5 Pioneer Hut - 3,000m Peak Challenge 26 th -31 st December Pioneer Hut located at the head of the Fox Glacier is the ideal base camp to tackle some of New Zealand s large mountains. Based from one of NZ s highest alpine huts the primary objective of this trip will be to summit some of the 3,000m peaks of the Main Divide such as Lendenfeld, Glacier, Haidinger, Haast, Douglas and Tasman and is a perfect trip for those climbers looking to add to their list of big mountain summits. In order to save time and avoid the need for a 2,000m climb from Fox Glacier a chopper will be used in and out of Pioneer Hut costing approximately $300 per person depending on the number of climbers interested. This climbing camp will require confidence on steep slopes, solid rope skills and a good ice axe/cramponing technique. All welcome. If interested please contact Matt at buckmatthews73@gmail.com Ball Pass - 3 rd -4 th January This overnight trip will take in arguably the most famous mountain crossing in the country - Ball Pass. At 2,121m this high mountain pass crosses the magnificent Mt Cook Range with breathtaking views of Aoraki and other giants of the National Park. The plan will be to leave Christchurch early Tuesday morning with a 6 hour walk/climb then high bivy. The following morning will involve 10 hours on our feet with an alpine start and time to enjoy sunrise on the pass before we head down into the valley with a return to Christchurch in the evening on Wednesday night. The trip will involve rock scrambling, traversing snowfields and negotiating some exposed bluff sections. Confidence in handling an ice axe and using crampons is required. All welcome. If interested please contact Matt at buckmatthews73@gmail.com Mts Whitcombe/Evans/Malcolm Peak - a Rakaia Odyssey 7 th -13 th January Greek mythology tells of the Odyssey, Homer s legendary tale of a group of adventurers who faced some of the most unimaginable challenges on their epic journey to mythical lands few had heard of, let alone dared to venture into. Similar to Homer s legendary tale, our odyssey will also venture into remote, unchartered and often mysterious territory as we will journey to the source of the Rakaia with the primary objective being to climb the mountain giants of Whitcombe, Evans and Malcolm Peak, three classic summits of the Canterbury Alps. The journey will also involve discovering some of the realm's most mythical locations as we will camp under the Amazons Breasts, encounter the frozen ice plateau of Heim, cross the saddle of the Full Moon while under the watchful eye of The Red Lion - this promises to be a unique 5
6 and unforgettable trip. The plan will be to 4WD up the Rakaia to Reischek Hut then spend the next 5-6 nights bivying high along the Main Divide. A full range of mountaineering skills will be required for all those looking to enlist in this epic journey - a must for those wanting a high alpine adventure. All welcome. If interested please contact Matt at buckmatthews73@gmail.com Mounts Whitcombe and Evans from Mount Arrowsmith. Mount Sibbald - January 21st & 22 nd The Plan ('recycled from a Jan '16 trip that didn't eventuate) is to climb the NW ridge, with a 4WD up the Godley Valley. A good level fitness will be required for two big days and a high camp around 2000m. You'll need to be ok with rock scrambling and have basic snow skills. Further details to come. Contact Neil Hamilton - neil@thinkingcap.co.nz Garden of Eden & Garden of Allah 21 st 29 th January Straddling the Main Divide the Garden of Eden and Garden of Allah ice plateaus contain the country's second largest ice mass. With a total length of over 20kms these two remote ice plateaus are surrounded by a number of jagged summits which stand like a fortress a mile above the valley floor. Stories are often told of the area, yet due to its isolation and the foreboding nature of its geographical features such as Satan Saddle, Beelzebub Glacier and Devil's Backbone; it is little surprise that few dare to navigate their way through its impressive ramparts to explore this biblical land. Our objective, however, will be to gather a group of brave adventurers to spend 6-7 days exploring this beautiful part of the Southern Alps while climbing some of its notable peaks. The plan will involve travelling by 4WD via Erewhon up the Clyde River where our journey will begin. A full range of mountaineering skills will be required. All welcome. Note: this trip will involve approximately a week in the mountains; however, the weekends of either the 21/22 or the 28/29 of January will be used depending on the favourability of the weather. If interested please contact Matt at buckmatthews73@gmail.com Advanced Ladies Trad Climbing Course 25 th 26 th February FOR CURRENT NZAC MEMBERS ONLY. An ideal course for those Ladies who have either done last year s Ladies trad climbing course, or can lead on trad and have a basic understanding of anchors. This course is also a good refresher or could be useful to those Ladies looking to get into rope work for multi pitch climbing and gain a deeper understanding of rope work and gear involved in trad climbing. Requirements for this course are that you must know how to lead belay(not with a gri gri), lead climb and abseil - NO EXCEPTIONS as these will not be taught on the course and that you are a current NZAC member. 7
8 The cost for this course is $150, based as two day trips to Banks Peninsula in Canterbury and there will be a ratio of 1:3 so is limited to 6 students only so don t miss out as this will be the only course of its kind for 2017.When applying, please give an outline of your climbing experience and your NZAC members details we cannot guarantee a spot for those non members applying and reserving you a place until you have joined due to the small number of places available on this course. Erewhon to Mt Cook - a transalpine expedition 4 th -12 th February This trans-alpine expedition from Erewhon to Mt Cook must rate as one of the most spectacular alpine journeys in the country. From our departure point at Erewhon the mountaineering expedition will have the objective of gravitating towards the alpine zone as we will head towards the Main Divide then SW towards Mt Cook. The journey will call upon the full gambit of mountaineering skills as we will be navigating mountain passes, traversing glaciers, climbing notable peaks whilst enduring some long days in order to get to our destination. This trip is a must for those wanting to challenge themselves in an expedition style outing in the Southern Alps. Transalpine route TBA. All welcome. Note: this trip will involve approximately a week in the mountains; however, the weekends of either the 4/5 or the 11/12 of February will be used depending on the favourability of the weather. 13 Chairpersons Update -Craig Hosking Section monthly meeting We had Reel Rocks 10 last month to a pack house. Big thanks to all those who supported this year s event. All the profits go straight the NZAC Youth Climbing Camp. Please note there is no December meeting this year as the 125 th Anniversary Dinner took its place. Hope you all have an adventurous fun xmas break and look forward to seeing you all at the February Summer Adventures talk next year. Crag update There have been a few hours put in at the East end, Right Side of Lyttleton Rock. Most of the sport routes have now got double anchors at the top. The Left hand side of the Ataturk wall has seen a major overhaul, so there is now a selection of mainly sport climbs around the Grade 20 region. We look forward to supporting Joe Arts in his plan to overhaul the Huntsbury Spur Crag Big thanks to Shane at Aspiring Enterprises for recently helping us out with gear for crag repairs. Recreational Advocacy With the pre-draft submission from the section being sent in now we wait to see what happens, watch this space for the next update sometime next year. Lindsay Main is still actively working on keeping Port Hills and Banks Peninsula crag access open, thanks Lindsay! 13
14 Notices LINZ seeks feedback on changes to maps Land Information New Zealand (LINZ) is seeking feedback on proposed changes to the price of its paper topographic maps as well as the way they are printed. LINZ recognises the need for paper maps, especially for recreation and use in the backcountry. However, as digital maps grow in popularity, fewer paper maps are being sold and the price LINZ charges for them can no longer cover the costs of producing them. LINZ is proposing to raise the wholesale cost of paper maps, and to make greater use of other printing methods. It would also print fewer maps at a time so that they are more up to date. But before any changes are considered, it wants to hear from map users. LINZ produces the Topo50 and 250 series of maps for New Zealand, and its off shore dependencies. It sells paper copies and makes them available for download via its website. To find out more and to have your say visit the LINZ website at: Chris Bonington Mountaineer Revised 2016 Edition, featuring five new chapters Signed copies: pre-order now and save 20% Chris Bonington Mountaineer is a photographic autobiography, documenting over sixty years of climbing the world s most beautiful and challenging mountains. Few climbers can match Bonington s climbing achievements. He is one of the most accomplished and respected climbers in the world. Available from Amazon and through the UK publisher direct: ORC Fund - Erceg Hut Project A team of 5 volunteers, led by NZAC member Hayden Cox, has just completed a repaint and maintenance work project on Erceg Hut. This was achieved with the aid of Outdoor Recreational Consortium funding (applied through NZAC) and DOC Twizel support, via their arrangement with Dulux, for the paint. 14
15 Congratulations on 125 th anniversary from The Canada Alpine Club. November 5, 2016 Dear Mountain Friends, It is with great enthusiasm that we at The Alpine Club of Canada congratulate you on your 125th anniversary, a remarkable feat! Looking back at 1891 yours was not the only seminal moment. Britain was linked by telephone for the first time to continental Europe. Thomas Edison patented the motion picture. And that oft loved food substitute, SPAM, was introduced to the world. A product whose only rival so far as we in Canada can tell is your very own Marmite.. Clearly the founding of the New Zealand Alpine Club is in good company! In all seriousness, we are extremely proud to be counted a part of your mountain community. Your huts, publications and wild places are the envy of the climbing world and we here at the ACC look to the New Zealand Alpine Club for inspiration and vision. So once again, a hearty congratulations on this great milestone in your storied history! Kindest regards. Neil Bosch, President The Alpine Club of Canada Outdoor Appetite Cookbook A beautiful new cookbook designed for anyone who loves healthy, wholesome and delicious food with recipes, stories and photographs that reflect our love of adventure and the outdoors. 100% of the sale price will go to support the work of the Himalayan Trust in Nepal. 17 Cascade Hut window replacement project Another success story from Martin Curtis and Bob White at Cascade Hut. With the help of ORC, NZAC and personal funding a combined window replacement and relining project was started recently. The new windows are now all in place, with the bunkroom lining to be done at the end of summer. The windows were built and brought down by Bob all the way from Gisborne and in keeping with the hut s historic nature were constructed to look the same, but with treated timber to extend their life. We greatly appreciate the work of these two dedicated volunteers, whose efforts have been vital to the survival of Cascade Hut. BMC International Summer Climbing Meet The Count House, Bosigran, Cornwall, 13 to 20 May 2017 The 2017 BMC International Summer Climbing Meet will be located at the Count House in Cornwall, a 200-year-old building perched above Cornwall s finest granite cliff, Bosigran. Your federation is invited to nominate two (one female and one male) experienced trad climbers from your country. Preference will be given to climbers who have not attended a BMC International Meet before. Please note that if the meet is oversubscribed, places will be reduced to one per country. Please complete the online application form by Monday 16 January. The form is here: 17

20 Trip guidelines An important part of the NZAC is volunteer organised trips. Many members will have had their first alpine experiences on club trips. And many will also have organised trips, helping other members enjoy our alpine environment. If you're thinking of joining or organising a trip, here are some guidelines on what to expect. Responsibilities of a Trip Participant You are responsible for your own safety. If you are uncomfortable with any situation it is up to you to let your Trip organiser know straight away. Be prepared to drive or pay transport costs (petrol, wear and tear) as determined by the Trip organiser. Make sure you are as fit and healthy as possible. Make sure you have a clear idea of the trip's goals and what will be required of you to achieve those goals. Obtain a relevant map and know where you are going, what type of terrain is involved, what gear you will need and the knowledge of how to use it. Be honest to your Trip Organiser about how much experience you have and accept that the Trip Organiser might not accept you on the trip if he/she thinks you are not experienced enough. Get in contact with the Trip Organiser as soon as you are confident that you want to go on the trip. If you discover that you cannot go on the trip then let the Trip Organiser know as soon as possible so that another person can take your place. Read, understand and return the signed copy of the NZAC waiver form to the Trip Organiser. Responsibilities of a Trip organiser Trips should be fun for everyone. They are not very hard to organise and can be very rewarding. Choose a mountain, peak, hill, traverse, route, crag, or whatever and get out there and meet some keen club members! You cannot be responsible for the safety of every member of the group, but you should aim to empower every group member with enough knowledge to make their own informed decisions about the proposed trip both before and during the trip. Choose a realistic goal for the time available and give prospective group members an idea of the amount of effort required to achieve the stated goal Set a group size limit based on your experience, the goal, time available and group fitness and experience. Let the group know what skills and equipment are needed when they sign up so that everyone is prepared. Provide the trip Participants with a copy of the NZAC waiver form and have them understand, sign and return it to you in advance of the trip. Organise travel arrangements at the earliest opportunity and let everyone know how much they should expect to pay for transport costs (petrol, wear and tear). Prepare detailed trip intentions and leave them with at least one responsible individual. The intentions should include a latest return time/date which would trigger a search initiated by the responsible individual(s) and involving the relevant authorities (Police, SAR, etc). If someone on the trip voices their concern about the situation it is up to you (with the help of the group) to find a safe solution where possible. This may involve everyone turning around. Give priority to NZAC members Find someone on the trip to write an interesting trip report for the Section Newsletter. Benefits for NZAC members NZAC Membership gives you access to many discounts with the following retailers. You may be asked to present your active NZAC membership. To see full terms and conditions and other benefits of being a member, please visit Cactus 21
