1 THE ACS TIMES THE ACS TIMES IS THE STUDENT-GENERATED NEWSPAPER OF ALTON CENTRAL SCHOOL SEPTEMBER EDITION 2017 ACS WELCOMES OUR NEW PRINCIPAL! By Gilbert Acosta I was invited to interview our new principal, Mr. MacArthur, on Friday, September 15. Here's what I learned about him. He applied to be our principal because he wanted to work with both elementary and middle school students and teachers. He used to be a middle school principal. He was also a band and music teacher before became principal. he a Mr. MacArthur hopes to help the students, teachers, and the community to improve ACS. Mr. MacArthur has no typical day Looking for a pencil, eraser, here in ACS, as every day is new and different. His priority is having himself available to students, parents, teachers, and the community. or sharpener? Well then, come on down to the School Store, open every Tuesday before school! We have great back to school gifts too!! Come on down on Tuesday! Mr. MacArthur has a wife, an 8-year-old son, 2 Siamese cats named Coco and Sebastian, and a beta fish named Rex. His favorite activities are: spending time with his family, traveling, and music. making When I asked Mr. MacArthur if there was anything else he wanted to share, he said that he is happy to be here and he hopes to have a good year. By Olivia Ouhrabka Guess what's happening in the ERC Wing? The boys' and girls' bathrooms have been remodeled! For years they have stayed the same, old bathrooms. And in the girls' room, one of the handles for the sink was broken so to turn it on, you had to turn it backwards. But thankfully, the school has decided to fix them up! For the remodel, it's almost the same as the bathrooms by the gymnasium, but upgraded. For example, in the bathrooms by the gymnasium, to dry your hands, there are paper towels. But in the bathrooms near the ERC, there are blowing hand-dryers. However, there's only one. Plus, they are motionactivated. This way, you don t Our new sinks! have to press any buttons. Other things that are motion-activated are the toilets, soap, and water. So now, with the new toilets, you don't have to touch them! And the only issue with the new sinks is that you can't control the temperature. Besides the hand-dryers, sinks, and toilets, here are some other things about the remodel: The stalls are painted blue, the floor and walls are sort of a beige color, and there's a big long mirror above all of the sinks. So that's what the new bathrooms are like, so check them out! BACK-TO-SCHOOL REFLECTIONS By William Donovan My first day of back to school was fun - no homework, and nice teachers. But once we get into the year, we get harder homework each day. We still have nice teachers, and will have a lot more fun. The teachers will brighten your day. Mr. Brown is my homeroom teacher. He is funny, enthusiastic, and really nice. The same goes for all the teachers - Mrs. Quinn, Mr. Bickford, Ms. Seigle, Ms. Rush, and all of our Unified Arts teachers. As sixth graders, we have a lot of changes. We are not allowed to drink tea, coffee, or juice in the hallways. You can only have plain water. There are now elective classes. I hope to learn a lot about math, early history, and Language Arts.
3 WORLD EVENTS HURRICANE HARVEY By Paige Caruso Hurricane Harvey has devastated people's lives. I would like you to remember the lives that were lost during this sad time. It struck near Houston and Dallas. The Dallas hospital had to evacuate because of flooding. There was a high school that got hit, but they stayed strong. In fact, the football team had its field wrecked. Two-thirds of the scoreboard rested in a trash heap out by the parking lot and the goal posts were down. Most hurricanes are in the south. That s because the south is humid and has lots of water. When in adulthood, you should think about hazards before you move to the place you're going. REMEMBERING THE 9/11 ATTACKS By Josi-Lynn Wentworth The day that we know as 9-11 is remembered because of what happened on the 11 of September, At Alton Central School we took a moment of silence to think of that day at the same time that terrorists took some planes and killed over 3000 people 16 years ago. In New York City terrorists destroyed the two Twin Towers, and just outside of Washington D.C. is where they targeted the Pentagon. There was a third plane that crashed in Pennsylvania. Our principal started our school day on September 11, 2017 with an announcement about how we should remember to work together instead of letting terrorists tear us apart. EARTHQUAKE MADNESS IN MEXICO CITY By Lynda Snow A major earthquake of a 7.1 magnitude hit Mexico City on Thursday Night, September 8, 2017, causing massive devastation. Two hundred thirty people died in the earthquake, including twenty-one schoolchildren. It destroyed several of the historic Mexican buildings very badly. The power went out in Mexico City. It will be out for weeks, and possibly up to 3 months. Please help these people by sending them fruit, vegetables, protein, etc. through the Red Cross. We should also pay our respects to the people who died in the earthquake and think about their families. Many Texans know how bad the damage is, since they recently faced Hurricane Harvey together. Let s hope that Mexico City can recover quickly! This photo shows a building in mid-collapse. Courtesy of Google Image Search
4 SPORTS AND RECREATION BEST QB EVER! By Henry Brown and Meryk Libby Did you know that the Patriots get new players almost every year? They are considered one of the best football teams in NFL history. When they first started they were called The Boston Patriots in They changed their name to the New England Patriots in In 1979 Steve Grogan lead the AFC with 28 touchdown passes. In 2001, Drew Bledsoe got injured, and so the coach made Tom Brady the starting quarterback. Since Tom Brady became the starter, he has led his team to five Super Bowl victories. His most exciting Super Bowl win was last season when he led his team to a victory after being down 28-0 at the half. Tom Brady broke the record for Most passing yards in a Super Bowl, passing for 466 yards. He is the first quarterback with three fourth-quarter comebacks. We are hoping to have a fantastic season! 13 FUN THINGS TO DO WITH YOUR FAMILY IN NH By Analese Hersey Canobie Lake Park in Salem Hampton Beach State Park Whale's Tale Water Park in Lincoln Charmingfare Farm in Candia McAulifffe-Shepard Discovery Center in Concord Clark's Trading Post in North Woodstock Squam Lakes Natrual Science Center in Holderness Odiorne Point State Park in Rye Childrens Museum of New Hampshire in Dover The Friendly Farm in Dublin in Candia Candia Springs Adventure Park SEE Science Center in Manchester Polar Caves in Rumney OUR FEATURED ACS FALL SPORTS TEAMS By Eve Roberge Girls A Soccer Roster Shane Flood, Coach Abby Argue Olivia Casalle Alexis Eckhart Piper Flood Mackenzy Holden Magen Lachance Alana Linsky Charlize Locke Chloe Marcello Sydney McDonald Maddy Paul Mackenzie Renner Hayley Snell Brooke Stellon Thera Woods Girls B Soccer Roster Josh Ranaldi, Coach Amelia Arsenauault Ella Bernier Pearl Cobern Marin Croteau Jasmine Emerson Charlie Forsythe Mya Linsky Eve Roberge Christine Rowell Emily Siegler

6 15 TIPS FOR SKYRIM By Jason English When you first start Skyrim, you're going to want some tips. So here are 15 tips for Skyrim. 1. First of all, you should choose to go with Ralof because you still get to choose your own side - Imperials or Stormcloak. 2. If you take my advice you will meet Gerder. You should not attack her because she gives you everything. If you do attack her it will ruin the game and you will have to start over and you don t want that. 3. You will want to do the quests the jarls want you to do because then you get gold. 4. If you complete enough quests, you become the thane so you can buy a house. 5. You should use your skill points wisely. 6. Do not hoard everything. Use your potions and sell your loot. It takes up weight, and if you weigh too much you go slow. 7. Enchant and brew with caution. It's PERMENANT! 8. Try to open all books because they improve some of your skills. 9. Interrupt your enemies with the unrelenting force shout. 10. Listen to the people of Skyrim. They sometimes give you quests. 11. Keep a few cure disease potions with you. There are diseases that you don t want so these potions are good to have. 12. Keep your magical gear for dischanting. 13. Keep a pickaxe with you. There are many mining spots in Skyrim. 14. Use your companions to your advantage. 15. Invest in a horse. Its faster and it has more stamina. TO DINE OR NOT TO DINE? THAT IS THE QUESTION By JJ English Here are 3 reviews for restaurants that I have gone to, and my opinions about them. Applebee's: I have gone to Applebee's before when I lived in Colorado. My experience was not very good. They burned all of my chicken. My dad's mushrooms where so badly burned that they turned into chips. My dad and I suffered from food poisoning after going there. The service was slow. The prices were decent, but in my opinion, you should not go there. I rate them 1 star out of 5. La Corona: La Corona is one of best restaurants that I've gone to. They have great Mexican food there. They also have excellent waiters and good service. They have a huge menu with many options to choose from. The prices are pretty good too. I do recommend going there. I rate them 4 stars out of 5. Chili's: Chili's was amazing. They had fantastic food with a lot of variety. Their service was awesome. Friendly and quick waiters served us. They only took 15 minutes to make steak tips. I loved the food. It was great, so I recommend that you go there. I rate them 4 stars out of 5.
