Millard South Wrestling Club Parent Packet WELCOME TO MILLARD SOUTH WRESTLING CLUB We would like to welcome you and your family to the Millard South Wrestling Club. You will see as the season progresses that Millard South has worked very hard to maintain and precede its reputation for being the Strongest, Most Elite wrestling Club in the State. This packet was made with you in mind; use this as a reference guide through the season. Go through this with your child so that they also feel proud to be a Millard South Wrestler. CLUB HISTORY Millard South Wrestling Club's origin came from the Little Indians wrestling club founded by John DeGeorge in The Little Indians wrestling club changed administration to Joe Erspamer and Robert Piltcher after John DeGeorge left Millard South High. The club had no real association with the high school at this time until coach Doug Denson came to Millard South High school in At this time, the Millard South Wrestling Club was established and in 1996 an administrative board was formed connecting the club to the high school as a feeder club. The Millard South wrestling Club has been developing young wrestlers in the Millard area of Omaha, Nebraska for the past fourteen years. In its eighteen year of existence, the Millard South Wrestling Club has produced 2 eight time Huskerland State Champions, 2 five time Huskerland State Champions, 1 four time Huskerland State Champion and several high school state medalist and champions. In the last 4 years 50% or more of our wrestlers have been in the championship bout during weekly competition regardless if five or twenty wrestlers were competing. Millard South Wrestling Club has won six Huskerland State Championships ( ), eight Huskerland Dual State Championships ( ), four AAU State Runner-ups, two AAU Grand National Championships ( ), seven AAU All-Americans (2008) and six AAU All- American (2009). 3
MILLARD SOUTH WRESTLING PHILOSOPHY It is our philosophy that through a competitive sports program we can provide the incentive for youth to fulfill their own individual needs and goals and at the same time set an example for other youth in the community. Each individual wrestler is asked to come to every practice ready to work hard and learn. In doing this we grow together as a team and work towards becoming stronger more responsible young adults. As a wrestler in the Millard South Wrestling program you are asked to act as a respectful, responsible athlete that upholds the reputation and standards of the program. Just as we ask our kids to act and respond in a certain manner, we expect that the coaches and parents affiliated with the club also work towards a common goal and present themselves in the most appropriate manner as well. The expectation this year, is that the Millard South Wrestling Club coaches, athletes, and parents are not only held to abide by the club s code of conduct but are also held to uphold the guidelines set forth by the NSAA; this guides us towards our Mission as a club. MISSION The Mission of the Millard South Wrestling Club is to provide an atmosphere that fosters the art of wrestling and sportsmanship that will be provided to kids from K-12 at any talent level with intentions of attending Millard South High School. FUNDRAISING Director of Fundraising Shona Seiler This is the first year fundraising is not mandatory. Instead, each family can make a choice to fundraiser or not to help lower the out of pocket cost of wrestling. Parents have the choice to fundraise by selling Puff Pastries or Gold Canyon Candles. Parents wishing to sell both items may do so. Parent can use fundraising to pay for singlets, pay scheduled tournament entry fees or pay for MSWC apparel. Monies raised will be credited towards wrestler s account. Unused credits will remain with the club. The goal of the fundraiser is to make wrestling more affordable for those that want to take advantage of this opportunity. For those that are tired of fundraising, there is no pressure to do so this season. 4
$50 VOLUNTEER DEPOSIT Participation as a volunteer at our annual Winter National Tournament is necessary in order to host a successful tournament. Each family is required to give a $50 Volunteer Deposit Check. We only ask one adult from each family to volunteer for 1 five hour shift. Your deposit check is not cashed and is returned after the WN Tournament. Families that elect not to participate will have their $50 checks cashed. You must have a Volunteer Deposit Check on file in order to advantage of FREE club tournaments offered for the season. Our club is successful and second to none due to the wonderful parent participation and commitment to the club. COACHES AND TEAM MOMS All of our coaches and team moms are on a volunteer basis. They are not paid and work very hard all year round to make sure that MSWC has and maintains a successful winning reputation. We are always interested in having extra volunteer help from parent(s)/guardian(s). This help is essential, especially when we put on our very own on tournament. All MSWC head and assistant coaches are USA Bronze certified, First Aid certified, and CPR Certified. Contact Lori Quandt or James Cloyd, if you are interested in being a Parent Helper or interested in training to become a certified coach. We pride ourselves on the fact that no wrestler will wrestle without a coach. 5
OUR WEB SITE We use our web site often for communicating information and results. There is an announcement board where we post updated information. There is also a calendar for practice dates/times. You can get updated tournament information on the calendar. Also available on the web site is a current listing of the coaches, pictures, along with addresses. For many of us this is a simplified means of communication. SINGLETS Parents have an option to purchase a singlet for their child for $65 or rent one for $60. Those renting a singlet will need to return it in good condition at the end of season banquet in order to get their deposit check back. If your singlet is not turned in on time, your deposit check will be cashed the day after the banquet. MSWC will also purchase unwanted singlets at the end of the season for $25. **WASHING INSTRUCTIONS** Please wash your singlet on cold/gentle cycle or hand wash and hang dry. This helps the color last longer and elasticity if the spandex last longer. ***MSWC SINGLETS ARE TO BE WORN DURING EACH MATCH OF SANCTIONED TOURNAMENTS. NO EXCEPTIONS!!! PARENTS Please be aware that although we enjoy working with your child on a weekly basis we are not childcare providers. We ask that you please be in attendance for your child s practice. If you are unable to be there please let a coach and another parent know so that if something were to happen to your son/daughter we will have appropriate emergency contact information. Also, if you are volunteering please do not leave other siblings unattended. We are a fully insured club, but only for our registered wrestlers and we would hate to see a brother or sister of one of our wrestlers injured. If you need to bring other siblings please bring activities for them to stay occupied. SKIN DISEASES Skin diseases are a very serious part of wrestling and we feel obligated to let you know that this is a possibility. Millard South Wrestling Club is very careful in trying to eliminate these problems. The mats are cleaned on a regular basis and it is up to you as wrestlers and parents/(guardians) of wrestlers to make sure you are clean and if there is a problem, we strongly encourage you to inform your coaches immediately. Any open wounds and sores should be neatly covered or wrapped, if this does not happen the wrestler will not be able to participate. What wrestlers and coaches can do to stop the spread of skin disease(s): 6
Do not use others combs, brushes, hair ornaments, hats, scarves, towels, washcloths, socks or shoes. Never walk barefoot in public places. If you must use a public shower area always wear shower shoes. After bathing or swimming, dry your feet and in between your toes thoroughly. Do not involve yourself in any contact sports without wearing socks or shoes. Expose your feet to the air when you are at home. Change your socks and underwear frequently. Do not wear heavy clothing in warm weather that will cause you to sweat. Check your pets for areas of hair loss. Wrestlers should shower before and after workouts with disinfectant soap, preferably and anti-bacterial soap. Clothing should be washed daily including all towels. Wash hands frequently. Wrestling Following each use of head gear the equipment should be wiped down with alcohol pads. Coaches should direct skin inspections on a daily basis. Wrestlers that have open wounds or any breaks in the skin should be dissuaded from participating until the skin is healed or the wrestler has been allowed to participate by a licensed physician. If a wrestler is cleared to participate, they should have the affected area covered to avoid any cross contamination from happening. If a wrestler believes they may have a skin infection the athlete must notify a coach and athletic trainer(s) as soon as possible. Ventilate the wrestling room with fans to lower the humidity and temperature. Neoprene sleeves and support braces must be wiped with a disinfectant after each use. All team members should keep their finger nails short in order to avoid scratching anyone. You should always shower immediately after practice and after competing. Do not wait until the following morning to shower. Proper hygiene will greatly reduce the spread of skin diseases. If a wrestler sees a skin lesion on his/her body, she/he needs to get it checked immediately. The wrestler should tell the coach about it, as well as seeing a physician at the first opportunity. The athletic trainer should also be made aware of the skin infection. PRACTICE SCHEDULE Novice practices: Tuesday and Thursday evenings 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm Competitive & Travel: Tuesday and Thursday 7:00 pm 8:30 pm 7
Travel Only: Monday 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm TOURNAMENTS As tournaments registration deadlines become available we will get the information to you ASAP. We will let you know if you must register online or complete a paper registration. **Unless instructed otherwise, please make the checks payable to MSWC so that we will have an accurate count of all the wrestlers we have in each tournament.** Registration forms must be turned in to the Team Mom by the deadline, NO EXCEPTIONS. If you miss the deadline, you still may register your child independently to wrestle in that tournament. It is your responsibility to let the Team Mom know you have registered independently. Tournaments do not issue refunds for non-attendance. Therefore, we cannot issue refunds due to illness or other unforeseen events that may occur. Also please keep track of your Childs record during each tournament. It is a long day and things do get mixed up occasionally. If you are or have a Novice or Competitive wrestler, please find a coach or manager and make sure they have you down for the correct wins and losses before you leave for the day. It is also important to know your child's wrestling record when filling out registration forms for other tournaments. OPEN DOOR POLICY We would like to extend an invitation and encourage all involved to approach us at any time after practice or via /phone if you have any concerns or compliments during the season. Two or three sets of eyes are always better than one. Please never hesitate to contact us with questions, comments, or concerns. We truly welcome suggestions and ideas towards improvement. We also enjoy a pat on the back now and then as well. Millard South Wrestling Club Important Dates Visit our website at: All practices are posted on our Calendar of Events at: Please Note: UNEXPECTED PRACTICE CANCELLATIONS" will be posted on the website home page PLEASE CHECK THE WEBSITE ROUTINELY" for practice cancellations For more DETAILED INFORMATION, please click on the link for that day. 9 MSWC PARENT CODE OF CONDUCT Children's sports are supposed to be fun for the children. Unfortunately, many parents, fans, and coaches do not realize that their actions, whether verbal or nonverbal can have a lasting emotional effect on children. Too many children are leaving sports activities because the fun is unfairly taken away by adults. Millard South Wrestling Club has three skill levels of wrestling participation (Novice, Competitive & Travel Teams) to allow your child to participate at a level that is safe, competitive, and fun. At MSWC we reward your child's efforts and not his/her victories. Help us teach your child to enjoy wrestling while learning the fundamentals and art of wrestling. Your child s hard work and self-motivation will follow in time. Parents, fans, and coaches who follow this simple code can help reinforce what wrestling is all about HARD WORK AND FUN FOR EVERYONE! Preamble The essential elements of character-building and ethics in sports are embodied in the concept of sportsmanship and six core principles: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and positive citizenship. The highest potential of sports is achieved when competition reflects these "six pillars of character." As a parent or spectator: 1. I will not force my child to participate in wrestling. 2. I will remember that children participate to have fun and that wrestling is for the youth, not adults. 3. I will inform the coach of any physical disability or ailment that may affect the safety of my child or the safety of others. 4. I will learn the rules of wrestling and the policies/expectations of the Millard South Wrestling Club (MSWC). 5. I (and my guests) will be a positive role model for my child and encourage sportsmanship by showing respect and courtesy, and by demonstrating positive support for all wrestlers, coaches, officials and spectators at every dual, tournament, practice or other sporting event. 6. I (and my guests) will not engage in any kind of unsportsmanlike conduct with any official, coach, wrestler, parent or spectator such as booing and taunting; verbal and physical threats; refusing to shake hands; or using profane language or gestures. 7. I will not encourage any behaviors or practices that would endanger the health and or wellbeing of the athletes. 8. I will teach my child to wrestle by the rules and to resolve conflicts without resorting to hostility or violence. 9. I will demand that my child treat other wrestlers, coaches, officials, parents and spectators with respect regardless of race, creed, color, sex or ability. 10. I (and my guests) will treat other wrestlers, coaches, officials, parents and spectators with respect regardless of race, creed, color, sex or ability. 11. I will teach my child that doing one's best is more important than winning, so that my child will never feel defeated by the outcome of a match, tournament finish, or his/her performance. 9
12. I will praise my child for competing fairly and trying hard, and make my child feel like a winner every time. 13. I will never ridicule or yell at my child or other participant for making a mistake or losing a competition. 14. I will emphasize skill development and practices and how they benefit my child over winning. I will also de-emphasize excessive wrestling and competition in the novice age group. 15. I will promote the emotional and physical well-being of the athletes ahead of any personal desire I may have for my child to win. 16. I will respect the coaches and officials and their authority during wrestling matches and will never question, discuss, or confront coaches at a dual or tournament, and will take time to speak with coaches at an agreed upon time and place. 17. I will respect the coaches, officials of MSWC and Millard High School and their authority during practices and will never disrupt practice or encourage unsafe/unhealthy training for any child, and will take time to speak with coaches before or after practice at an agreed upon time and place. 18. I will respect everyone's right to health practice environment and will not remove my child from practice due to his/her performance and I will let coaches know prior to practice if my child cannot attend or will need to leave practice early. 19. I will demand a sports environment for my child that is free from drugs, tobacco, and alcohol and I will refrain from their use at all sports events. 20. I will refrain from coaching my child or other players during meets and practices, unless I am one of the official coaches or official parent helpers (coach in training) of MSWC. MSWC reserves the right to terminate (without registration refund) your child's privilege to participate in our wrestling program based on the expectations of the code of conduct. MSWC also reserves the right to terminate (without registration refund) your affiliation with the club as a coach, parent helper or board member based on the expectations of the code of conduct. In addition to the expectations of the Parent Code of Conduct, all coaches, volunteers and parents should understand that the club has accepted the guidelines for sportsmanship and discipline of unsportsmanlike conduct as outlined in the Nebraska Schools Activities Association Sportsmanship Manual.
