WEEKLY who is ineligible for the following week. If any athlete is ineligible any 4 times throughout the season, they will be removed from the team. As a squad, every member of the team is important for every game/practice, thus ineligibility for more than any three weeks will cause the team difficulties; therefore will not be dealt with past this restriction. As cheerleaders of your school, you represent the student body of EJHS. You need to take pride in yourself and your teammates and keep your academics at a high level and priority. You will also be expected to stay out of ISS and maintain a leadership role at your school. Failure to do so can jeopardize your place on the team.

Workouts Athletes will be required to condition and stretch in and outside of practice. Members of the team will be expected to have the endurance, strength, and conditioning in order to be a successful part of the EJHS cheerleading squad. Members will be expected to not only keep their current skills but also improve upon those skills which were seen at tryouts or any time of the year. All members are expected to stretch everyday on their own time. This is important for jumps and flyer flexibility. Flyers are expected to have a heel stretch, arabesque, scale, and scorpion. All-star/competition/other cheerleading teams Although it is not preferred, athletes on the EJHS cheerleading team may participate in an outside all-star or competitive cheerleading team as long as it does not interrupt EJHS practice, games, and competitions. If an athlete is a part of an outside organization, they will need to let the coach know. They will also need to provide their outside practice times and competition schedule with the head coach asap. EJHS cheer members will not be allowed to compete with the EJMS cheerleading squad. EJHS cheerleaders are expected to make the EJHS cheerleading team their #1 priority outside of school and family. Exceptions may be made for boys a part of the EJHS football team. Quitting or removal of the squad The coach may remove an athlete from the team at any time if they feel the athlete has not met the expectations/goals of the team, portrayed poor sportsmanship, repeatedly reported poor grades or spent time in ISS. If an athlete quits without suitable reasoning, or is removed from the squad by a coach, the chances of the athlete making the squad the next year are VERY LOW. Statement of Philosophy for Athletics A comprehensive and balanced athletic program is an essential complement to the basic program of instruction. The athletic program should provide opportunities for students to further develop interests and talents in athletic activities. Participation in these activities should provide many students with a lifetime basis for personal values, for work and leisure activities. The athletic program should be available to all students who demonstrate an interest in participating, regardless of their individual abilities. Accordingly, appropriate skill levels should be established within activities, when feasible, so that students may participate as fully as possible regardless of ability levels. Every effort should be made to support the athletic programs with the best facilities, equipment and with the most qualified staff available. Insofar as possible, knowledge and skills gained in the classroom should be applied and further developed in the athletic program. Coaches, directors, and sponsors should also teach the specific skills necessary for improvement in athletics and provide guidance in the development of self-realization, good sportsmanship, cooperation, leadership, ethical behavior, and an appreciation for the importance of practice. Governing Bodies East Jessamine High School is a member of the Kentucky High School Athletic Association. We are bound by the bylaws and regulations set forth by the KHSAA. You may access the regulations and bylaws of the KHSAA on their website East Jessamine High School is under the jurisdiction of the Jessamine County Board of Education and will abide with all regulations set forth by the Jessamine County Board of Education. Athletics at East Jessamine High School are subject to the policies of the East Jessamine Site-Base Council and will abide with all policies set forth by them. The Gender-Equity Committee shall periodically review compliance with Title IX regulations. Special Notation of Regulations Academic Eligibility: For a student to be eligible to participate in athletics they must meet the criteria established by the KHSAA and also meet regulations placed by our school. KHSAA Regulations: The KHSAA regulations for academic eligibility are explained in detail by Bylaw 5 of the KHSAA Bylaws and can be accessed at To summarize Bylaw 5: A student-athlete must meet the following criteria to be eligible to participate in athletics: o Be at proper grade level The KHSAA requires that a student must be at grade level on the first day of school to be eligible for participation in athletics. At grade level is defined by the KHSAA depending upon the number of credits required for graduation. The requirements for an East Jessamine High School student to be considered at grade level by the KHSAA are shown below. Promotion from grade 8 is required to be eligible as a freshman. Make continual progress during the school year. o Continual progress is verified by the weekly grade check. o Students must be passing 4 of 5 classes on the grade check. A student who does not meet this requirement is ineligible for the entire week (Monday-Sunday) of the week following the grade check. Students not meeting this requirement on the final grade at the end of the school year are eligible to participate in summer practices and are eligible to participate at the beginning of the next school year if they are at proper grade level. ***Participation is defined as play or practice*** Additional EJHS Requirements: The high school student athlete who is not passing the same class for 2 consecutive grade checks will be ineligible for competition the following Monday-Sunday. For example, a student athlete could be failing a class for the 1st grade check and still be permitted to participate in the athletic contests for the following week as long as they meet the minimum KHSAA requirement. If the student athlete is failing the same class on the next grade check he/she would be ineligible.

Any high school student athlete who drops below a C grade in any class will be required to attend the before school study hall the following week or until the grade is raised to at least a C average.
