BENNETT HIGH SCHOOL WRESTLING TEAM HANDBOOK
BENNETT WRESTLING SEASON COACHING GOALS The sport of wrestling has been a guiding influence in my life for over two decades. Not a day goes by that I am not reminded just how much wrestling has contributed and molded me into the man I am today. I truly believe it has made me a better man, and this is the sole reason for my holding the sport of wrestling in such high esteem. It is my personal goal as head coach of the Bennett Wrestling Team to make each and every wrestler who walks out on our mats to be the best that they can be. The desire for improvement is not limited to just the sport of wrestling, but includes all aspects of life. My goal is to develop these young men academically, morally, physically and mentally. It is my desire then to use wrestling and the lesson taught through this sport to mature these young men. Wrestling is a tough sport and through it a great deal of life s lessons are taught. Hard work, dedication, perseverance, humility and winning or losing with grace are but few examples of the lessons to be learned. It is under these goals or guidelines that the Bennett Wrestling Program, as well as the team handbook, is designed. We are always looking to move in one direction and that is forward. We as a coaching staff believe that this is the program to achieve that end. TEAM GOALS We as a coaching staff believe wrestling to be an intense, even tough sport. It is also our belief that nothing matures a wrestler faster than live competition. This program s emphasis lies in live competition and intense work. Live competition or mat time, followed by bouts of high intensity work, build the strong foundation needed to compete in this sport. The Bennett Wrestling program is intense, even hard. And these young men will work hard! But frankly, there is NO SUBSTITUTE FOR HARD WORK. It is the only way to accomplish one s goals.
Half effort does not produce half results; it produces no results. Hard work consistent hard work, is the only way we can guarantee progress in reaching our goals. This team embraces an aggressive style of wrestling. Our focus lies in constant action, high percentage moves, and wrestling on our feet. Eighty percent of high-level wrestling (State, College, International) is on your feet, focusing on take-downs. That is the reason for its incorporation into our style. We focus on high percentage moves, techniques that rarely fail. We won t be the flashiest team you see this year, but solid, consistent wrestling, focusing on the fundamentals is the best way to put winning seasons together. We believe wrestling is a sport of constant motion and that the winner tends to be the wrestler focusing on action and not reaction. We believe our wrestlers should be able to hold their highest peak ability for the entire length of the match. That is the reason for our training so hard. As we strive for perfection on the mat so should we strive for perfection in our everyday lives. As wrestlers representing Bennett High School, as well as your families, you are to be held to a higher standard. Bennett Wrestlers will now be considered A CUT ABOVE THE REST. You are to be the epitome of the student athlete and as such will act accordingly. You are expected to attend school, get good grades, work hard, practice hard, compete hard, stay out of trouble, and handle yourselves with class, tact and grace. You are to set the example that others will follow and they will follow, because you have INSPIRED them! That is the expectation of a Bennett Wrestler. John Faczak Cell phone (303) Rick Jacoby BHS (303)
TABLE OF CONTENTS WELCOME COACHING AND TEAM GOALS BEHAVIOR OF THE ATHLETE AND TEAM TEAM RULES
Behavior of the Individual Athlete and Team In order to move in the right direction, to achieve the goals set by this team and its coaching staff, we must continue to hold a higher standard. We must apply this standard to ourselves as athletes, parents and coaches. We have had great success in this area over the years, making big changes in the behavior and attitude of the athletes that participate on this team. We as a coaching staff believe that we must continue down this path, that the rules instituted are paramount to this team, and as such will continue those put in place from previous years. This means that the Bennett Tiger Wrestling Team will have a ZERO TOLERANCE POLICY towards any actions or behaviors deemed unacceptable to the coaching staff. This year s preseason behavior by our returning wrestlers have only spotlighted the fact that these rules and policies are of the utmost importance, as their behavior and academic standing have been less than acceptable. ZERO TOLERANCE WILL BE IN FULL EFFECT this season. 1.PLEASE UNDERSTAND THAT YOU ARE ALREADY ON YOUR LAST WARNING. BECAUSE OF INCIDENTS BOTH FROM CURRENT AND PREVIOUS YEARS YOU ARE NO LONGER ALLOWED ANY MORE MISTAKES. 2. Even ONE mistake this year will result in your loss of the privilege to participate on this team. 3. Any infraction of these rules can and will result in the expulsion from this team, these rules include but are not limited to: Grades Academic Dishonesty (cheating) Tardiness/Truancy/Ditching of Class Tardiness/Truancy/Ditching of Practice Language Fighting Vandalism Arson Lying Stealing Cheating Insubordination Un-Sportsman like conduct or behavior Any District Policies and All Team Rules
4. Ineligibility at any time WILL BE considered an infraction of the rules. It is inexcusable to be failing a class at this level. 5. It will be at the Coaches discretion for any financial liability and/or responsibility for all damages occurred to property and equipment. Student athletes will be issued the following gear: 1. Team Equipment Duffle Bag 2. Team Dual - Sublimated- Singlet 3. Black Tournament Singlet 4. Team Warmup Top 5. Team Warmup Bottom 6. Team Headgear* 7. Team Championship Singlet* *Student athletes are not required to use all of the equipment and or uniforms. Wrestlers may use their own headgear and equipment bags if they choose. Championship singlets are issued weekly and returned BY Monday at the beginning of practice. Prices are based on current prices of the companies the wrestling team uses. Replacement costs of a single item are significantly higher than the purchase of items in team bulk quantities. 6. COACHES RESERVE THE RIGHT TO SEARCH AND SEIZURE OF ALL ATHLETES AND PROPERTY THERE IS NO ASSUMPTION OF PRIVACY An athlete can and will be searched of any and all property on his being, in his property (bags, jackets, etc.) as well as his rooms AT ANY TIME. 8. Parents are expected to back this up on every way and will be held equally accountable for their son/daughter s actions. Should you be called at 3 a.m. to come pick up your son in Grand Junction because he misbehaved, you are expected to come and do so.
TEAM RULES 1. PRIVILEGE It is a privilege to be a part of the Bennett Wrestling Team, not a right. It is because of this that you can be dismissed from the team for any reason by the coaching staff. 2. ACADEMICS/GRADES Athletes are expected to maintain good grades at all times. Athletes are to adhere to the district and team policies for eligibility. If necessary there will be weekly grade reports as well as daily attendance reports made to the coaching staff. All athletes are allowed 1 time on the ineligibility list. Any subsequent times (2 nd time) and the Athlete will be OFF OF THE WRESTLING TEAM. The athletes first and foremost priority is to get an education, secondly to play sports. If you cannot do the former, there is NO NEED for the latter. 3. ATTENDANCE Athletes are expected to attend school and classes regularly. Any inconsistencies in attending class (excessive tardiness or ditching) will result in EXPULSION FROM THE TEAM. All Athletes are expected to attend every team meeting, practice, meets and award ceremonies. All Athletes are expected to report promptly to practices (arrive on time) and leave only when practice is over. Practice begins every day at 4:20 p.m. Athletes are expected to report by 4:15, and have the mats rolled out, swept and mopped by 4:20. PRACTICE STARTS AT 4:20 p.m. on Monday through Friday. 4. PARTICIPATION Any Athlete who misses a day of training or a significant portion of training throughout the week will become eligible to lose their Varsity Standing. This loss of Varsity Standing means the athlete may be pulled from the starting spot or be forced to Wrestle-Off in order to maintain their spot. The eligibility and Varsity Standing of the athlete is based solely on the Coaches discretion. This decision is weighted in but not solely limited to the Athletes adherence to the attendance policies of this team.
Bennett High School Wrestling is an Interscholastic Wrestling Program. We as a coaching staff, along with developing our student athletes academic and morally, are tasked with creating and developing winning teams, personal and team championships for the school and town of Bennett. Our goals, Individual and Team alike, are based on this. There is the expectation that students athletes wishing to participate on the Bennett High School Wrestling Team are there working towards those aims. Athletes are expected to show up every day to practice with a positive attitude. The athletes are expected to be prepared to train themselves and their team mates, to achieve individual goals as well as team goals. Each individual on the team should work towards varsity, varsity wins and team wins. Should an individual fail to strive for the goals of the team they can be removed from the team. 5. WRESTLE OFFS We will be using the Ladder System and a series of Wrestle Offs to determine the Varsity Position There will only be THREE wrestle offs held throughout the season. We as coaches are trying to put forth our best team and form consistency within our wrestling team. Weekly wrestle offs distract from this goal. The FIRST wrestle off will consist of an Intersquad Dual. Here all Athletes will begin their season by making weight and wrestling off for their desired weight class. The Intersquad Dual is tentatively scheduled for the Monday evening after Thanksgiving Break. The SECOND wrestle off will be held the Tuesday before the Chistmas Classic Invitational in Greeley. The FINAL wrestle off will not be held until after the Bennett Tournament. It will be tentatively scheduled for the Thursday or Friday of our scheduled Open week. All wrestlers will inform the coaching staff of a Wrestle-Off Challenge 1 (ONE) FULL WEEK before wrestle offs are held. A Challenger can challenge no more than two weight classes and must win TWICE in order to gain the varsity spot. The Varsity athlete need only win once to retain his position. 6. EQUIPMENT
Athletes are responsible for the Equipment issued to them. Should an Athlete lose or damage their equipment he/she will be held responsible at the CURRENT PRICES. Student athletes will be issued the following gear: 1. Team equipment bag - replacement cost $55 2. Team Dual Singlet - sublimated - replacement cost $70 3. Team Tournament Singlet - black - replacement cost $60 4. Team Warmup Top - embroidered- $75 5. Team Warmup Bottom - embroidered- $65 6. Team Headgear* - asics gel - $25 7. Team Championship Singlet*- orange - $65 Prices are based on current prices of the companies the wrestling team uses. Replacement costs of a single item are significantly higher than the purchase of items in team bulk quantities. Athletes will be checked out Numbered and Sized gear. It is not a matter of if they turn in a full set, but that they must turn in the set they were issued. Equipment drop off is not acceptable, each athlete much check out with manager or coach 7. INJURIES Any and all injures are to be reported to Coach Jacoby or Coach Faczak immediately. Should a Varsity Athlete get injured and is forced to give up his position, he will regain the position upon return from said injury. Following an injury an Athlete does not for-go his responsibilities as a team member. Athletes are still expected to come to practice and meets. 8. LETTERING All Athletes must finish the season in GOOD STANDING Have scored 30 team points Coaches Decision
