9 Skill - Reading Comprehension Name Casey s Super Bowl Party Story By: Andrew Frinkle Casey s family was having a Super Bowl Party. The whole family loved to watch football together on weekends. Sometimes they watched college, but they also liked the pros. It was nice to watch the championship game. Casey even got to stay up late that night! Casey s favorite team actually made it to the Super Bowl this year, which rarely happened. Usually it was two other teams, and she had to choose which one to cheer for. This year would be special. They were going to win for sure! And, on the off chance they didn t, there was still a lot of great food and the company of family, relatives, and friends. Casey s mom had made barbeque meatballs in the crock pot. Dad spent most of the morning smoking some ribs for everyone to eat. Uncle Jack had brought a spicy cheese dip and three kinds of chips. Aunt Rev brought some delicious cakes and desserts. Dad s friend from work, Ryan, brought a bunch of mini sandwiches and chicken wings. Wow, all that with soda and juice? Casey was stuffed by game time but kept nibbling. When the game started, everyone cheered. They groaned at the bad plays. They ooohed and ahhhhed at the great plays and near misses. It was so much fun. People were shouting at the TV, so they had it turned up really loud. Halftime was a fun show, with lots of live music and a fireworks display. That was the perfect time to get some of Aunt Rev s desserts. After that and some funny commercials, the game was back on. As the game wound down, Casey s excitement grew. The seconds ticked off the clock. It was closer and closer to her team winning. Then, everyone went nuts. The game was over. Her team had just won the Super Bowl! They were champs! Casey was so happy!. She really hoped they d repeat next year, but she knew it d be another great party either way. 13 HaveFunTeaching.com

11 Skill - Reading Comprehension Name The Catching Tree Story By: Andrew Frinkle Linda looked up at the tree. It was the biggest tree in town. It was so big that it caught things that people lost. If something floated away or blew away, it was usually caught in the tree. Linda had lost her kite. She wanted to climb up and see if it was in the tree. She thought she saw it in one of the high branches. She had to climb it to make sure. The branches were not close to the ground. They were high up. She needed a ladder to start climbing up the tree. She began to climb. In the lowest branches, she found bird nests. Squirrels chattered at her and ran the other way. She went higher. She found an old baseball. Then there was a kite that was not hers. She found someone s kitten, but it ran away from her. She went higher still. A newspaper was caught in one of the branches. Then there was some string. A balloon was trapped in the leaves. There were more birds, too. She went even higher. More birds nests and angry squirrels greeted her. She found a paper airplane. Then there was an old shoe, which hung by dirty laces. Next she found a lady s hat caught in some twigs. She went even higher to the top. At last, she found her kite. She freed it and tied it to her waist. She found other things, too. There was a toy rocket, another newspaper, a tennis racket, and a TV antenna. There was an eagle s nest and other things, too. Before she went down, she shook down all the stuff that belonged to people. She left the animals alone. They belonged in the tree. By the time she reached the ground again, the area around the tree was covered with things she had shaken loose. Many people were surprised, but they were happy to get their things back. She was just happy to have her kite. 15 HaveFunTeaching.com

13 Skill - Reading Comprehension Name Comets Story By: Andrew Frinkle Andy heard from his friends that a comet was coming. He knew that a comet was a space rock. Space rocks seemed exciting. He wanted to watch it that night. All he had to do was go outside and watch. That was easy enough. That night, he put on a jacket and went outside. He looked around. He saw the moon, but he did not see anything else. There were only a couple clouds, so that was not the problem. He could see some stars, but nothing new or special. Where was the comet? He called his friend on the phone. They talked about it. His friend told him where to look, but he still didn t see it. What was going on? Was he not special enough to see it? Were his eyes going bad? What was he doing wrong? Andy went to get his dad. Together, they looked up in the sky where it was supposed to be. Finally, after several minutes of looking, he saw a fuzzy thing, brighter and bigger than a star, but nowhere near what he expected. I thought it d be like an extra moon or something. Andy complained. It s not big enough for that, and it still might be very far away. Dad explained. I still wish I could see it better. Dad nodded and went inside. When he came back out, he had a telescope. Together, they focused in and saw the comet a little better. It wasn t much, but it helped. What else can we see? Andy wondered. Dad smiled and aimed the telescope over at the moon instead. That was cool. Seeing the craters and the details of the moon up closer was nice. Astronomy was interesting. Andy made sure to read more about it at school! 21 HaveFunTeaching.com
