Dear JDP Families, On behalf of the entire JDP faculty and our family, we would like welcome all returning and new families to our twelfth season of Celebrating the Arts Together! We have many exciting events and productions planned at JDP this season, and we hope that the Parent & Student Handbook will help guide you throughout the 2014/15 year ahead. We ask that you please review everything in this handbook with your family as it is very important to have a complete and thorough understanding as to what is expected and planned for the upcoming season. Please be sure to keep your own copy of the handbook in an important place as we will be referring back to it periodically this year. If, at any time, you have questions or comments regarding our policies and expectations please feel free to contact any of the directors. We would also like to say Thank You once again for your continued support over the past eleven years, and we are excited to welcome your family as a part of our family this season! The most important part of all Dance and Musical Theatre training at JDP is to have fun, work hard and be joyful. The entire JDP faculty looks forward to sharing our Love of the Arts with You. Warm regards, Kristen and Troy Jansen

Studio Etiquette for all Students Training in the Performing Arts is a privilege; students, and parents, must understand the expectations needed to demonstrate the esteem for the art form. All students, parents, guests and staff are expected to be courteous and treat one another with dignity and respect. We have a no politics policy. Attendance Policy: Attendance is taken each week in each class. It is imperative that students are consistently in class and rehearsals in order to learn and progress. For dancers; any student missing ballet technique class will not be permitted to wear her pointe shoes until the instructor feels she is ready. This rule is not a punishment, but in place to protect our dancers from injury. Likewise, dancers missing any classes or rehearsals prior to a production will not be permitted to perform. For musical theatre students; any student consistently missing classes or rehearsals may have their role given to another student. This is out of fairness to other cast members who have committed their time and energy to the production. Be on Time: Students need to be on time for each and every class. Warm up at the beginning of each class prepares the body and voice to assist in preventing injury. If a student arrives late, he or she should come quietly into class and await permission from the instructor to join class. If dancers are more than 15 minutes late, they may be asked to observe and take notes. Be Neat: All students are expected to comply with the applicable hair and dress code. (See page 6) For dancers, you must have the proper shoes at all times. Dead pointe shoes or overused shoes are very soft and dangerous to the dancer. The dress code allows the instructors to see your physical movement and alignment so you may receive proper corrections. No shorts or extra clothes will be permitted to be worn in class. No dance shoes should be worn outside as they will ruin very quickly. For actors, proper footwear and attire ensures you and your classmates are able to focus on your character and technique and ensure that rehearsal is not distracted by wardrobe and hygiene issues. Any dance or musical theatre student not wearing the proper footwear or attire may not be permitted to participate in class or rehearsal. ALL students must wear cover ups when coming to and from class! No exceptions, this is for the student s safety and protection! Our Manners: Dancers and Actors are polite ladies and gentlemen. Please respect our training facility, staff and fellow performers. Please do not talk in class, lean against the wall, barre or piano. Do not sit down or cross your arms unless directed to do so. Talking or texting on your cell phone, chewing gum or eating in the studio is never permitted. Openly yawning is very rude and very disrespectful, if you absolutely must yawn please do so discreetly. Water is permitted only during water breaks. Any type of rudeness or disrespect to teachers, peers, accompanists, and staff is unacceptable and will not be tolerated. Students will be dismissed from class and expulsion may be warranted if severe. Always ask for permission to leave class if needed. Students should always use the restroom before class or rehearsal begins. Always try your best so you may become your best. Cell phone policy: Cell phones are to be turned off when in class and left outside of class in the provided cubbies for bags. No exceptions. During water breaks, students are not permitted to use their cell phones to text family or friends, your focus should always be on class or rehearsal. The studio phone number is if needed for emergencies. Make-up Policy: Accounts will continually be charged for classes missed due to illness or vacations.. All missed classes are to be made up in the same level class or a level lower. Please ask if you are unsure as to which to attend. Classes for the regular season must be made up by May 30 th, Hurricane or Inclement Weather: We follow the Hillsborough County School District for any school closings for hurricanes or inclement weather. Please call the studio or visit our Facebook page for any updates during inclement weather. If the studio has to close, please follow the make-up policy above for missed classes.
Theatre Etiquette for all Students All dancers and actors will act in a professional manner, as a positive representation of the studio and will respect the theatre and theatre staff at all times. It is required that EVERY student attends their production week rehearsals. If students are not at these rehearsals their role(s) will be given to another performer, no exceptions. Performing onstage is very different than rehearsing in a studio. For their safety all dancers, actors and performers, (including professionals), must always be aware of their surroundings and that includes each other, the wings, the lights, the curtains, the crew, etc yet still have the ability to listen to their music, remember their steps and/or their lines all while having hundreds of people watch them with bright lights glaring in their faces. Being onstage is magical, but it is very nerve wracking especially if it's the first time you've ever performed or are doing any new work! Tech and dress rehearsals can help calm those nerves so that each performer can have FUN and SHINE come performance time. No running, yelling or monkey business in the theatre. All performers are to remain quiet and watchful during all tech and dress rehearsals and take note of all corrections and directions given to other performers. Cell phones or any other electronic devices are not permitted in the audience, backstage or in the dressing rooms. If you absolutely must bring your cell phone it must be OFF and SILENT at ALL times. The first thing all performers should do upon arrival of the theatre is check all of their own costumes and props to make sure they are located where they need to be for use in the rehearsal or performance and/or for quick changes. Performers should NEVER touch or move any costume or prop that does not belong to them. Performers are never to wander about the theatre or studio spaces alone or go into other theatre or studio spaces located in the building unless they have been given permission from a director. All performers are to clean up after themselves after every rehearsal and performance. This includes all of their personal belongings, costumes and props. The dressing rooms, studios and backstage area must be left spotless. You may not leave until you have been excused by a director. Advanced students may be asked to stay to help strike all sets and scenery. ALL students must wear cover ups when coming to and from the theatre! No exceptions, this is for your safety and protection!
Performance Hair, Makeup and Notes for all Dancers: All female dancers in Primary Levels I-IV, and Levels IA, IIA, B, C and D must arrive to all of the production dress rehearsals and performances with: Hair slicked back into a neat bun with invisible hair net. NO bangs, wispies, frizzies or visible hair clips, scrunchies, headbands, etc. (The best way to ensure a secure and slicked back bun is by putting your child s hair up while it is wet and of course using lots of hairspray and gel) Makeup fully applied: Foundation that is the same color as their skin or one shade darker, neutral colored eye shadow (brown is ideal), mascara, pink blush, pink or red lipstick (not too bright; a daytime color, please) Black or brown eyeliner is optional. Tights and nude leotard ON underneath easy to remove street clothes (so clothes do not mess up hair or makeup when removing) No holes, stains, runs or rips in the tights. Dance bag with ALL applicable dance shoes, extra tights, a waterbottle, hairspray and extra bobby pins. DO NOT BRING TO THE THEATRE: Food or Electronic Devices i.e.: cell phones, ipods, ipads, tablets, Gameboys, DS, Xbox, Nintendo etc, jewelry or anything of value that may get lost. NO fingernail polish, earrings, rings, bracelets, necklaces, anklets or ANY jewelry may be worn onstage or brought to the theatre! Please take off and leave at home. PLEASE be sure to have your child s name written on EVERYTHING worn or brought to the theatre including dance bags and everything in it. All male dancers in Primary Levels I-IV, and Levels IA, IIA, B, C and D must arrive at all of the production dress rehearsals and performances with: Neat and tidy hair, hair may be slicked back and gelled Neutral colored blush and lipstick applied, all other makeup is optional. White tight fitting tank and black tights or tight fitting black shorts ON underneath street clothes Ballet bag with ALL applicable dance shoes and a waterbottle DO NOT BRING TO THE THEATRE: food, electronic devices i.e.: cell phones, ipods, ipads, tablets, Gameboys, DS, Xbox, Nintendo etc, jewelry or anything of value that may get lost. ALL students must wear cover ups when coming to and from JDP and the theatre! No exceptions, this is for your child s safety and protection!
Theatre Notes for Parents/Guardians: All students will receive ticket vouchers per production that they are encouraged to sell to family, friends and community members. These vouchers will be slightly discounted from the face value of each ticket. For every 10 vouchers sold, (per production), students will receive 2 complimentary tickets. It is required that EVERY student attends their production week rehearsals. If students are not at these rehearsals their role(s) will be given to another performer. When dropping off your child(ren) for all USF shows and rehearsals please bring them to the back loading dock behind USF Theatre I. You may take them inside to the dressing rooms via the stage door on the left and by going straight down the stairs to your right. (PLEASE only one parent or guardian per child is permitted) When dropping off your child(ren) for all JDP shows and rehearsals you may bring them inside or send them inside on their own. Only one parent or guardian is permitted in the studio dressing rooms. Please DO NOT go backstage, or access the house or lobby via the stage door at USF!! After dropping your child inside the dressing rooms you MUST go back out the door you came in and walk around the theatre to the front lobby doors. This is for the safety of all performers, children and staff, THANK YOU for your cooperation with this. There will be JDP/CSAG staff and volunteers to guide your child to their correct dressing room as well as helping them with all costume changes and keeping them entertained. If you are interested in volunteering for any of our productions please info@jansendance.com and we will put you on our volunteer contact list. Children may not be picked up until the conclusion of the show or the conclusion of their rehearsal and they have been dismissed by one of the directors. You will pick them up exactly where you dropped them off. Again only ONE parent or guardian is permitted in the dressing rooms per child. Please be sure they have not forgotten any of their belongings. All production costumes are the property of Collective Soles Arts Group therefore children must leave their costumes at the theatre in an orderly fashion. (For the Spring Dance Concert; students are allowed and must take those costumes home with them at the conclusion of that production) Please no flash photography during any rehearsal or performance. You are always welcome to take photos during rehearsals but because of safety reasons the flash must be off. Sudden flashes of bright lights can cause injury to performers. In addition you are welcome to record all dress rehearsals, but no video recording during performances. The most important part of all performances is to make it as fun and joyful as possible! We at JDP/CSAG are thrilled to have you and your child(ren) with us this season and we cannot wait to see the students shine onstage!
