The basics of every personal fall arrest system can be described as the ABC s of fall arrest. ANCHORAGE Anchorage means a secure point of attachment (structure) for the fall arrest system. The type of anchorage varies with the industry, the job being performed, the type of installation and the structure available. The anchorage connector provides a means of attaching the system to the anchorage. BODY SUPPORT Full body harnesses provide a connection point on the worker for the personal fall arrest system. Whether workers are climbing to do maintenance work or erecting the tower itself, safety assurance along with comfort and mobility must be taken into consideration. Workers up on towers for lengthy periods of time can experience fatigue and need to be able to rely on top of the line fall protection. Workers often find themselves climbing and moving from one area of the tower to another which may present some dangerous scenarios. Along with the obvious danger of working at height, towers expose rescuers to hazards they may not normally encounter on the ground. In most cases, these situations can be physically demanding. Workers often climb at great height and have minimal equipment at their disposal. In addition, finding a comfortable position to stand or rest is often difficult particularly when weather conditions are not ideal. Using proper techniques, safety equipment and effectively ascending and descending poles can ensure that the handling, transportation, installation, and removal of utility poles is safe and efficient. Poles are built in many different shapes and sizes. In addition they can be constructed from steel, wood or even concrete. Often these poles have some sort of climbing structure, but these also vary from typical ladder structures to off-set rungs. Ladders are a major source of injury among Utility workers and many are serious enough to require time off the job - or even worse, death. Safety and security are top of mind when climbing fixed ladders, poles, towers, tanks, into and out of manholes. Climbing ladders can be required in almost any application where a worker must climb to get to a specific spot or platform. In most cases there is no anchoring position and once a worker gets from point A to point B they have some type of platform on which they must conduct work. Workers require freedom of movement and unhampered mobility. Lanyards are usually connected to the back D-ring for fall arrest, located between the shoulder blades and ideally should be anchored above the worker to minimise fall distance. The worker should not walk too far from the overhead anchorage or a swing fall may occur. 28 SHOCK ABSORBING LANYARDS What to look for in a Shock Absorbing Lanyard WEBBING Webbing is an important factor in the durability and safety of the lanyard. You want to ensure that the webbing is strong enough to endure rough use and exposure to sunlight and other elements without tearing or fraying. Kevlar webbing is used for specialty applications such as welding that require fire resistance. Webbing may also be coated with polyurethane to provide protection again grease, oil, dirt and grime. SHOCK ABSORBER Lanyards designed for use as part of a personal fall arrest system must contain an energy absorbing unit that will limit the force on the worker to below 6kN with up to a 4m free fall. LENGTH Standard lanyard length is 2m. A lanyard should be long enough to be user-friendly, but kept as short as possible to minimise the free fall distance. Knots should never be tied in lanyards to reduce their length as this can reduce the strength by 50%. IMPACT INDICATOR If the lanyard has been used to arrest a fall or if the energy absorber has been deployed, the lanyard must be retired immediately. Non-locking hooks must not be used for fall protection because of the danger of rollout the accidental disengagement of a connector from whatever it is attached to.
