Despite that the years have gone by so quickly, I am proud to say that I was a part of our award-winning cheerleading squad. Cheer allowed me to reflect my school spirit and the pride I take in being a tigerette. Being on this team broke me out of my shell and I am now much more confident! Performing for our peers and friends, gives us a sense of accomplishment when we see the smiles on the crowds faces as we stick an energetic routine. I have gained the value of determination from my team because we work hard, stay positive and get things done. There is no such thing as I can t on our team because we believe we can achieve our goals as long as we strive to accomplish them. The commitment on this team has allowed me to create strong bonds with my teammates and build friendships. We learn how to trust our teammates and how to rely on them in order to move forward when we come across a struggle. Cheer is such a great sport because it gives you the leadership skills that you can carry throughout life. Whatever happens outside of practice is set aside once we re on the mat we become one and leave our hearts on the stage! Sadly to say, this year is coming to an end but I hope that girls and boys who try-out for next years squad have as much fun as we did these years. Good luck tigers! 2 VOLUME 2, ISSUE 5 Page 2 Be prepared. Get a good night's sleep the day before your exam. Eat a well-balanced meal prior to your exam, one that contains plenty of proteins and carbohydrates. Dress comfortably. Arrive early. Allow yourself at least minutes to find your room and get settled. Then you can relax before the exam, so you won't feel rushed. Think success. Keep your thoughts positive. Turn negative thoughts into positive ones. Tell yourself you will do well on the exam. Practice relaxation techniques. Some students become overly worried about exams. Before or during the test, they may perspire heavily, experience an upset stomach, or have shortness of breath. If you feel any of these symptoms, talk to a close friend or see a counselor. They will suggest ways to deal with test anxiety. Here are some quick ways to relieve test anxiety: - Imagine yourself in your most favorite place. Let yourself sit there and relax. - Do a body scan. Tense and relax each part of your body starting with your toes and ending with your forehead. - Use the method of relaxation when you feel stress. Inhale slowly for 3 seconds. Hold your breath for 12 seconds, and then exhale slowly for 6 seconds Use these relaxation techniques throughout the test to conserve your energy for your best thinking. Read directions carefully. If you don't understand them, ask the proctor for further explanation before the exam starts. Use your best approach for answering the questions. Some testtakers like to skim the questions and answers before reading the problem or passage. Others prefer to work the problem or read the passage before looking at the answer choices. Decide which approach works best for you. Answer each question on the exam. Unless you are instructed not to, make sure you answer every question. If you are not sure of an answer, take an educated guess. Eliminate choices that are definitely wrong, and then choose from the remaining answers. Avoid focusing on any one question for too long AND work on the easiest questions first. Read all of the possible answers. Use your answer sheet correctly. Make sure the number on your question matches the number on your answer sheet. In this way, you will record your answers correctly. If you need to change your answer, erase it completely. Smudges or stray marks may affect the grading CAHSEE Tips of your exams, particularly if they are scored by a computer. If your answers are on a computerized grading sheet, make sure the answers are dark. The computerized scanner will skip over answers that are too light. Use good strategies for answering multiple choice and other objective questions. Look for the central idea of each question. What is the main point? Statements that begin with always, never, none, except, most, or least-are probably NOT the answer. Underline these or other key words if you are allowed to write on the test paper. Try to supply your own answer before choosing an alternative listed on the test. Mark an answer for every question. If you have to guess: The length of choices can be a clue. Choose the longest. If two choices are similar, choose neither. If two choices are opposites, choose one of them. The most general alternative is usually the right answer. Check your answers. Review your exam to make sure you have chosen the best responses. Change answers only if you are sure they are wrong.

7 Page 7 MAGNET NEWSLETTER Chinese Acrobats By: Sherry J. & Ignacio P. Chinese Acrobat Performing with a Pot! Performing with plates! Have you seen people throwing pots in mid air? On February 14, a group of young acrobats came to Lincoln High School to perform an act dealing with pots, umbrellas, yoyos, and flexibility. A young man from the group threw gigantic pots up in the air and caught it with his body. He did not drop it even once. Even when everyone thought it was going to drop, it never did. It got the audience excited to the point where they couldn t sit on their seats. A girl from the group lay on her back and threw umbrellas with her Later on this one performer impressed me even more when he started throwing a huge pot into the air, which in my point of view seem like he was about to drop it. The yo-yo performance made me go whoa! it was amazing how those girls were able to control them. The umbrella performance was pretty cool, I saw how the girl was able to control all the items she had, I even asked myself how can they do that? And my answer was: practice. The flexible girl amaze me too, it s really incredible how she was able to stretch herself and keep balance with items. This assembly was fun and full of mystery. -Ignacio feet. Twirling and spinning it around with just only her feet. It was awesome! The next performance they did was the big yo-yo. They threw the yo-yo in the air and caught it with just a piece of string to make it spin. People had their eyes wide open because the yoyo always looked like it was going to fall on the ground. A flexibility act came next, where a girl started stretching like crazy rolling all over the floor. As an audience she looked like she had no bones in her body! To make things even more amazing, she was balancing plates on a stick WHILE she rolled all over the floor. Sherry It was Valentine s Day and the day was going well so far. Then third period came and I got to class and the teacher announced that we were going to an assembly, and my reaction was just normal, but I was happy because I haven t gone to an assembly for a long time. The assembly was about acrobats that had pretty cool stuff and I was like this is going to be fun. Ten or so minutes went by and the show began. This show contain different kinds of performances that impressed me and the people that were in the auditorium. YUCA DANCE TEAM EXPERIENCE On the 24 th of February, the YUCA Dance Team performed for the Chinese New Year Assembly in the auditorium at Abraham Lincoln High School. I will tell you the experience I had performing and what it is like being on the team. Before the dance team is ready to perform, we have practice almost every week on Sunday from 10am to 12:30pm for Traditional and 12:30pm to 3pm for Modern. Traditional dance is a form of an old tradition dance. Modern dance is a form of dance in this time period but I m sure everyone knew that. Everyone puts time and energy into learning the choreograph before our first performance date comes. The practice would start on the month of August. The first year I performed in Abraham Lincoln High School was when I was a freshman. I was really nervous, but as there are more performances, my nervousness turned into excitement. I like to see the audiences face of enjoyment when they see us perform. Listening to the cheering gives me more confidence and energy to give them a good show to watch. It is already my 3 rd year in the YUCA Dance Team and I am quite sad that next year is my last year to be part of something I have committed my time and energy on. Van Chienh
